<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Elle consiste, mise à part cette disposition princi- pale, en certaines autres dispositions, qui s'utilisent de pré- férencé en même temps et dont il sera plus explicitement parlé ci-après, notamment: en une deuxième aisposition, consistant à avoir recours, pour la commande automatique des transmissions du genre en ques- tion, à une dynamo entraînée par l'arbre concuit et pour laquel- le la tension aux bornes varie en fonction de la vitesse à'en- trainement, et à relier ladite dynamo a des Mécanismes sélec- teurs répondant à des tensions différentes pour obtenir ainsi la distribution de l'énergie auxiliaire aux organes dont la ma- noeuvre permet, selon nécessité, le passage d'une combinaison de vitesses de marche avant à une autre combinaison immédiatement supérieure ou inférieure;
eh une troisième disposition -- plus spécialement rela- tive au cas où un embrayage progressif relie l'arbre moteur des transmissions du genre en question à l'arbre d'entrée de la botte de vitesses -- consistant à faire agir l'organe de manoeu- vre (pédale) de l'embrayage sur un distributeur général de l'é- nergie auxiliaire agencé de manière que l'intervention de cette énergie soit seulement possible quand ledit organe occupe une position correspondant au desserrage de l'embrayage;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
dit embrayage progressif de manière que le circuit soit seule- ment fermé quand ledit organe occupe une position correspondant au desserrage de l'embrayage;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
A
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
Si on abaisse ensui-
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
position montrée sur la fig. 3.
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>

<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>

II Improvements in variable speed transmission control devices, in particular for automobiles ".
The invention relates to control devices for variable speed transmissions; and it concerns more especially (because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest), but not exclusively, among these devices, those for controlling the gearboxes of automobiles.
Its aim, above all, is to make these devices such that they allow, in a simple and rational way, to obtain the permutations between the different gear combinations (combinations of forward gears, neutralization, reverse).
It mainly consists of maneuvering the components, which in transmissions of the type in question make it possible to obtain the permutations of the different combinations of speeds or of walking, by an auxiliary energy,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
such as the depression or the pressure of a fluid, and to ensure the distribution of this auxiliary energy by electrical means, the preselective intervention of which can be caused, at will, in an automatic or manual manner.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions, which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below, in particular: in a second facility, consisting in having recourse , for the automatic control of transmissions of the kind in question, to a dynamo driven by the concuited shaft and for which the voltage at the terminals varies as a function of the driving speed, and to connect said dynamo to Selector mechanisms responding to different voltages in order to thus obtain the distribution of the auxiliary energy to the components, the operation of which allows, as necessary, the passage from one combination of forward speeds to another immediately higher combination or lower;
eh a third arrangement - more especially relating to the case where a progressive clutch connects the drive shaft of transmissions of the type in question to the input shaft of the gearbox - consisting in making the gearbox act. operating (pedal) of the clutch on a general auxiliary energy distributor arranged in such a way that the intervention of this energy is only possible when said member occupies a position corresponding to the release of the clutch;
. in a fourth arrangement - more especially relating to the case where a progressive clutch connects the drive shaft of transmissions of the type in question to the input shaft of the gearbox - consisting in establishing a switch in the circuit which supplies the electrical means by which the permutations of the various operating combinations are observed, said switch being controlled by the operating member of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
said progressive clutch so that the circuit is only closed when said member occupies a position corresponding to the release of the clutch;
and in a fifth arrangement, consisting in establishing a switch in the circuit which connects the dynamo to the selector mechanisms for the automatic control of the transmissions of the type in question and in controlling this switch by the member (accelerator) which regulates the power supplied. to their motor shaft so that the circuit is only closed when this member occupies a position close to that for which this power has a minimum value.
The invention relates more particularly to certain modes of application as well as certain embodiments of said arrangements; and it relates more particularly still, and this as new industrial products, to the control devices of the type in question, comprising application of the said provisions, the special elements and tools specific to their establishment, as well as the variable speed transmissions, in particular those motor vehicles, equipped with similar control devices.
And it can, in any case, be well understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawings, which supplement and drawings are, of course, given above all by way of indication.

According to the invention and more especially according to that of its modes of application as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which preference should be given, proposing to constitute a device for control for the automatic gearbox, this is done following retort or similar.
As regards the change of speeds, it is constituted in any suitable manner and for example as usual. In what follows, it will be assumed, first of all, that the gearbox comprises, as is well known, gear trains corresponding respectively to the different combinations of speeds for forward and reverse gear, setting in or apart from the action of each of said combinations being obtained by the displacement of sliding gears or sliding gears which are generally maneuvered by means of the ordinary gear lever and by forks moving said gears in an axial movement in one direction or in the other.
As these devices are well known, they have not been shown in detail in the drawings.
For the embodiment shown, by way of example, in FIGS. 1 to 4, we have that the gearbox comprises a combination of reverse gear, three combinations of forward speeds, the reverse gear being obtained by moving a fork 1 or other similar actuator in the direction of arrow A, and first gear by moving the same component in the opposite direction (arrow B). Likewise, the grip of the 2nd gear is obtained and the direct grip by the movement of a similar member 2 respectively in the direction of arrows C and D.
For the implementation of the invention, instead of the ordinary cover of such a box, a plate 3 is established which serves as a support for most of the components described below and the forks 1 and 2 are ordered by rods 11 and 21 capable of sliding axially in housings of said support
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
port 3. To move said shafts we use these pistons
2 2 double-acting 1 and 2, housed respectively in cylinders 4 formed in said support 3. It follows from the foregoing that the activation of one of the operating combinations is
2 2 obtained by moving the corresponding piston 1 or 2 in the direction of arrow A, B, C or D provided for this combination.
The displacement of the pistons is obtained by means of a fluid under pressure or depression (liquid or gaseous) and preferably by the effect of the negative pressure prevailing in the suction line 5 of the engine.
The action of depression on the desired side of the pis-
2 ton 1 or 2, which must intervene, is obtained by one or the other of the inlet distributors 6 and 7. The return of the pistons to their neutral position is obtained by means of separate distributors 8 and 9 controlled respectively by the piston 11 and 2 For this purpose each rod 1 or 2 1 is connected to the corresponding distributor 8 or 9 by means of a lever 81 or 91 articulated at a fixed point and bearing on the shaft and on the distributor by pivots engaged in 'elongated eyes.
To obtain movement in one direction or in the other of the inlet distributors 6 and 7, use is made of
A lénoîdes or coils 10, 101, 10 and 10 engaged freely on the ends, in magnetic metal, of these distributors and corresponding respectively to reverse gear, first gear, second gear and direct drive. Return springs 10 return the distributors 6 and 7 to their middle position (FIG. 1) when the solenoids are not energized.
In the conduit 11 which connects the suction line 5 of the engine to the intake distributors 6 and 7, a slide or the like 12 is established, remotely controlled by a rod or a cable 13 and which can occupy two characteristic positions, a first corresponding to neutral (fig. 1) and a second
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
xth corresponding to forward or reverse gear (fig.
2 to 4).
In the same duct 11 a second drawer or the like 14 is established, which is constantly urged towards its closed position by a spring 15 (fig. 1) but which can be moved so as to establish communication between the ducts 5 and 11 when the clutch pedal 16 is brought to the disengaged position. To this end, an arm 17 is mounted on the clutch control shaft which rests on one end of the spool 14 to move the latter against the action of the spring 15 when the clutch pedal 16 is pushed back. .
To facilitate understanding of the invention, the manual gearbox preselection control will first of all be described, although this control should be considered more as an accessory or “emergency” and only occurs when 'we do not want or can not use the automatic control that will be described next.
To obtain the running permutations by a manual control, one uses, for example, an operating device established within the reach of the driver and which is constituted by a button or a lever 18 capable of sliding and of turning. rotate on its axis 19, electrically isolated from said button.
When the latter occupies the position shown in FIG. 1 it is inactive (neutral). When one acts by pulling on the button 18, an enlarged part 20 of the axis 19 is brought into contact with a terminal 21 which is connected by a wire 22 to the source of electricity 23, for example to the battery d. 'Accumulators. On the other hand, a uoigt 24, carried by the axis 19, comes to rest on a protruding stud 25. In the wire 22, a switch 26 is established which cooperates with a contact 27 controlled by the clutch pedal 16. being mounted, for example, on the free end of the spool 14 so that the switch 26 is closed only when the pedal 16 is in its disengaged position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
While stationary, if you want to obtain reverse gear, the drawer 12 is moved from its neutral position (fig.
1) to its active position (fig. 2), and action is taken by pulling on button 18 as explained above until finger 24 comes into contact with dead pad 25. Knob 18 is then rotated. until finger 24 comes into contact with pad 28 reserved for reverse gear and connected by wire 29
A to solenoid 10. A mark (not shown) provided on the button or on the axis 19 allows the needle 24 to be placed in this characteristic position *
The solenoid 10 is however not yet energized because the circuit 22-29 by which it can be connected to the current source 23, is interrupted at 26.
It is therefore indeed a preselective maneuver by which an operation (reverse gear) is prepared which can only take place when the driver makes an additional maneuver. This consists in loosening the clutch, by lowering the pedal 16, which closes the switch 26 by the contact 27. We thus take advantage of a maneuver which must be done in any case in order to perform the operation. gear switch.
Contact 26 remains on as long as pedal 16 remains down and in this way circuit 22-29 is
Closed and solenoid 10 is energized. It thus attracts the intake distributor 6 and brings it to its characteristic position shown in fig 2. Lowering the lever also opens the spool 14, so that the vacuum can act by the duct 11, the spool 12, the duct 30, the inlet distributor 6, the duct 31 and the passage 31a on
2 the upper face of piston 1. On the underside of the piston acts the atmospheric pressure through the passage 32, the duct
2
33, distributor 6 and port 34.
The piston 1 is therefore moved in the direction of the arrow A and drives the distributor 8 by the lever 81, 6.
When the whole thing came to an end, it occupied
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
eg the position shown in fig. 2 for which the fork 1 has been moved; 'a sufficient amplitude to obtain the engagement of reverse gear. It is then sufficient to raise the clutch pedal 16 to obtain the vehicle's recoil in ordinary conditions. By raising the pedal
AT
16, the circuit of the solenoid 10 is interrupted and the distributor 6 returns to its central position for which it closes the inlet of the duct 33. On the other hand, the spool 14 is closed by
2 the raising of the pedal so that the piston 1 remains in its characteristic rear narcotic position.
When you want to return to neutral, it suffices to return the drawer 12 to the inactive position shown in FIG. 1 and to place the finger 24, by unerotation of the button 18, opposite the outgoing stud 25. The clutch pedal 16 is then lowered so that the vacuum acts not the conauit 11, the spool 12, the duct 35, the distributor 8 and passage 36 on the underside
2 upper piston 1 which is therefore returned to its middle or neutral position (fig. 1) for which the distributor 8, driven by said piston, has returned to its initial position and closes the outlet of the duct 35. When the assembly is thus returned to the sleeping point (fig. 1), the pedal 16 can be raised. Temporary closing of switch 26 has no effect since all circuits are interrupted at 25.
To go into first gear we bring the August
24 opposite a stud 36 connected by a wire 37 to the solenoid 101,
By lowering the pedal 16, the drawer 14 is opened and the switch 26 is closed, which causes the excitation of said solenoid 101.
This attracts the distributor 6 and thus allows the vacuum to act through the duct 11, the spool 12, the duct 30, the distributor 6, the duct 33 and the passage 32 on the underside.
2 lower part of the piston 1 to move it in the direction of arrow B shown in fig. 3 ,, the distributor 8 and the fork 1 being driven in the same direction. The atmospheric pressure acts on the upper face of the piston 12 through the duct
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
31, distributor 6 and orifice 44. When pedal 16 is raised, circuit 22-37 is interrupted which returns distributor 6 to its neutral position and spool 14 is closed which stops the effect. of the vacuum on the piston 1, and the latter thus remains in its active position (fig. 3).
If we then wanted to return to neutral, it would suffice to bring the finger 24 towards the dead stud 25, to move the slide 12 to its position in FIG. 1 and to disengage which would make the depression act on
2 the upper face of the piston 1 through the duct 35, the distributor 8 and the passage 38 until the distributor 8, in-
2 dragged by the piston 1, or returned to its average position for which it closes the outlet of the duct 35 (FIG. 1).
On the other hand, being in first speed and if we want to pass the second speed, we bring the finger 24 to a preselection position facing the pad 39 connected by a wire 40 to the base.
2 lenoid 10 reserved for second gear. If we then lower
After the pedal 16, the circuit 22-40 of this solenoid 10 is closed, which brings the intake distributor 7 to the position shown in FIG. 4. As the pedal 16 also caused the opening of the drawer 14, the vacuum acts through the duct 11, the spool 12, the duct 41, the distributor 7, the duct 42.
2 and the passage 43 on the upper face of the piston 2 which drives the distributor 9 and the fork 2 in the direction of the arrow C which causes the grip of the second speed.
Atmospheric pressure acts on the underside of the piston 2 2 through the duct 45, the distributor 7 and the orifice 46. When the pedal 16 is raised to engage, the circuit 2-40 is interrupted at 26 and the effect is removed. of the vacuum by closing the slide 14 so that the piston 22 remains in its active second speed position. If we wanted to return to first gear, it would suffice to bring the finger 24 opposite the stud 36. By lowering the pedal 16 we close the circuit 22-37 of the solenoid 101 which brings the inlet valve 6 to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
position shown in fig. 3.
In this position the depression causes the displacement of the piston 1 as explained above for the grip of the first speed and furthermore it acts by the conduit 30, the distributor 6, the conduit 47, the distributor 9 and the valve. passage 48 on the underside of the piston (fig.
3) which moves the piston 21 in the direction of arrow D. The piston drives the distributor 9 in the same direction until it closes the outlet of the duct 47 which immobilizes said piston 2 and the fork 2 to their respective neutral positions. We therefore simultaneously obtain the disabling of the second gear and the grip of the first gear and
2 the piston 1 remains in its active position (fig. 3) when the pedal 16 goes up to engage.
It should be noted that the grip of the first gear can only take place when the second gear has been deactivated because, retort clearly visible in fig. 4, passage 32 is interrupted by piston rod 2
2 2 and the lumen 32a, formed in this rod, does not establish the com-
2 munication only when piston 2 has returned to its neutral position (fig. 3).
Being in second gear and if we want to switch to direct drive, we bring the finger 24 opposite the connected pin 49
3 to the solenoid 10 by the wire 50. When the pedal 16 is lowered, the circuit 22-50 of the latter is closed and the latter attracts the distributor '7 towards the bottom of FIG. 4 which causes the vacuum to act, through the open slide 14, the conduit 11, - the slide 12, the conduit 41, the distributor 7, the conduit 45 and the passage 51, on the underside of the piston 22. the upper face of the latter being in communication with the free air via the passage 43, the duct 42, the distributor 7 and the orifice 52.
The piston 2 therefore moves in the direction of the arrow D, which brings the fork 2 and the distributor 9 to their respective positions of third gear or direct drive. The entry into play of this is obtained by raising the pedal 16.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
To return to second speed, it suffices to bring the finger 24 opposite the stud 39 and to disengage so as to
2 close circuit 2-40 of solenoid 10 and blow off the vacuum through ducts 11, 41, 42 and 43 on the upper face of piston 2, which drives fork 2 in the direction of arrow C and restores the grip of the second speed. This comes into action when the pedal 16 is raised.
It follows from the foregoing that the device as described makes it possible to obtain all the desired permutations between the combinations of the vehicle by the elective pre-operation of the button 18 or the like, the upward or downward passage to the new combination before taking place when the driver considers it useful to lower the pedal 16 to pay the costs.
On the other hand, it should be noted that the solenoids or the like are not energized and that the vacuum only acts when the pedal 16 is in its disengaged position, that is to say for a very short time. In addition, the ducts as seen 31, 33, 42 and 45 cooperate with radial passages, such as 32a, formed in the rods 11 and 21 of the pistons 12 and 22 so that these rods act as drawers to close off some of the ducts when one of the pistons occupies a characteristic position which prevents the negative pressure from acting, through these closed conduits, in the cylinder 4 corresponding to the other piston.
Finally, if the spool 12 is brought to its neutral position (fig. 1) and if the clutch is disengaged, the vacuum acts through the conduits 35 and 47 to automatically return the piston or pistons.
2 2 1 and 2 in their middle or neutral position regardless of the active position currently occupied by one or the other of these pistons. In fact, in this case, the corresponding passage 36, 38, 48 or 52 communicates with the vacuum source via the distributor 8 or 9 and this communication is automatically interrupted.
22 stinks when piston 1 or 2 and valve 8 or 9 have returned to their middle position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
Having thus described the operation of the gearbox by manual and preselective control, the following will explain how the permutation between the different combinations of forward gear is obtained by a fully automatic control. Of course, in order to obtain reverse gear, it is necessary to manually operate the retort button 18 explained above by putting the finger 24 in contact with the stud 28.
The button 18 and the conductive part 20 of its axis 19 occupying their neutral position, shown in FIG. 1, if you want to go to first speed, push button 18 back until it comes into contact with pads 53 and 54 of a switch, these pads being respectively connected by wires 55 and 53, to the switch 26 controlled by the pedal 16 and to the oscillating lever 57 of a switch, said lever resting freely on a pad 58 connected by a wire 59 to the wire 37 terminating in the solenoid 101 reserved for actuation. of first gear.
When the pedal 16 is seated to disengage the circuit 22-55-59 and 37 of the solenoid 101 is therefore closed and the pressure is made to act as explained above to obtain the grip of the first gear. This is therefore obtained by a simple operation of the button 18 to close the switch 53-54 and by lowering the clutch pedal 16.
To switch to second and third speed, an automatic and elective pres control system is used, which can be formed as shown in FIG. 1.
Is driven by a shaft integral with the movement of the vehicle wheels, for example by the output shaft 60 of the box, a dynamo 61 of the type of those whose terminal voltage varies as a function of the speed of the rotor. For the example shown, it has been assumed that the inductor 62 of the dynamo is supplied by the battery 23. It has also been shown the dynamo 63 constantly driven by the motor and intended to charge the battery 23 by being connected to it. ci by wire 64 and the main switch 65. A safety circuit breaker k65 can be set, including
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
known, between the dynamo 63 and the battery 23 to protect the latter in the event of overvoltages.
Likewise, well-known protective means can be added to the dynamic 60 which limit the voltage to a determined value, for example a circuit-breaker established in its excitation circuit, a voltage regulator or an automatic switch. , for example centrifugal, driven by the shaft 60 and which interrupts said circuit as soon as the Venicula exceeds a determined speed, to which moreover corresponds a given voltage across the terminals of the dynamo 60.
The terminals of the dynamo 60 are connected respectively by wires 67 and 68 to the input and to the output of the coils 69 and 70 of two electromagnets cooperating respectively with oscillating armatures 71 and 72. These armatures are al- themselves respectively connected to oscillating levers 57 and 73 among which the lever 57 has already intervened for the actuation of the first gear. The electromagnets are arranged or adjusted so that they attract their armatures for determined voltages different from the current flowing through them, these voltages being chosen in accordance with the # and 35 km / h vehicle speeds, for example 20 km / h / to which we want to keep the passages to the second and third speed.
With the vehicle in first gear, if the speed of the vehicle is accelerated, the dynamo 61 is driven at a progressively increasing speed and when the vehicle reaches, for example, a speed of 20 kra / h, the voltage at, around this dynamo has become sufficient so that the electromagnet 69 can attract the armature 71 and the lever 57.
The latter, constantly connected to wire 56, thus supplies a pad 74 connected to the lever
73 which itself rests freely on a pad 75 connected to the wire
40 leading to the solenoid 103, the electromagnet 69 therefore constitutes a preselector with automatic action and it suffices for the driver to lower the pedal 16 for the clutch to be obtained.
2 ge, the excitation of the solenoid 10 and the displacement of the piston
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
a for the grip of the second gear as explained above. The venicle is driven through this combination of speeds when pedal 16 is raised.
If, for some reason, the vehicle speed drops below the critical speed of 20 km / n, adopted as an example, the voltage at the terminals of the dynamo 61 would become insufficient for the electromagnet 79 to retain. its frame 71, which would re-establish the circuit at 58 and allow the driver, by lowering the pedal 16 to disengage, to return to first retort gear explained above.
On the other hand, being in second gear, if the driver accelerates the speed of his vehicle, the voltage across the terminals of the dynamo 61 increases in the same proportions and at a given time, for example at the critical speed of 35. km / h, this voltage becomes sufficient for the electromagnet 70 to attract its armature 72 and apply the oscillating lever 73 to the stud
375 connected to the wire 50 leading to the solenoid 10 which prepares the entry into play of the third gear. It is then sufficient, retort explained above, for the driver to lower the pedal 16 so that it disengages and at the same time causes the grip of the third gear. By raising the pedal 16, one obtains the clutch and the drive of the vehicle in direct drive, the cir-
3 fired from solenoid 10 being interrupted at 26.
It should be noted that the voltage for which the armature 72 is attracted by its electro 70 is greater than that which is necessary for the electro 69 to attract its armature 71 so that the supply of the pad 76 has + Place by the 'intermediate pad 74. When, for some reason, the speed of the vehicle falls below the critical speed of 35 km / h for example, the electro 70 releases its armature and the lever 73 leaves the pad 76 for fall back on stud 75 corresponding to the grip of the second gear.
Maneuvering the pedal 16 then allows the driver to change to second gear and drive the vehicle by this combination.
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
To prevent the electromagnets 69 and 70 from being constantly under tension, one inter / eale in the wire 67 (or 68) leading to the electros a switch 77, controlled by the pedal 78 of the accelerator and one arranges this switch of so that the circuit is only closed when the pedal 78 is in its raised position, for which the normal supply to the motor is interrupted. When the pedal is moved away from this position and the vehicle moves at a determined combination of speeds, the electric power supply circuit is interrupted.
For switching to a different speed combination to be possible by means of the automatic preselective control, it is therefore necessary for the driver to first stop acting on the pedal 78 of the accelerator. operator which is also normal.
In fig. Another embodiment of a preselective and automatic control similar to that described in detail above has been shown. In this case the device is used for automatic control of the four forward gear combinations of a gearbox for which reverse gear is obtained independently by a remote control 79 (cable, linkage, etc.). ) which serves to move a reversing pinion (not shown) established in the box and whose arrangement is well known.
In this case, the free ends of the inlet distributors 6 and 7 are made to act on the solenoids 101, 102, 103 and
4 10 corresponding respectively to the four combinations of forward speeds, the functions of these distributors and solenoids being the same as those explained above. The solenoid 101 is energized as for the example ae in FIG. 1 when the driver, after having closed the switch 20, controlled by the button 18 (not shown) of the circuit 65-66, lowers the pedal 16 and connects this circuit by the switch 26 to the source of electricity 23. The current then passes through the lever 57, the pad 53 and the wire 59 to the solenoid 101. To go to the second

. and in the third $, as for the recent example, the electromagnets 69 and 70 and the oscillating levers 57 and 73 with their contact pads 74 75 and 76 are brought into play. fourth speed we bring in an additional electromagnet 80 with its armature 81 which is connected to an oscillating lever 82 permanently connected to the pad 76 and applied freely to a pad 83 connected to the solenoid 10 of the third speed when the voltage supplied to the electro 80 is not sufficient to attract the armature 81. On the other hand, when the fourth gear can intervene, this armature 81 is attracted and comes into contact with a pad 84 connected by a wire 85 to the solenoid corresponding to the fourth gear.
The operation of this control is therefore in all points analogous to that explained with regard to FIG. 1.
Of course we can add to the electromagnets 69, 70 and 80 adjustment means, well known, by which we can modify at will the voltage for which they attract their armatures, for example by modifying the mass of the cell. the latter, which makes it possible to adjust at will the critical speeds of the vehicle for which the attraction of the armatures is obtained and, consequently, the putting into or out of action of a determined combination of speeds.
Instead of mounting all of the actuators described above in place of the ordinary gearbox cover, said assembly can be mounted on one of the side walls of the box or group the members in two or a larger one. nomore this parts so as to reduce their bulk, these parts can then be mounted on the walls of the ooite. In either case the transmission of the movement of the pistons 21 and 22 to the forks 1 and 2 takes place by appropriate levers.
In the foregoing it has been admitted that the gearbox has gears with sliding pinions and that electrical means, such as solenoids, are used to cause

The invention could however be applied under the same conditions to gearboxes of a completely different type for which the permutations of the speed combinations are obtained by reciprocating displacement, by translation or rotation of mechanical members comparable to forks. 1 and 27 These members exist, more especially, in planetary gearboxes comprising, as usual, movable parts intended to establish temporary solidarity between rotating members (clutches) or between a rotating element and a fixed element (braking).
The automatic control device can also be applied to gearboxes for which the influence of the different combinations of speeds is obtained by means of electric or electromagnetic means incorporated in the gearbox or forming part of it. . In this case, it suffices to connect the electromagnets 69, 70 and 80 respectively and directly to the corresponding electric or electromagnetic means in order to thus obtain the operation of the gearbox without the intervention of the fluid servomotors (at . depression) since electricity then intervenes directly to supply the auxiliary energy necessary for this operation.
As a result, a control device is obtained for a variable speed transmission, which by simple and rationally functioning means allows the preselective maneuvering of any kind of gearbox to be obtained. by using an automatic or manual control at will. The particular constitution of this device also makes it possible to mount it on existing gearboxes, in place of their cover and the usual gear lever, without it being necessary to add to the gearbox. very constitution of the box of essential modifications.
As it goes without saying and as it already results from what

above, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts, which have more especially been included; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants.
