   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 saillantes.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

  PATENT OF INVENTION A method and apparatus for applying an adhesive material to fabrics and the like.

   The present invention relates to the application of an adhesive material in paste or liquid form to fabrics and the like for the purpose of making seams and is primarily concerned with the application of a rubber solution to the fabric. an adhesive material similar to waterproofed fabrics in the manufacture of clothing, or to polished sheets or the like, which operation has usually been done by means of the operator's fingers and is known as coating.

   While primarily intended for use with a rubber solution and like adhesive materials which are usually viscous or pasty in consistency, the invention is also intended for use with rubber latex or an aqueous adhesive material. slow-drying analogous or a slowly-drying rubber solution, which is of the consistency

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 more or less fluid but which can be thickened.

   The main object of the present invention is to ensure that the coating operation is carried out by means of a. tool or machine, which results in faster coating, eliminates the need for the operator to get his fingers dirty, and provides a more uniform film of adhesive material and more economical use of the material adhesive.

   Other objects of the invention are to provide these tools or machines with means by means of which the coating operation can be combined with the folding or the formation of hems on coated parts, the hot drying of the assembly, the pressing by rolls of the coated parts with or without heating means and the application of a tape to the coated parts, for example to cover a seam or for a similar purpose.

   Proposals have already been made for the mechanical, (i.e. non-manual) application of adhesive materials to waterproof fabrics, shoe parts, etc., but in all of these proposals the adhesive material used was a latex of rubber or other slowly drying substance which in some cases flowed easily and which in all cases required a period of time to dry before the coated parts could be folded or otherwise assembled.

   In none of the known proposals is there any suggestion of an apparatus suitable for coating with a solution of rubber or a similar viscous quickly drying adhesive material, nor is there any suggestion of the coating. and joining, or coating and folding, or coating and taping to fabrics, in one operation.

   According to the main feature of this

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 The invention provides a coating tool comprising a container for a quantity of solution of rubber or similar adhesive material, a means for allowing a guided relative movement to be produced between the container and the fabric to be coated and a means for placing the material. adhesive continuously in contact, with pressing, with the object during this movement.

   The means of bringing the adhesive material into contact with the tissue may be a normally closed orifice in the container or in an extension thereof, an orifice against which the tissue can be guided, means being provided for opening the orifice when one the desire. According to a variant, the means may comprise a roller, a part of which penetrates into the container and is intended to collect the adhesive material, and of which another part comes into contact with the fabric to be coated and deposits the picked material thereon. This roller may be positively actuated or may be rotated by frictional contact of the moving fabric and may include a means for varying the length of the surface to be exposed to the adhesive material and thereby varying the width of the deposited film. on the fabric.

   In either case, additional means can be provided to vary the thickness of the film of the adhesive material deposited, this means taking the form, in the first case, of a spacing means for adjusting the distance of the moving fabric from the orifice, and taking the form, in the latter case, of adjustable scraper blades against the roll, or of varying surfaces of the roll or, analogously, of means of 'spacing. Further, for coating already folded seams or hems or other protruding parts, the spacer, or the roller or the walls of the orifice may be grooved to accommodate these parts.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 protruding.

   The tool may be a small portable hand tool or may be intended to be attached to a workbench or table, or, as explained below, may be part of a machine. When built as a hand tool, small rolling wheels can be added to facilitate this movement over the fabric.

  According to another characteristic of the present invention, the tool is incorporated in a machine so as to be able to approach and move away from the top of a table or a similar part of the machine by a manual control or by foot pedal, which control can, when the tool is lifted from the work, first close the opening of the container, when this form of delivery of adhesive material is employed, and reopen it when it returns to the workpiece . In these forms of the invention, a means of allowing relative movement between the tool and the fabric may include a freely moving roller or conveyor belt protruding above the top of the table below the means of providing. the adhesive material; the means for producing this relative movement may include a positive drive for the roller or the conveyor belt.

   According to still other characteristics of the invention, and especially when it is incorporated in a machine, there has been attached to the tool or otherwise combined therewith, before or beyond it, means of folding and hemming, of sheet metal or other like material for guiding the fabric into determined positions and so that the fabric can be immediately hemmed, folded or otherwise assembled in the same machine or tool, with or without the application of heat to dry the adhesive material.

   In all cases where the adhesive material employed is rubber latex or other slowly drying substance, heat will be employed.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 between the coating and assembly or folding phases of the operation and can also be used after assembly has been completed. When, on the contrary, the adhesive material employed is a solution of rubber or the like viscous rapidly drying material, the application of heat can be suppressed.

   In addition to or instead of the folding or hemming means (the alternatives being chosen according to the particular work to be performed), a means can be provided for attaching a tape to the coated parts, this means comprising means of guide and tension for the tape and a pressure roller or more rollers with or without heating means to press the tape onto the coated surface as the fabric advances. Here also this roller can be grooved to receive a seam or another protruding part.

   In the accompanying drawings, various embodiments are shown by way of example.

   Fig. 9 is a front elevational view, in part schematic, of a tape application arrangement.

   Fig. 10 is a vertical sectional view of another form of coating tool, also partially schematic.

   If we refer to figs. 1, 2 and 3, the coating machine comprises a table having a flat top 1, legs 2 and crossbars 3. On the top of the table 1 stands an L-shaped arm 4, having a vertical boss 5 at the front end, in which slides a rod 6. At the base of the machine there is a pedal 7 pivoting at 8 which is connected by means of the member 9 to the rear end of a lever 10 pivoting on the arm 4 at point 11. at its front end, lever 10 is articulated to rod 6 so that when pedal 7 is lowered, rod 6 is raised. A spring or a weight not shown is provided to return the pedal to the upper position.

   In the table top 1, below the front end of the arm 4 is a plate 12, shown in fig. 5, which has a rectangular opening 13 through which advances an endless conveyor belt 14 (see fig. 2) mounted on two upper rollers 15 and a lower roller 16 and held under tension by cleaning rollers 17 mounted in levers. 18 influenced by springs.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   Below the table top 1 is an electric motor 19 with control switch 20 at the front of the machine, which actuates the conveyor 14 by means of the friction clutch 21 operated by the pedal 22, and by means of the large pulley 23 on the roller shaft 16.

  The transporter is actuated when pedal 22 is depressed to engage the Clutch and moves from right to left under boss 5 of arm 4.

   At the lower end of the rod 6 is fixed an H-shaped member 24, to the lower face of which is attached by knurled screws 25 a sheet metal container 26, the lower end of which is of smaller section and which is open. but is provided with a sliding closure plate 27 actuated by means of the bar 28. Normally the bottom of the container rests with great pressure on the conveyor.

   At the right-hand end of the plate 12 but above the opening 13 is a guide 29 while at the left end is a collector 30 followed by rotating pressure rollers SI whose roller of right can be moved forwards against spring pressure by means of a pivoting lever 3Ia to allow the introduction of the treated work. By means of screws 24a at the corners of the H-piece, the bottom of the container can be leveled so that it lies exactly on the conveyor.

   In service, the motor is started, the pedal 7 is lowered to lift the container away from the conveyor and the end of the work to be coated is placed in the guide 29 and under the container, after which the container is released, the plate 27 is moved rearward to open it and the pedal 22 is lowered to actuate the conveyor and advance the work

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 on which a film of adhesive material from the container is deposited, the edges of the orifice acting as deployment members.

   As the tissue is moved forward by the conveyor, it is folded back and pressed into members 30 and: SI. These members may however be removed or replaced by others giving different numbers or different dimensions of pleats or hems, depending on the nature of the work in question.

   The container 26 is shown in more detail in Figs. 4 and 5 and has a sliding cover 32 for the filling opening.

   Adjustable or interchangeable spacers can be attached to the side of the container at the base to keep it a short distance from the work and thereby increase the thickness of the adhesive film.

   There is shown in f ig. 5a an alternative in which a deployment roller 33 is provided in the outlet of the container in place of a sliding plate, the surface of the roller being smooth or engraved, grooved or hollowed or covered with a fabric so that the roller picks up the adhesive material and deposits it on the work. A squeegee blade removes excess adhesive material.

   There is shown in f ig. 6 two other variants, one of which consists of a roller 34 mounted freely in place of the conveyor 14, the positive control being in this case included or deleted as desired, since the treated part can be easily engaged by hand in this case.

  The second modification is a hot air heater 35 for use when a slowly drying adhesive material is employed. Other heating means can be adopted either above or below the fabric.

   To vary / vary the width of the material film

 adhesive deposited, an adjustable shield can be adopted, one form of which is shown in Figs. 7 and 8. As can be seen, the deployment roller 33 is provided with an arcuate sliding cover 36, movable from the outside of the container. A similar arrangement can be adopted for the container shown in Figs. 4 and 5 and, furthermore, in this form of container, any other suitable means may be adopted for opening and closing the orifice, for example a rack and pinion, or a lever mechanism connected to the sliding plate. 27.

   Qn represented in f ig. 9 is a form of mechanism for securing a tape, comprising pressure rollers 37 which can be lifted from the work against spring pressure by a pedal not shown. Appropriate guides 37a for the tape are shown.

   A coating arrangement for use with latex or similar adhesive material is shown in FIG. 10 in which the deployment roller 38 is below the workpiece and in which the pressure is maintained by another roller 39 or by a fixed pressure member, either of these being heated if required. or else a separate heater being provided.

   In the practice of the invention for the manufacture of garment belts, the folding device may be arranged so as to fold back a coated strip of fabric twice, first along one edge and immediately then along the other edge. , the second folded part covering the first.

   When a tape is to be bonded to the fabric, the coating may take place on the tape itself instead of on the body of the fabric or in addition, and may consist of applying the adhesive material to a tape. smooth or by applying a solvent to a ru-

 ban already covered with adhesive material.

   In cases where the folding is not sufficient in itself to effect a complete bonding of the parts, the machine may be further characterized by a folding roller for pressing the parts together. This roll can be supported in a bearing at one end only and pressed by a spring or springs towards the table, with the folded fabric passed between the roll and the table. If desired, a second roll can be provided, in a gap in the table and the folded fabric is engaged between this second roll and the spring roll.

   To deal with armhole holes in clothing, instead of the coating tool being on top of a flat table, it may be on top of a raised roll with the roll covered by a patch guard except immediately below the coating tool.

   By means of the present invention, it is possible to coat and assemble waterproof fabrics in one operation regardless of the nature of the adhesive material and the coating tool. The invention is to be distinguished from a simple juxtaposition of known coating and folding machines since the known coating machines are not intended to process a viscous adhesive material with rapid drying such as a rubber solution. could not be used in themselves in simple juxtaposition with a folding tool, and moreover the present invention also makes use, when using these known coating tools, of heating means to make them suitable for folding immediate or hemming.

   The mounting of the coating tool on an arm, as shown, makes it possible to coat at a distance from the edge of a piece of fabric. Depending on a variant, the tool or

 a number of tools may be suspended from above and may be able to rotate about a vertical axis so as to coat in different horizontal directions, suitable pressing means being provided.
