  BREVET DETENTION Bougie d'allumage

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  PATENT DETENTION Spark plug
Spark plugs in internal combustion engines, especially petrol engines, are distinguished as "cold" and "hot" spark plugs.

The former are used with high compression engines which develop a great deal of heat when running, and the latter with low compression engines with little heat release.

In addition, cold plugs are used in the case of engines kept running for a long time without stopping and at high speed, while hot plugs are preferred for engines with frequent stops and low speed.

As a result, in practice, it is necessary to have a large stock of candles of all kinds.

The present invention relates to a spark plug which can easily be made a cold candle a hot candle or a candle of any intermediate type.
The degree of heat of the candle is conditioned by the path of the heat from the lowest point of the.

insulating body at the seal and at the engine block.

To allow adjustment of the length of this course, the candle casing is. according to the invention, provided internally with a conical seat intended to receive the insulating body which holds the ignition electrode, this insulating body itself terminating in a cone, but of slightly smaller cross section, so to leave an equally conical space where one can insert an annular seal intended to prevent the passage of combustion air, this ring by its more or less elevated position forming a hot or cold spark plug
A spark plug formed according to the invention is shown by way of non-limiting example in the accompanying drawings.

We see at the. figure I the vertical section of a hot candle
Figure 2 shows a cold candle of the same construction.

Figure 3 shows a different type of candle.

Such a spark plug consists of: a casing I, terminated at the bottom in a known manner with a thread 2, for its attachment to the engine block.

The insulating body 3. housed in the casing I, carries at its end, a tightening screw 4 for the connection of the electrode 5 with the battery or the magneto
The insulating body 3 is held in the casing I by a nut 6 with an external thread, being screwed onto the corresponding internal thread of the casing.

Between the nut 6, terminated at the bottom by a cone, and an equally conical surface of the insulating body is inserted a circular seal 7, which adorns an intermediate chamber 8. The bottom of the envelope I present, with fluorine 1

and 2, a fairly long, interior conical seat 9 forming an angle of about thirty degrees with the axis of the candle.

Thanks to the also conical shape of the part of the insulating body 10 which corresponds to the seat 9, but has a slightly smaller diameter, a conical space II is formed.

On the conical surface 10 of the insulating body is slid a packing ring I2, preferably of copper, of the same thickness as the gap II, which hermetically separates the two intervals 8 and II.

We see in Figure I that the seal 12 being at the top of the conical seat, almost the entire conical section of the insulating body is bathed by the products of combustion, resulting in a hot candle.

In Figure 2 a smaller ring 12 is used which can only embrace the base of the conical surface, the result is a cold candle.

It is evident that a spark plug of any desired intermediate heat level can also be obtained by employing a medium size gasket.
In addition, the invention makes it possible to intensify or reduce the heat transmission by choosing more or less thick annular gaskets allowing a more or less important passage of the heat, since a very thick gasket applying over the entire surface. conical will cause significant heat transmission.

In figures 1 and 2 the seat 9 and the corresponding surface 10 are parallel, but they can also be convergent, provided that the thicknesses of the annular seals are of proportionate thickness.

In the case of Figure 3, the base of the envelope.

1 internally comprises steps I3, I4, I5 with conical seats, between which and the corresponding surfaces I6, I7 and 18 of the small insulating body are housed in the chosen location, the annular seal 19.

It goes without saying that the shapes. details of embodiment, means of clamping and assembly, the methods of construction and fixing of the electrodes may vary without departing from the scope of the present invention.
