 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  Varnish compositions and products comprising materials coated with such compositions.

   --------------------------------------
The present invention relates to improvements made to compositions intended to be applied as coatings or varnishes, particularly as varnishes of non-fibrous materials and swellable in water, and to products comprising materials coated with such compositions.

   Hitherto, by applying varnishes as coatings to non-fibrous and water-swellable materials, for example on regenerated cellulose, the operation of evaporating the organic solvents which are used in the varnish has the unfortunate result that the support rust loses its moisture and becomes brittle - To avoid this drawback, it has been proposed to moisten the support sheet before and after the application of the coating, to restore the humidity of the support and maintain its flexibility . In addition, the known varnishes do not adhere satisfactorily to the aforementioned materials, the varnish coating having a tendency to separate from the support when the latter swells with water.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The Applicant Company has found that the disadvantages mentioned above can be avoided if compositions comprising a cellulose derivative, an organic solvent for said cellulose derivative, a small amount of water, and an organic solid substance are used as varnish. having the qualities of dissolving in water but of remaining insoluble in the organic solvent of the composition, said organic substance preferably being a substance capable of forming a hydrophilic colloid with water. To this composition can be added, from the description which follows, suitable plasticizers, waxes and other usual constituents of varnishes.

   The cellulose derivative used can be an ether-cellulose salt, such as nitrocellulose or cellulose acetate; a cellulose ether oxide, such as ethyl or benzyl cellulose; oxyalkyl ether, such as ethoxycellulose; a mixture of cellulose ethers-salts, such as cellulose aceto-propionate; or a mixture of two or more of these different products.

   As organic solvent for the cellulose derivative, a known mixture of volatile solvents can be employed. In the preferred embodiment, a mixture of an ether-salt comprising volatile organic liquids, such as ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, amyl acetate, and a suitable diluent is employed. , such as toluene, petroleum ether, benzene, eto., the diluent at least having to be miscible with water. These mixtures of volatile solvents and diluents will hereinafter be referred to as "the organic solvent".

   In order to obtain so-called “moistureproot” varnish compositions, that is to say which are impermeable to water vapor, it is possible to use, as an addition, a waterproofing ingredient such as a wax, preferably a paraffin wax. high melting point, although other suitable waxes can also be used: mineral, animal

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 or vegetable, even synthetic waxes.

   In order to obtain flexible varnish compositions, in addition to the ingredients already mentioned, a suitable plasticizer which will be soluble in the composition can be employed.

   Suitable plasticizers will be, for example, dibutyl phthalate, etoaromatic acids or their salt ethers with monobasic aliphatic alcohols, such as ethyl ether of benzoyl-benzolic acid.

   As optional ingredients which can be incorporated into the composition of the invention, there may be mentioned gums, resins, oils, in particular oxidized oils (blown oils), chlorinated rubber, chlorinated diphenyl, pigments or other ingredients. of the type used in varnish compositions, in proportions suitable for giving the desired qualities.

   To a varnish comprising a cellulosic derivative, a liquid and volatile organic solvent of said cellulosic derivative, and other ingredients as above mentioned, a small amount of water and an organic solid which is insoluble are added. in the organic solvent.

   As examples of organic solids suitable for use in the present invention there may be crystalline organic compounds, such as the metal salts of organic acids, for example sodium tartrate, and crystalline hydrocarbons, such as sugar. The organic substance is preferably such as to give a hydrophilic colloid, namely starch, dextrin, agar agar, gelatin, casein, and water soluble gums, such as arabic gum, tragacanth. In any event, the organic substance must be either soluble in water or capable of forming with water a hydrophilic colloid.

   Among the hydrophilic colloidal substances which give the best

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 adhesion of the coating composition to the backing sheet are starch and gelatin.

   In general, the proportions of the various ingredients of the composition of the invention can vary quite widely between the following approximate limits, the percentages being understood by weight:

To 1000 parts of one of the mixtures dissolved in the organic solvent is gradually added between 3 and 7 parts of any of the aqueous solutions according to the above formulas, with vigorous stirring until the substance in solution aqueous dispersed in the mixture dissolved in the organic solvent.

   To obtain perfectly transparent coatings, it is preferable that the composition prepared according to the above description is filtered in any way in order to remove such particles in suspension which will be too large to allow the objects of the invention to be achieved. The product thus obtained can be applied as a varnish on a suitable support. The varnish is dried by evaporating the solvents at an elevated temperature, for example in a dryer heated to a temperature of about 60 ° to 80 ° C.

   The compositions of the invention can be used in several industrial arts, in the coatings of paper, leather, metals, etc., but they are particularly advantageous when they are applied as a coating on sheets of non-fibrous and swellable material. in water, such as regenerated cellulose, alkaline solvent soluble cellulose ethers-oxides, cellulose oxyalkyl ethers, gelatin, casein, and the like.

   The coatings obtained according to the present invention have the advantage that the water which is in the coating evaporates simultaneously with the evaporation of the organic solvent while the water, if there is any, in the sheet of the coating. support does not evaporate, which makes it possible to dispense with the operation of re-humidifying the support to restore its original flexibility.

   In addition, since the constituent comprising an organic solid substance is immiscible with the cellulose derivative, this constituent forms in the coating, at the time of se-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 chage, a scattering of minute particles. However, these particles of the organic solid substance give the plaster two new and valuable characteristics, namely: 1 the surface of the plaster is not sticky, and 2 the presence of said substance significantly increases the adhesion of the coating to the support. Coatings obtained according to the invention have the characteristics of showing no tendency to be sticky at ordinary temperature and up to approximately 40 ° C. and of being easily hot-welded at a temperature of approximately 90 C.

   Furthermore, if the compositions of the invention are prepared by omitting either water or the organic solid substance, the products which will be obtained will be too sticky at temperatures below 40 ° C. to be able to be used without inconvenience. to coatings on packaging materials. The possibility of obtaining, according to the present invention, varnishes free from this defect allows greater freedom of choice with regard to the other ingredients of the composition, in particular it allows a large variation in the proportions of plasticizers, gums. and oxidized oils.
