 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  PERFECTION IN THE SMOOTHING AND POLISHING OF
HARD MATERIALS, AND ESPECIALLY GLASS.

   The invention relates to the working of hard materials and relates in particular to the smoothing and polishing of these materials, more especially glass, using rubbing tools.

   In its patent No. 414,311, application No. 323,018 of March 11, 1936, the applicant has proposed, in order to work hard materials in good conditions, in particular to carry out the smoothing and more especially the polishing of glass, tools shaped as a body of revolution, and in particular in the form of cylinders, driven in rotation around their axes and furthermore moved simultaneously on the surface of the work.

   And among the displacements other than the rotation around their axes, of the friction tools, provision has been made, in particular, for displacements, which can be reciprocating, taking place perpendicularly, or in a manner substantially perpendicular, to the axial direction. friction cylinders, as well as complete displacements.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 mental, which may be alternating, taking place parallel or in a manner substantially parallel to the axial direction of the friction rollers.

   The present invention relates to a practical embodiment of the process for working hard materials, and in particular for smoothing and polishing the glass defined above, as well as to embodiments of clean apparatus. to enable this achievement.

   According to the invention, the friction tools in the form of cylinders receive, simultaneously with a rotational movement around their individual axes, displacements on the surface of the work which are executed simultaneously in two main directions forming an angle between them. different from zero and 180.

   According to another characteristic of the invention, several friction tools in the form of cylinders are mounted together on a common frame, which is driven in translational movements in the two aforementioned main angular directions, said tools being mounted parallel or not to each other on the said chassis.

   According to yet another characteristic of the invention, cylindrical rubbing tools actuated and mounted as indicated above can be placed on either side of the objects or glass plates to be worked, so as to smooth and polish. simultaneously both sides of these objects or plates.

   And so that one can fully understand how the above-defined characteristics can be practically achieved, a preferred embodiment of an apparatus for grinding and polishing objects or objects will be described in more detail below. glass plates, schematically illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

 simultaneous polishing on both sides of the structure.

   Referring to fig.l, 1 denotes a work consisting for example of a sheet of glass or ice. In what follows, this structure will be considered either as immobile, or as animated by a displacement, continuous in the direction F, or the opposite direction, or alternating in these directions, or even as animated by an alternating displacement. following a direction such that
F1 for example. rubbers @ 2 denotes cylindrical tools, which may be made in any way appropriate to the work to be performed, and, for the grinding or polishing of glass, preferably as will be explained later.

   These cylindrical friction bodies 2 are, in the example, arranged parallel to each other, and journaled in a frame or chassis 3, the journals 4 at both ends, or at one end only, as shown, passing through a spar 5 of the frame or chassis 3 and receiving wheels or pinions 6 to ensure their rotational drive around their axes.

   The control of this drive is obtained for example by means of an electric motor 7, mounted on the chassis or frame 3 and the intermediary of a shaft 8 carrying wheels or pinions 9 suitable for engaging. with wheels or pinions 6.

   The arrangement may be such that all the friction members 2 are driven in rotation in the same direction, or else, as shown, some members 2 are driven in rotation in one direction and the others, for example the members 2 of alternate positions. , are rotated in the opposite direction.

   As indicated above, in addition to their rotational movements around their axes, the members 2 are driven in movement on the structure in two main directions, forming between them an angle other than zero and 180, these movements being able to be ensured independently. for each of the components 2, or by a single command for all of these components.

   In the example, the chassis or frame 3 is animated by simultaneous movements taking place in the two main directions OA

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 and OB, forming between them an angle substantially equal to 90, but it should be understood that this angle could be different.

   Likewise, in this example, all the points of the frame 3 are driven by the same movements, but it also goes without saying that one could provide for different movements, or having different amplitudes for the different points of the frame, depending on the results. that we want to obtain.

   In the case of the example, the following movements OA and OB are ensured by shafts 10 carrying crank arms 11, joined by pivots 12 to lugs 13 of the frame. One or more of the shafts 10 is or are rotated in a movement which may be uniform or varied, the rotational control being provided by any suitable mechanism, for example, as shown schematically, using an electric motor 14 mounted on the frame (not shown) of the device and via a worm 15 of the motor shaft and a helical wheel 16 fixed to one of the shafts 10.

   In operation, the rotation of the members 2 around their axes forms on the surface of the work scratches directed perpendicular to these axes, and the combined translations of these members form on this surface scratches which intersect the first and intersect each other. they ensure that the work is done, other things being equal, either faster or in a more perfect manner than with turntable devices.

   The cylindrical friction members 2 can be established in any way appropriate to the work to be carried out, but as the range of these members on the work is relatively very extensive, provision has been made for an organization of these members which ensures their performance. suitable application on the work in all their extent.

   For this purpose, and as shown by way of example in Figure 2, for working glass and the like, the friction members 2 are sectioned, each of the sections 17 preferably being established as below.

   On the shaft 4 are fixed, by keying, flanges 18, comprising an outer circular rim 19, or equivalent fins, and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 on the other hand, a circular rim 20 is established, comprising lateral flanges 21, preferably attached.

   Between the internal circular rim 19 and the flanges 21 are mounted elements having a certain elasticity, such as for example discs or plates 22 of rubber or of a material providing substantially equivalent results.

   Finally on the rim 20, we mount a friction lining
211 ment, for example, made of felt for polishing glass.

   All the sections 17 being thus constituted, a friction member 2 will be obtained, all of the parts of which can be applied in a practically complete manner to the surface of the structure 1.

   Of course, the assembly described is only an example, and other assemblies giving equivalent results could be adopted.

   Finally, in order to work and for example simultaneously polish the two faces of the structure 1, a device with friction members as defined above, or the like, as shown diagrammatically in fig.3 is mounted on either side of this structure. .

   In this figure, a device with rubbing members is arranged above and another device with rubbing members is arranged opposite, below the structure 1, this structure being supposed to be placed horizontally, but it must be understood. that the work could be arranged in any other way, for example vertically, and the friction member devices placed in a corresponding manner. dante in suitable positions.

   The device with upper friction members is connected to a frame 23 advantageously containing the member 14 for controlling the rotation of the shafts 10, which frame is suspended by a pin 24 from a lever 25, articulated by the pivot 26 to a fixed console 27 and comprising an adjustable counterweight shown at 28.

   The device with lower friction members is connected in a similar manner to a frame 29 also containing the member 14 of an axis 24 on rotation control of its shafts 10 and supported by a counterweight lever 30, articulated by the pivot 32 to a fixed console 33.

   Using the said frames, and by an appropriate adjustment of the masses,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 or positions, or both, of the counterweights 28 and 31, it is possible to apply to the work the desired working pressures and for example equal on its two faces.

   As indicated above, the work 1 can be animated with its own movements, it being understood that these will be suitably correlated with those of the friction members to obtain the desired effect.

   As goes without saying, the invention is in no way limited to the arrangements more especially described and shown, but on the contrary it encompasses variants and equivalents.
