<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Improvement in handlebars for oyales.
The present invention relates to improvements
EMI1.1
.MX metal handlebars for cycles and more especially to -7-IT- those in metal or light alloy such as duralumin.
It had already been thought, in order to lighten the cycles, to make the handlebars in duralumin or the like, but this metal is less resistant to various stresses due to the forces exerted on the handlebars.
At the place of the greatest stresses, that is to say to the seotions oonsidered in contact of the handlebars with the eye of the stem, the handlebars could present a weak point, going up to rupture under great efforts.
The object of the present invention is to obviate this drawback and essentially resides in a metal tube covering the central part of the handlebars, projecting on each side the eye of the stem by a useful length in order to partially transfer the various stresses which are manifested in the section produced by a plane tangent to each of the ends of the eye of the stem.
The tube covering the central part of the handlebar can be provided with a longitudinal slot allowing a slight variation in its diameter, in order to fit perfectly and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
without possible sliding the handlebar, by tightening the eye of the stem.
In the accompanying drawing is shown, by way of example, an embodiment of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the central portion of the handlebar according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on A-B of FIG. 1.
According to the embodiment shown, the handlebars 1 are reinforced at its weak points by a tube 2 exceeding by a useful length the width of the eye of the stem.
Before giving the desired shape to the handlebars 1, the tube 2 of the desired length is slipped on the latter with hard friction.
To obtain a greater fixing of the assembly, a longitudinal slot 3 is provided in the tube 2, which serves to prevent the handlebars from breaking, as a result of the forces exerted on it, at a section where the stresses are maximum, c ie at the ends of the eye of the gallows.
These sections considered will be those formed by a diametral plane drawn at the ends of the handlebar recess; in fact, the bending moments with respect to the main axes will be maximum there.
The handlebar, once bent, is passed with its tube 2 through the eye 4 of a stem 5 (see fig. 1).
The diameter of the eye 4 is adjustable by bolt 6, which makes it possible to form an undeformable block of the handlebars 1, of the tube 2 and of the stem 5.
Indeed, as a result of the existence of the slot 3, the diameter of the ring 2 can be modified on the force exerted by the nut 6 on the open eye 4. In this way, the stresses are distributed in part. along the tube, which prevents breakage at the ends of eye 4 of the stem, while keeping the handlebars in position

desired, and without significantly increasing the weight.
According to another embodiment, one could, if the metal permitted it, provide that the tuba 2 is welded to. handlebars; in this case, there would be no need to trace slot 3.
The length of the ring is preferably three times its diameter; depending on the metals or alloys, it is easy to understand that its length and thickness can vary.
In order to lighten or enhance the tube, it is possible to provide certain notches 7 without thereby affecting its strength.
The invention has been deorite and illustrated purely as an indication and in no way limiting, and it goes de.soi que.de many modifications can be made to its details, without departing from its spirit.
