 EMI1.1
 formule générale : -Ri 0-0. Nti -11 't N OR N OH x

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Water-insoluble azo dyes and process for their preparation."
The present invention relates to new industrial products consisting of certain azo odorants which are insoluble in water, and more particularly by those which respond to the
 EMI1.1
 general formula: -Ri 0-0. Nti -11 't N OR N OH x

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

in which X represents hydrogen, the methoxyl group or bromine, R1 represents an alkyl radical and R2 and R3 represent aryl radicals which may contain one or more substituents.

It also relates to a process for the preparation of these water-insoluble azo dyes, which are valuable products whose shades range from purple to blue; this process consists in coupling the diazo compound with a base corresponding to the general formula:
 EMI2.1
in which the letters have the meaning given above, together with an erylamide of 2,3-hydroxynaphthoic acid or a substitute thereof, the components of the dye not containing a solubilizing group such as, for example, sulfonic or carboxylic groups.

The dyes can be used advantageously for the preparation of lakes which are oil-solid and very light-solid, carrying out coupling in the presence of a substratum. They are also suitable for dyeing or pigmenting high molecular weight plastic organic materials, especially natural rubber or synthetic products having properties similar to natural rubber.

By incorporating the dyes into rubber mixtures, products with very good fastness properties are obtained; in particular, they do not form a regrowth in white rubber. hitherto, only purple or blue monoazo dyes are known which possess properties.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

properties as good and responding to the stated purposes and which are of great industrial interest.

   The processes described in
 EMI3.1
German patents n040?, b66, dated January 19, 193S in the name of Farbwerks vorm.Meister, Lucius and Bruning, boo, 9sl dated September 20, 1927, 602,064 dated February 23, 1933 and 613,234 dated September 29 1933, the last three in the name of the Applicant, only allow the preparation of dyes or dyes or pigmentations on high molecular weight plastics with a range of shades which, beyond red, extends to to purple-red at most.

In any case, we obtain, from the bases corresponding to the general formula indicated above, dyes whose shades are essentially displaced towards the blue part of the spectrum, so that we arrive at dyes or dyes or clear and uniform blue pigmentations.

  Examples:
 EMI3.2
1 / 1b, 3 grams of 1-amino-2.5-dimethoxybenzene-4 "(oarbonyl-1-amino-4" -ohlorobenzene) are dinitrogenated in the usual manner.

The diazo solution is then mixed with sodium acetate in order to fix the excess hydrochloric acid. and the whole is introduced, with stirring, into a solution of 14.65 grams
 EMI3.3
of 6-methoxy-8.6-hyàroxynaphthoyiaminobenzene in dilute sodium hydroxide solution. The precipitated dye is filtered off by suction, washed well and dried. It forms a blue powder. The coupling operation can be carried out in the presence of a suitable substrate for the preparation of lacquers. The lacquers obtained in this way from this dye are solid to oils and give blue shades of good fastness to light.

2 / in the usual way 13.6 grams of
 EMI3.4
.-Amino-.5-dimethoxybenzene - .. (rsarbonyl-amino-benzenel. The diazo solution is made neutral to congo paper by the addition of sodium acetate and is introduced, with stirring, into a solution.

lution of 19.35 grams of 6-bromo-2.3-hydroxynaphthoyl-l '.. amino-3t-nitrobenzene in a solution of dilute caustic soda. The resulting violet dye was filtered off with suction, washed well and dried. it can be transformed in a known manner, by taking it, preferably, in the form of a paste, into coloring lakes which are solid in oils. Violet shades are obtained which are very fast to light.

3 / a coloring pigment is prepared as described in the
 EMI4.2
examples 1 and 2 from 15.3 grams of 1-amino-2.5-ditaethoxybenzene-4- (earbonyl-1'-amIno-4'-ehlorobenzene) and 15.35 grams of 2, s-hyàroxynaphtoyl-1'- emIno-s'-nltrobenzene; from this pigment, purple coloring lakes with good oil and light fastness properties are obtained.

4 / a colorant is obtained, as described in
 EMI4.3
Example 2, from 13.6 grams of 1-amino-2.5-dimethoxybenzene-4- (ca rbon3rl-aminob enzene and 16.9 grams of 6-methoxy- .3-hydragynaphtoyl-lt-amino-3 ' Nitrobenzene From this dye, which forms a blue powder, blue color lakes of good oil and light fastness can be prepared in the known manner.

5 / Using in example 1, instead of 15.3 grams
 EMI4.4
of - 1-amino-Zbb-dimethoxybenzùne-4- (oerbonyl-17-amino-4t-chlorobenzene), 16.7 grams of 1-amWO-2.5-diethoybenzene-4- (earbonyl l'-amino-4'-chborabenzene ), blue color lakes with similarly good properties are obtained.

6 / preparing a coloring pigment suitable for dyeing or pigmentation of products. rubber base, as described in Example 1. Next, 4 percent of the colorant is incorporated into a suitable mixture of rubber crepe, fillers, sulfur and a vulcanization accelerator and the mixture is vulcanized. in a vulcanizing press, for about 12 minutes, at a vapor pressure of 3 at-

spheres above atmospheric pressure. a bright blue vulcanization product is thus obtained, of good fastness to light, which does not give off exudation and does not present
 EMI5.1
no effloresoenee or regrowth when products are stored.

When the mixture of rubber crepe, the usual additional ingredients and 4 percent of the colorant indicated above is cold vulcanized by introducing it into a solution of sulfur chloride in gasoline, a product is obtained. vulcanized having the same properties as the vulcanized product described above.

7 / The coloring pigment described in Example 3 can be used as follows, to dye or pigment artificial horn prepared from casein: 200 grams of casein lab, 8 grams of zinc white and 1 are mixed. gram of the dye and the mixture is hardened by treating it with formaldehyde. This gives a mass resembling horn and exhibiting a bright violet color, very good solidity properties.
