<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La bande de fermeture, constituée par exemple par du métal en feuille ou une bande en un dérivé de cellulose, se déroule de façon continue d'une bobine, et l'une de ses faces passe sur un dispositif d'encollage, de sorte que sa face intérieure est re- couverte de colle . Après l'application de la colle s'effectue, chaque fois que la bande de fermeture a été avancée d'une lan- gueur de fermeture, l'application de la bande plus étroite ou ae colle des fils d'arrachement distants les uns des autres sur la couche/ de la bande de fermeture;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
à celle de la bande de fermeture préalablement encollée, oe qui est réalisé par exemple à l'aide d'une pince d'avance saisissant simultanément la bande de fermeture et les fils ou bandes d'arrachement. Apres cela la bande de fermeture avec sa bande ou ses fils d'arrachement fixés à sa face encollée, est recouverte sur l'extrémité chevauchante d'une bande de papier venant d'une bobine spéciale, entaillée des deux côtés de la bande ou des fils d'arrachement, puis sectionnée et ensuite, ainsi préparée, amenée dans le chemin de l'emballage dont le joint doit être entouré ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
pendub .
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
ressort 67.
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

"Tear-off, waterproof, for packaging of boxes, such as boxes of cigarettes, with method and device for its mechanical production".
This invention relates to a tear-off closure, impermeable to air and moisture, for packaging of boxes, in particular boxes of cigarettes, of the kind in which the opening seal of the package, for example the seal between the body of the box and its lid, is formed by a strip impermeable to air and humidity, made for example of a derivative of cellulose or of metal foil, glued on its inner face and which bears on this glued face is either a narrower strip, for example of sheet metal, or else several strips or threads (for example of hemp) spaced apart from one another serving as a tear strip or pulling threads,
so that to open the box it is not the tape

entire closure surrounding the joint which is torn off, but only its middle part covered by the threads or the tear strip.
In accordance with the invention, the end of the closure strip which covers the beginning of this strip after the boot has been surrounded, is itself covered with a strip, for example of paper, so that this the overlapping part of the closure strip is not glued in place. At the same place are provided, on the other hand, two notches spaced apart from each other roughly like the threads or tear tape, so that along these two notches the overlapping end of the The closure strip is lifted and when you continue to pull, the tearing will occur along the tear tape or threads all around the opening seal.
In order to make recognizable the place of the free end of the strip to be grasped with the fingers for tearing, a clearly visible external mark is fixed on this strip, for example in another color.
The process for the mechanical and continuous manufacture of these air and moisture impermeable tear-off closures for packaging, in particular for packaging of boots according to the invention, is carried out as follows.
The closure strip, consisting for example of sheet metal or a strip of a cellulose derivative, unwinds continuously from a coil, and one of its faces passes over a sizing device, so that its inner face is covered with glue. After the application of the glue takes place, each time the closure strip has been advanced by a closure length, the application of the narrower strip or the glue of the tear-off threads spaced from each other. others on the diaper / closure tape;

to that of the previously glued closure strip, which is produced for example by means of a feed clamp simultaneously gripping the closure strip and the son or tear strips. After that, the closure strip with its strip or tear-off threads attached to its glued face, is covered on the overlapping end with a strip of paper coming from a special reel, notched on both sides of the strip or strips. torn threads, then cut and then, thus prepared, brought into the path of the packaging with which the seal is to be surrounded;
then, during the subsequent transport of the packaging with the closure strip, the continuous surrounding of the closure strip around the boot or packaging takes place. After that, a special device puts a dot of glue on the outer surface of the overlapping end of the closure strip placed around the box, and then a special conformation punch placed behind the glue point device applies to the strip a mark, for example in colored paper, making particularly recognizable the place of the overlapping end to be grasped to produce the tearing.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 to 6 show, by way of example, an embodiment of the closure strip with the box which receives it, while Figures 7 to 17 show the device for the mechanical manufacture of this tear-off closure, airtight and moisture-proof.
As shown in Figure 1, the tear-off closure tape consists of an air and moisture impermeable tape, for example a visoose tape. To tear off this strip 1 which surrounds the joint of the box and which is previously provided with a layer of glue on the inside face, a narrower tear strip is used, applied to the layer of glue or well, according to the example of Figure 1, several son 2 pressed in the adhesive layer of this strip.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In order to allow a completely airtight application of the closure strip around the box, an adhesive diluted with a volatile diluting agent will preferably be used.
The overlapping end lb of the closure strip 1 (figure 3) is covered on the glued side with an unglued paper strip 3, so that the overlapping end cannot stick to the beginning of the strip. band 1. In addition, at the end of this overlapping end 1b, the strip or neighboring exterior tear-off threads / notches 4 are made. In order to make the notched part of the end 1b of the closure strip which must be grasped in order to cause the tear particularly recognizable, a mark 5 in the form of a clearly visible seal is attached to this cut end (see figures 1 and 5). ..
As shown in figure 6, the tear takes place along the inner tear strip or the tear threads 2 of the closure strip, as soon as the notched part of the overlap lb is grasped with the / fingers and torn off as shown in figure 6.
The method and the device for the continuous and mechanical sealing in air and humidity of box packaging, particularly cigarette boxes, using this closure strip, are shown in elevation on the bottom. figure 7 and, in plan, in figure 10.
Figures 8 and 9 as well as Figures 11 to 17 show details of the machine.
According to figure 7, a spool 6 is provided for the closure strip 1. This strip 1 which unwinds from the reel 6 passes over a glue roller 7 to receive the glue on one side. The gluing device applies the glue, for example gum arabic, to the upper face of the strip 1 and protected from air. For this purpose, it consists of an adhesive reservoir 8 provided with a special chute 9 in front of which the adhesive roller 7 moves with a practically sealed seal (FIGS. 7 and 8).
so that the glue does not spread to the outer edges.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
laughing tape 1, which would have drawbacks because, when sticking the tape to the box, the glue would overflow from the side and stain the boot, the edges of the tape 1 are covered by protective sheets 10 (figures 7 and 8).
In this way, it remains, on both edges. of the strip, a narrow unglued line.
On the glue roller 7 rests an adhesive distributor roller 11 which, for the adjustment of the thickness of the glue layer, can be adjusted in position by eccentric bearings 13. By turning these bearings, the free space between the rollers 11 and 7 is varied within the desired limits. So that the distribution roller 11 is continuously in contact by other parts of its surface with the closure strip which passes around the roller. To the glueer 7, it is given a slow rotational movement, for example by means of a wheel ratchet 14 (fig.
8 and 9) wedged on its axis 12 and which is controlled by a pawl 16 mounted on an oscillating lever 15. At each revolution of the glue roller 7, the oscillating lever 15 performs an oscillation under the action of a lifting finger 17. The roller 7 itself is controlled by the closure strip 1 and the means which cause it to advance intermittently.
The glue reservoir 8 is arranged to oscillate around the axis 18 of the roller 7, as indicated in dotted lines in FIG. 7.
Likewise, the roller 7 is carried by two arms which oscillate around an axis 19, which enables it to be brought into the position also indicated in dotted lines in FIG. 7. These devices facilitate cleaning of the gluing apparatus.
The closure strip 1, after passing through the gluing apparatus, enters a drying device 20 in the form of a vertical channel. In this drying channel are arranged lower traction rollers 21 (Figures 7 and 10) controlled by the main shaft of the machine. From the trac-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
lower tion 21, the closure strip passes over an upper guide roller 22. It passes through this channel in several loops so that the drying is quick and efficient. In addition, to aid drying and rapidly evaporate the diluting agent incorporated in the adhesive, it is possible to provide inside the drying channel 20 heating devices shown at 23.
It should be noted that the closure strip 1 always passes over these guide rollers, so that the coated side faces outwards. On leaving the drying channel 20, the closure strip 1 passes over a tensioning or balancing roller 24 fixed on ur osoillant lever, and from there on a roller 25 to continue its path in a horizontal plane.
At this location, the tear-off threads 2 are applied to the glued face of the closure strip. These son come from spools 26 carried by journals provided on the frame of the machine, they are held by a comb 27 at the desired spacing from each other, along the width. tearing and they are pressed onto the adhesive layer of the strip 1 by a roller weighing 28 mounted on a lever.
The step by step advance of the closure strip 1 with its tear-off threads applied to the glued face, is effected by a pinco 31 opening and closing periodically and moving in a back-and-forth movement. comes from a length of advance of the strip, clamp shown schematically in figure 10 and, in detail, in figure 17.
This clamp 31 cooperates with a pawl 30 and a guide 29 of the closure strip 1, so that, when the front part of the closure strip (used to surround the seal of a box) is cut, the pawl 30 which elastically grips the closing strip against the guide 29 (figure 10) prevents the sliding back of the closing strip 1 under the traction of the balancing roller 24 mounted at
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
pendub. The closure strip 1 must, as has already been said, advance step by step (and cut off) in order to be able to surround a box with the segmented part, while the transport rollers 21 which bring the closure strip 1 coil 6 and pass it through the glue and dryer device, rotate continuously.
With each revolution of the transmission, the balancing roller 24 mounted in a pendulum, performs an oscillation, and thus maintains an approximately uniform tension in the closure strip from the gluing apparatus to the guide 29. the feed clamp 31 comprises, as usual, a fixed jaw 32 (figure 17) and a movable jaw 33. This can oscillate on the support of the fixed jaw and it is provided with an arm carrying a roller 34. This roller 34 is in contact with an oscillating rail 35 and can be moved by it in the direction of the arrow 36, which causes the opening of the clamp 31 ... The clamp itself moves in a guide 37 wherein it is moved back and forth by a lever or pull rod 38. Its stroke corresponds to a length of a sectioning to be taken on the closure strip 1.
When the clamp 31 (FIG. 10) is moved in the direction of arrow 39, it grasps at one end of its stroke the free end 40 of the strip 1. The clamp then closes and retreats to advance the strip a new length.
A little before the end of this race, a special paper strip 3 (see figures 10, 11,12) serving to xxxxxxxxx cover the layer of glue from the overlapping end of the band, is brought parallel to this strip 1 (figure 11). The arrangement is effected by means of a control roller 41 over which passes an endless belt 43 also passing over another roller 42 placed at a certain distance. The roller 41 can be set in motion for example (FIG. 12) by a ratchet wheel 44 and an oliquet mounted on the lever 45. The strip of paper 3 coming from the reel 46 (figure 7) enters a guide 47 which can
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
turn on an axis 48. This guide takes the position shown in solid lines in Figure 11.
At the moment when the clamp 31 is about to bring a new length of the closure strip, this clamp is at the other end of its stroke. The guide 47 (Figure 11) then moves to the position shown in dotted lines, continuing the advance of the paper web 3. It is then that a pair of scissors 49 (see Figures 10 and 11) is closed, for example controlled by a cam 50 (Figure 7).
Therefore, the length of the closure strip which is to surround the box is separated from the strip at the same time as the paper strip 3 is applied to the glued side of the overlapping end. One of the branches of the scissors 49 (Figures 10 and 11) carries a pad 51 which, at the time of severing, strongly presses the paper strip 3 against the glued surface of the overlapping end of the closure strip 1. At the same time time, a pusher 56 (Figures 10 and 11) advances in the direction of arrow 58, a knife with two blades 57 against this end of the strip. Before this two-bladed knife touches the strip, a roller 59 subjected to the tension of a spring, rests against the strip, and in particular on the strip of paper 3.
This knife 57 thus cuts in the end of the closing strip 1, which has been cut, notches and precisely at the moment when the cut part of the strip 1 located on the path of the box 52 to be surrounded is driven by the box 52 placed in front of it (see figure 10) which is moved in the direction of arrow 53. Thus are produced the two notches 4 visible in Figure 5, which are placed very close to the two edges of the special paper strip 3. These notches are intended to free the beginning of the tear strip, that is to say - say the part with the strips or tear-off threads, while at the same time a small piece of paper 3 prevents the overlapping end of the strip from sticking together, which allows
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
to seize it easily.
This tongue thus formed in the overlapping end by the two notches constitutes a real pull tab. If we want to open the packaging or the box, we pull on this tab as explained with reference to Figure 4, and we tear, by the tear son 2, the closure strip along the seal. After the length of closure tape piece suitable for closing a package has been separated from the tape, it is driven by the package 52 which moves in its path in the direction of arrow 53.
As a result, the middle part of the cut strip rests with its glued face against the side of the box which faces it, and along the joint. The box 52 with the closure strip glued to its rear face, now moves through a channel lined with brushes, in which the parts of the closure strip which protruded laterally are applied to the corresponding face of the box 52, for example the front faces, so that after passing through the brush channel, the box is surrounded on three sides by the closure strip.
The protruding end of the closure strip is shorter on one side of the box than on the other. The shorter part is denoted by 1a in Figure 10 and the longer part by 1b.
: The box 52 thus surrounded on three sides by the closure strip, now penetrates (FIG. 10) into a channel 54 transverse to the brush channel, and located at the end thereof.
In this transverse channel, the end of the closure strip is first folded over the rear face of the box. For this operation are used the organs shown in Figures 10, 13 and 14. On a pusher 55 is an arm 62 rotating about an axis 61, provided with a roller 63 at one end and a brush 64 at the other. The roller 63 moves along a fixed cam groove 66 against which it is pressed by a
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
spring 67. A lever 65 which carries a roller 68 is mounted to oscillate on the part of the rotary arm 62 which carries the brush 64. 11 is provided with a heel 69 which bears against a stop 70 under the action of a spring . When the pusher 55 is moved in the direction of the arrow 71 (Figures 10 and 14) the guide piece 72 grips the end 1a of the strip 1 (Figure 10).
At the same time, the roller 68 escapes because its heel 69 has separated from the stopper 70 and it grips the closure strip (Figures 13 and 14). Slitting the subsequent movement of the pusher, the roller 68 then maintains with certainty the projecting end 1a of the closure strip in the guide 72. The position of the closure strip relative to the seal of the box can therefore no longer change. The pusher 55 now continues its downward stroke, so that the brush 64 applies the short part 1a of the closure strip against the boot. When this takes place, and as the pusher continues its downward stroke even further, the brush 64 moves away, as the roller 63 rolls on a rising portion of the cam 66.
At the end of the downward stroke of the pusher 56, the roller 68 rests against the longer end lb of the closure strip 1, which has the effect of pressing, by means of this roller, the end lb of the closure strip in guide 73. After this, another pusher 74 (figure 10 top right) advances and pushes the boot 52 in the transverse path 54 in the direction of arrow 75. As a result, the end opposite the closure strip also applies to the corresponding side face of the box, from which it follows that the closure strip now completely surrounds the boot. making the subsequent path of the box in the transverse path 54, the fixing of the special external mark is carried out which must make the location of the tongue of the closure strip recognizable.
For this purpose, a point of glue must first be applied to this part to be gripped. That is
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
carried out by means of a gluing device 76 (figure 10) shown in detail in figure 16. The device comprises a glue reservoir 76 in the lower part of which a piston 78 is held in a withdrawn position by a spring 79. A flexible pipe 80 provides the seal. Opposite the piston is a check valve 82 housed in a channel 81 of the glue reservoir 76.
When the piston is pushed in the direction of the arrow (Figure 16) by an actuator 83 capable of reciprocating, this piston ejects through the check valve 82 a small quantity of glue which spurts out under the piston. forms a dot of glue through the opening 84 of a nozzle surrounding the valve 82. Before the control member 83 actuates the piston 78, the entire gluing device is folded in the direction of the arrow 86 by a lever 85, on the closure strip 1 which surrounds the box. It is only when the orifice 84 is lightly pressed against the closure strip 1 that the piston 78 is set in motion to produce the mentioned point of glue.
After the point of glue has been applied to the tongue of the closure strip, the mark is applied to this tongue, using the special device shown schematically in FIG. 10 behind the glue adhesive 76, and in detail in FIG. 15. The device consists of a punch 87 held in the withdrawn position by a spring 88. A die plate 89 is placed in front of the guide of the punch. This punch, which is hollow, contains a piston 90 resting against a spring. The strip 92 in which the marks are to be cut unwinds from a reel 91 (FIG. 10). The advance of this strip 92 is produced by a roller 93 (FIG. 15) which advances step by step under the action of a ratchet and pawl device 94,95. A pressure roller 96 presses the web 92 brotherhood advance roller 93.
The ratchet-holder lever 95 is connected by a connecting rod to an elbow lever 97 which carries a roller 98 placed on the path of the pusher 87.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
As soon as the box or other packaging has arrived in the zone of action of the punching device (FIG. 15), the pressure roller 98 acts to advance the punch 87. A paper disc is then cut from the strip 92, and pressed against it. the point of glue at the end of the strip 1. The application of the washer or mark is made by means of the piston 90 subjected to the pressure of a spring, but which may yield a little as soon as the mark has been pressed with sufficient pressure against the tongue (FIG. 15).
To improve the adhesion of the mark, it is possible to provide behind the device for punching and applying the mark (members 87 to 90) a special heating means comprising (see FIG. 10) an electrically heated pressing member 99.
When the boxes have arrived in this position, they leave the transverse path 54 under the action of a pusher 100 which pushes them, in the direction of the arrow, into an evacuation gutter.
