<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
cet ester.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
L'emploi d'une partie des membres du groupe nouvellement indiqué présente un autre avantage essentiel, à savoir leur plus grande aptitude à servir comme non-solvants, dès 1' éthérifioation, et de simplifier ainsi tout le processus de la production de l'ester cellulosique. Les diluants employés pendant l'éthérification doivent posséder, entre autres, les propriétés suivantes : ils doivent avoir un pouvoir gonflant pour l'ester oellulosique, mais sans exercer un pouvoir solvant appréciable sur cet ester; ils doivent être facilement séparables de l'agent d'acétylation et de l'acide qui se forme par la décomposition de celui-ai ( par exemple par distillation );
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
fibreuse.
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

"proceeds from the stabilization of oellalosic esters".
The French patent? 755981 of March 24, 1933 describes a process for stabilizing cellulose esters, which consists in treating the esters, separated from the reaction bath, in the swollen state and without dissolving them, with liquids capable of eliminating the oellulose ester. harmful impurities ¯ it contains, without dissolving appreciable amounts of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
this ester. This treatment is optionally carried out hot and under high pressure. The impurities to be removed are above all sulpho-compounds of the cellulosic ester, which arise during the preliminary esterification, carried out with the aid of a catalyst containing radicals derived from sulfuric acid.
As suitable stabilizing liquids, as indicated in the aforementioned patent, besides alcohols, lower fatty acids and esters.
If it is desired to avoid any hydrolitic action of the stabilizer on the organic groups of the cellulose ester, it is generally not used as stabilizing agents alcohols or other compounds containing oxhydriles and acting as hydrolysers, at least when l The cellulose ester still contains residual amounts of oatalyst capable of significantly accelerating hydrolysis.
Now, it has been found that in order to stabilize aellalosic acid esters without having recourse to saponification, it is possible to use not only lower fatty acids and their esters, but also advantageously other derivatives of fatty acids and of lears esters. Important among the compounds which can be used as stabilizing agents in accordance with the present invention are the following organic compounds: poly-basic organic acids and their esters, esteracids, esters of polyoxhydril compounds, etherified oxy-acids in the group hydroxyl, ether aoids and their esters (ester ethers).
The compounds mentioned above, as well as a part of those qae already mentions the French patent N 755981 can be designated by the global formula: R '(OR' ') n (COOR' '') m 'this formula indicating sealement the groapes and not their mode of connection. In this formula, R1, R '' and R '' 'are oon- stitated by hydrooarbon radicals which have not undergone a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
substitution with a halogenated residue, nitro or an analogous residue, indifferent with regard to the cellulose ester. R 'and R' '' can also mean hydrogen, R 'can also be deleted.
The indices m and n can be equal to or greater than 1; n can also be zero. However, the cases where n = o and m = 1 were already prevalent in the French patent? 755981.
One or more compounds of this kind can be used for stabilization, simultaneously or consecutively, in the undiluted state or in the presence of an indifferent diluent, especially diluents, when the undiluted stabilizing agent is endowed with an appreciable solvent power with respect to the cellulose ester.
The stabilization process is carried out by a combination of hot and cold treatments of the cellulose ester, freed from the etherification bath. The catalyst residues which are physically retained, for example by adsorption, are first removed under cold conditions, followed by hot removal of those which are chemically fixed. The stabilization can be stopped as soon as a sufficient amount of the catalyst retained by the cellulose ester has been removed so that the remainder of the catalyst can no longer be harmful.
If necessary, stabilization will be followed by washing, extraction or displacement, with the aim of completely eliminating the residues of the stabilizing agent, or any traces of catalyst, and above all to rid completely cellulose ester of fatty acids. for the latter process, it is even possible to use compounds capable of hydrolysing, such as alcohols and water, an appreciable hydrolytic action of these compounds being no longer possible if appropriate conditions are maintained and especially if the the catalyst residues are very carefully removed. Everything that has already been described in the Belgian patent is also applicable to the new group
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of compounds.
Of the class of stabilizing compounds to be used in accordance with the present invention, there are some which possess greater stabilizing power than that of the unsubstituted fatty acids and their eaters, advocated by the transis patent. 755981. On the other hand, there are among the newly indicated compounds bodies the use of which has other advantages over that of the compounds previously offered in the same bat. In general, the stabilizing power goes hand in hand with the solvent power with respect to sulfuric acid, which does not mean, however, that bodies with less solvent power with sulfuric acid are not. at all usable as stabilizers.
In certain cases, it is possible, by mixing two or more compounds, to obtain a mixture of a more considerable stabilizing power and greater than that of each of the constituents.
As constituents of such stabilizing compositions, it is also possible to use, at the same time as the compounds mentioned above, the compounds described in French patent No.
755981, formed by a radical that is to say of an organic acid and an aloozy radical having a low molecular weight and incapable of a hydrolytic action, optionally diluted by suitable indifferent solvents. Compounds containing, next to an oarboxyl oa groape of an etherified carboxyl group, other oxygenated groups such as the etherified group,
distinguished by superior stabilizing power. Compounds containing the aaetyl residue in general give better results than derivatives of higher fatty acids.
If the class of compounds which forms the basis of the new process according to the invention is used, the end of stabilization will generally be reached more quickly and this already because it is also possible to stabilize at a temperature.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
higher, without applying a pressure greater than that of the atmosphere, the boiling point of these compounds being higher than that of the compounds which have not undergone substitution.
Another essential advantage of the employment of part of the members of the newly indicated group is their greater ability to serve as non-solvents, from etherification, and thus to simplify the whole process of the production of the. cellulosic ester. The diluents used during the etherification must have, inter alia, the following properties: they must have a swelling power for the oellulosic ester, but without exerting an appreciable solvent power on this ester; they must be easily separable from the acetylating agent and from the acid which is formed by the decomposition of the latter (for example by distillation);
finally, they must exhibit as great a solvent power as possible for sulfuric acid, when the latter is used as an etherification catalyst. one can, without difficulty, choose from the newly indicated group of compounds capable of effecting stabilization, a whole series of bodies exhibiting all the qualities which, from what has been said above, should be required of diluting agent used as a constituent of the etherification bath.
If the same compound is used as a stabilizing agent and as a diluting agent for the etherification in a heterogeneous medium, the very economical countercurrent method can be applied to all phases of the process. Having employed the stabilizing liquid first for stabilizing and then for cold washing, it will be used again, after adding the dehydrating agent, as an etherifying bath.
the fatty acid can then be used, which accumulates in such a detherification bath during its application, after neutralization of the re-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
sidue of the catalyst, to subject the cellulose, during a new load, a preliminary treatment, during which part of the fatty acid is extracted by the cellulose, It is only then that a separation of the cellulose is carried out. the residual fatty acid from the stabilizing liquid, for example by distillation.
It is generally necessary, as the French patent N 755981 discloses, to carry out the stabilization several times, by means of the stabilizing compounds, or of their mixtures, because the accumulation of catalyst residues can cause a rapid decrease in the power. stabilizer da liquid aid stabilizer and decomposition of the oellalosiqae ester dae to hydrolysis caused by the presence of acidolytic acid.
The regeneration of the stabilizing liquid can be carried out by suitable means, in a batch or continuous manner, for example by neutralization or by adsorption of generally acidic impurities, using calcium carbonate, calcium oxide, basic silicates with active surface etc .... Another purification method can also be used, which consists of etherification of the acid impurities, by the addition of quantities of alcohol small enough not to cause appreciable saponification of the residues. acyls of the cellulose ester. The traces of water, which form during this neutralization or etherification, do not generally interfere with the operation of the stabilization process.
However, where appropriate, they can be removed by water-fixing compounds, or else by distillation.
The stabilization process can be accelerated, by using the group of compounds qai constitutes the basis of the invention, in a manner analogous to that defined in French patent N 755981, by adding inorganic catalysts which do not bind to cellulose. or on the oellalosiqae ester
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
under the conditions existing during stabilization, such as for example perchloric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc.
The use of a certain number of compounds of the newly described group, that is to say little or not soluble in water and endowed with sufficient swelling power towards the cellulosic ester, finally makes it possible to operate the stabilization of the fibrous ester in a particular method and different from that which has been described tillol. It allows stabilization to be carried out with lower amounts of stabilizers, even in the presence of large amounts of water, without appreciable saponification of the cellulosic ester occurring. After having carried out a cold washing of the fibrous ester with the stabilizer liquid, the major part of the latter is filtered off, and the mass composed of the fibrous ester and the quantity of stabilizer adherent is treated with hot water.
Stabilization is effected, in this case, by the quantity of stabilizing liquid retained by the fibers of the cellulose ester and which coats them individually, thus protecting them against the hydrolitic action of water. The removed catalyst passes rapidly into the aqueous layer and thus continuously separates from the stabilizing liquid. Since stabilization is carried out according to this method (which may be called the suspension method), the remains of the stabilizer can be removed by steam disstillation at a higher temperature. This particularly economical process gives products whose solations are distinguished by a partial clarity.
The application of the stabilization process, in accordance with the present invention, is not however limited to cellulose esters prepared according to the method in heterogeneous medium, which is distinguished by the conservation of the texture.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
fibrous. The process can also be used advantageously for the stabilization of cellulose esters obtained by any other manufacturing method, such as the heterogeneous medium method, where the final product is obtained by precipitation of the cellulose ester from its solution in the etherification bath, It is above all the method of stabilization of the suspension / described in the previous paragraph which allows, in this case,
a particularly economical realization of stabilization.
The following examples, which moreover have no limiting nature, will clearly illustrate the use of a certain number of compounds from the group on which the process according to the invention is based.
Example 1. A part (by weight) of linters is imbibed with excess acetic acid. It is left to stand for doze hours, it is introduced into a wringer, of the type of the nitration centrifuge for example; filtered at 2.4 parts, and the mixture is treated for two hours per year with a mixture of 10 parts of 98.5% acetic acid and 0.1 part of concentrated sulfuric acid. The mass centrifuged at 2.2 parts is aoetylated by a mixture composed of 3.2 parts of acetic anhydride, 8.6 parts of ethyl glycol aoetate and 0.05 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid (d = 1.84), first by cooling , then to +25 to 30 0, rotating the essorease slowly, and circulating the liquid gently.
When the acetylation is completed, the acetylation mixture is removed by suction, the acetylated fibers are treated, first twice in the cold and then three times at 100 ° C., with ethyl glycol aetate, removing this acetylated fibers. last by spinning and renewing it each time. The first heat treatment is one hour, the following two two hours each. Then, the stabilizer is removed with hot water
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
and steam.
The acetate finally washed well, also in the spinner with hot water, shows, after drying, a yellowing point at 265 0.
Example 2.- A sample, acetylated as described in Example 1, is extracted for a few hours, after two prior cold washings with ethyl glycol acetate, with boiling ethyl acetate, in an apparatus of the genus Soxleth and then dried. This gives the yellowing point at 2400 o.
Example 3. An acetylated sample, as described in Example 1, is washed three times, in the cold, with ethyl-glyool acetate. it is boiled in water three times, renewing the water each time, then it is dried. The yellowing point is 235 0.
Example 4 - a part (by weight) of linters, treated first with acetic acid and with a mixture of aoetic acid and sulfuric acid, as described in Example 1, spin-dried at 2.4 parts, is acetylated, first by cooling, then gradually warming up to +25 o. with a mixture composed of 8. 6 parts of butyl glycol acetate, 3. 2 parts of acetic anhydride and 0.07 part of concentrated sulfuric acid. The fibrous acetate separated from the aaethylating bath is extracted, twice in the cold and then four times in the hot state, with ethyl acetate. Hot extractions last one to two hours each. for each hot extraction, ethyl acetate can be regenerated, stirring with precipitated barium carbonate and filtering.
After drying, the fibrous acetate has a yellowing point at 237 C.
By varying the methods suitably, but in a substantially analogous fashion, examples 1 to 4 may employ such compounds as:
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
/ thylene glycol (boiling point +210 C), diethylglycerin mono-ketate (boiling point +208 C), ethyl ester of propyl-oxy-acetic acid (boiling point +1850 C), l ethyl ester of aoetoxy-aoétiqae acid (boiling point + 1790 C), ethyl ester of oxaliqae acid (boiling point +185 C), furfuryl acetate (boiling point + 1760 a), phthalic acid ester etc ...
If, for example, triaoetin or methylglycol acetate, compounds which exert a pronounced solvent power on the cellulosic ester, are used, the stabilizing agent must be diluted with the aid of indifferent liquids until that the oellulosic ester is no longer appreciably dissolved. To reproduce industrially all the operations cited in Examples 1 to 4, that is to say the separations of liqaidea from the fibrous mass and the substitutions of a liquid for aatre, one can use all the methods of the current technique, such as washing, extracting, moving etc ...
as well as devices suitable for these operations, such as mixing drums, diffusers, per- oolatears, filter funnels (natsohe), drum filters, roalant sieve machines, presses (hydraulic o @ screw), centrifuges or spinners (washing, extraction, nitration, automatic continuous flow, cellulose). For all the partial operations, from the pre-treatment to the final drying of the final product, the same apparatus can be used or indeed several different apparatuses. In the first case, we can put a point in an apparatus making it possible to treat the load in totality or in several parts.
Finally, all the operations can be carried out in the same apparatus and the material left there during the entire treatment.
