<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Apparatus for ligating by means of metal wire.
The invention relates to an apparatus for tying by means of metal wire by twisting the two ends of the tying wire together, both for surgical and general applications. It is intended to provide a simple, practical and efficient apparatus. inexpensive construction, quickly giving a tight ligature without risk of breakage at the level of the twist and being able, in addition, itself ensure the automatic breaking of the twist when the latter has the desired number of turns.
The invention consists in that the pinging member in which the two ends of the ligature wire are taken to allow twisting, is guided so as to not be able to turn in a rectilinear guide provided at one end with a passage eye ends of the ligature wire and in that said pinging member comprises a screw return device taking on the guide and making it possible, on the one hand, to move the pinging member in this guide in order to tighten the ligature by bearing in the guide passage eye, and on the other hand to turn the

guidance with the pinging member with respect to this screw return device in order to obtain, as the ends of the wire are twisted and by bringing the pinging member closer to the eye of passage of the wire in the guide,
the desired wire for the twist.
The pinging member may include, facing the eye for passing the wire through the guide, a jaw which, pierced with a hole coaxial with this eye and secured to a nut for a threaded rod, jaw shape fixed relative with the threaded rod forming or carrying the movable jaw, said threaded rod extending axially outside the guide and carrying a nut bearing on this guide to form the return member of the clamping device.
The pinging member can advantageously be held at the end of the guide comprising the eye for passing the ends of the wire, by a coil spring threaded on the threaded rod and bearing on the guide at its other end.
The guide is preferably formed by a tube comprising a lateral cutout giving access to the pinging member.
In order to clarify ideas, the accompanying drawing represents an exemplary embodiment of the invention.
Fig.l is an elevational view with parts in axial section, the two ends of the ligature wire simply being engaged in the apparatus.

The tube 12 forms a guide to a slider 13 guided in the tube so as not to be able to turn, by a groove 14 in which a screw 15 engages.
This slide constitutes a vice having a fixed jaw 16 and a movable jaw 17 integral with a rod 18 threaded at 19 and acting in the bore 20 of the jaw 16 in the manner of a pin. The threaded rod 18 is screwed by its part 19 into the ooulisseau 13 which forms a nut for it, in a threaded bore coaxial with the bore 20.
The tube 12 carries at its ends two caps 21 and 22.
The cap 22 is pierced, coaxially with the bore 20 of the slide 13, with a bore 23 which forms a passage eye for the ends of the ligature wire 24. The cap 21 passes through the rod 18 through an unthreaded hole and serves as a passage. point of support for the coil spring 25 which is threaded onto the rod 18 and bears on the slide 13 to maintain it normally with its part 16 in contact with the cap 21.
A flywheel 26 is wedged on the rod 18 and this rod 18 comprises, between the flywheel 26 and its threaded part 19, a threaded part 27 on which the flywheel 28 is screwed.
The tube 12 has a notch 29 (Figs. 5 and 6) making accessible the fixed 16 and mobile 17 jaws of the vice formed in the slide 13.
The operation is as follows: The piece to be ligated 30 being surrounded by the ligature wire 24, the ends of this wire are engaged through the bores 23 and 20 between the two jaws 16 and 17 and the two ends, drawn by the 'notch 29 of the tube 12 (Fig.l), are clamped in the vice by lowering the jaw 17 on the jaw 16 (Fig.2) by means of the handwheel 26.
The slider 13 is then moved away from the cap 22 by screwing the handwheel 28 on the threaded part 27 of the rod 18 (Fig.3) against the cap 21, in order to tighten the ligature 24. The two ends
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of this ligature 24 are then twisted together at 31 (Fig. 4-) by rotating the tube 12 relative to the flywheel 28 kept fixed, which has the effect of moving this flywheel 28 away from the cap 21 as and when twisting, to allow the slider 13 to gradually approach the cap 22 to give the wire necessary for the formation of the twist 31 while maintaining the tightening of the ligature.
As will be understood, the twisting can be continued until the moment when the two threads break and which can be determined for a given thread by the spacing between the point 16-17 of pinging the threads and their point of entry into the thread. the passage 23, as well as by the length of the pitch of the screw 27 of the rod 18.
It can be understood that the invention is not linked to the embodiment described and shown by way of example,
