<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

In order to monitor the stresses undergone, for example, by the frames of machines, presses, rolling mills, etc., it is advisable to use devices which indicate the deformations, elongations, shortenings or also the bends resulting from fatigue in service. The use of clock movements to be measured is, for example, known in eccentric screw presses, etc., in a form where the measuring instrument is connected with a pull rod attached at a point. suitable of the press frame, which, by the sudden and frequent lengthening of the latter is set in motion and thus determines needle gaps. Given the harshness of the work, sensitive watch movements are not, in this arrangement, likely to fulfill their role in the presence of the forces which are manifested,
since the pheno-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
deformation processes are only of very short duration at each operation, for example 1/50 of a second, and act on the measuring instrument in the form of shocks; under these conditions, there is only a rapid back-and-forth movement of the instrument needle. With this rapidity of the movement of the hand, the watch movement tires excessively and moreover offers no guarantee of precise observation of the measurement of the deformation (elongation (, of the machine frame.
The auxiliary means which one has recourse to in order to remedy these drawbacks, namely the use of a rubbing indicator, is only an expedient, which does not lead to the goal, since practically it does not. It is hardly possible with continual efforts to maintain such an apparatus in a durable condition to meet the conditions.
If an apparatus considered for the use in question has to satisfy practical requirements, then instantaneous indication, such as the known instructions for use of measuring instruments makes it possible, is improper; measures must be taken so that the means of indication is stopped at maximum effort each time, so that an after-the-fact check is made possible for the foreman. In addition, the deforming shocks must not act directly on the indicating means, but the latter must, by its own action, follow the deformations and indicate them without being pushed.
By such an arrangement, the indications become exact, since a deviation of the needle beyond the position corresponding to the deformation which has occurred is prevented. It is only when a greater deformation takes place that the indicating means advances to a corresponding extent. Under these conditions, the monitoring of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
tation is particularly facilitated. The new device, which meets practical requirements, is characterized, in its systematic construction and in its arrangement, by an element which is connected with the machine body so as to be m @ in proportion to the deformations. This machine element now regulates the indicating means with regard to its position.
It is automatically blocked when a deformation which has occurred is completed, and to retain the indicating position, the element in question is connected with the machine body so that the downshift of the deformation. tion remains without influence on the position of said element. It is only during a subsequent stronger deformation of the machine body that the member which determines the position of the needle advances. The constructive form of the invention can vary in many ways.
The accompanying drawings represent, by way of example, some embodiments of the object of the invention. They all include the above-mentioned principle as well as other important features belonging to the invention.
In figure 1, 1 designates the body for which the deformations which occur in service are to be measured. On this body is placed, housed in a box 2, the indicator instrument which is provided with a needle 3, and whose pin 4, movable axially and subjected to the action of a spring, rests against the slide 10, that is to say the element mentioned above on several occasions and determined the position of the needle. Said element is fixed to a rod 7, which is, for its part, joined rigidly at 8 with the body or frame 1, and connected with the slide 10 by means of a pin 16 and a slot 17.
If now the frame 1 is subjected, for example during a pressing operation
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Zion, elongation, this deformation results in an axial displacement of: the rod 7 and a displacement of the slide 10 follows.
This driving of the slide 10 which, contrary to the execution given by way of example in the drawing, may be rectangular, takes place against the frictional resistance between said slide and the brake shoe 15, which is held in rubbing contact with the slide by the spring 13. The stop pin 4 follows the movement of the slide 10 without being able to gain speed. The movement of this pin 4 triggers the movement of the needle 3, the position of which always corresponds exactly to the elongation of the frame, for the reason which has just been indicated. At the end of the deformation, the rod 7, thanks to its fixed connection at 8, returns to its starting position without also returning the slide 10 to its starting position, since the bolt 16 will be able to descend freely into the slot 17.
The slide 10 is, by the friction against the shoe 15, retained in the upper position, and thereby the needle 3 also remains in its position which indicates the deformation.
If a subsequent frame elongation exceeds the last stated at any time, the slider is driven further in a proportional measure, so that it is still possible to take the measurement of the last largest strain. the frame of the machine at work; this created a simple means of controlling the service.
The apparatus according to figure 2 gives the same possibility. In this apparatus, the organ positively connected with the needle instrument, that is to say the cone-shaped slide 19, executes, at the moment when an elongation of the frame occurs, a movement perpendicular to the rod 7. This slide
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
bucket 19 which is itself provided with a graduation and which can serve as an indicating means, is subjected to the constant action of a spring 20 which tends to move in the direction indicated by a arrow, said wedge-shaped slide 19 which, in this case, determines the indicating position.
This movement - which, contrary to what is done in the construction according to figure 1, is triggered not directly, but indirectly by the deformation of the frame 1., and which is determined by the magnitude of the lifting of l element 21 acting as a clamping member, in combination with the degree of inclination of the wedge faces of elements 19 and 21-, initiates the movement of a stop pin 4, resulting in a proportional deviation needle 3.
In order to fix again in this case, as in the construction according to Figure 1, the indication position, the assembly of the rod 7 with the frame 1 at point 8 is chosen so that said rod remains stopped in the position moved to which it has been worn as a result of the lengthening of the frame 1; the friction between the elements 19 and 21 is generated by the spring 22 which bears against the frame 1 at 22. As mentioned above, it is convenient to operate the wedge 19 also as an indication means, so that depending on the magnitude of the gearing ratio of the movements, one of the instruments gives indications or measurements. of particular precision. Such a dual arrangement of measuring instruments is welcome in factories.
Figure 3 shows a construction which, after the foregoing explanations, is easily understood, and which works as follows: following the lifting of the wedge element 21, the wedge-shaped slide 19 is moved to the left by the spring 20, as in the construction according to FIG. 2. This slide which, itself, is provided
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
with a wedge-shaped pressure piece 23, stops the wedge 24 which serves as an indicator member and which can move vertically; during the displacement of the slider 19, the wedge 24 is lowered by a certain amount by its own weight or by the action of a spring or other means, thus indicating the extent of the deformation greatly increased.
The use of the apparatus thus constructed is particularly advantageous for the measurement of relatively small deformations since the multiplication established by the oblique surfaces allows measurements of the greatest precision.
The apparatus according to FIG. 4 is constructed according to the same principle as that which is the basis of the apparatus described above. The member which, by movement, indicates the measurement of the deformation, is here provided in the form of an eccentric disc 25, provided with a gradu ation.
This cooperates with a fixed index 26. The disc is subjected to the constant action of a spring 30, which has a tendency to rotate the disc in the direction indicated by an arrow. The disc 25 is prevented from rotating by the slide 27 which is in the idle state; the assembly of this slide with the rod 7 is made by a bolt 16 and slot 17 joint, as in the construction according to figure 1. On the -slider 27 which is subjected to the action of springs 21 is placed a shoe brake 28 which can oscillate around the pivot 29. When the frame 1 extends and the rod 7 rises, the brake shoe 28 is raised at the same time.
In this way, the spring force acting on the disc 25 becomes free and rotates the disc 25 eccentrically by an angle proportional to the height of lift of the brake shoe 28, thus indicating, at 26, the measurement of the deformation that has occurred. Thanks to the pivot mounting of the brake shoe 28 on the slide 27, the concave recess of said shoe fits the disc 25 in
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
all its positions.
The apparatus according to Figures 5 and 6 is constructed in a similar fashion. We have here given up a slider 27 like the one shown in figure 4. This slider is replaced by the rod 7, which, like in figure 2, is rigidly assembled with the frame at its upper end, so as to be able to move only in the direction of elongation of said frame 1.
The rod 7 is, at its lower end, guided in a straight line in a bearing, either directly or by means of an adjusting boot 31. The end takes behind the graduated disc 25, which is Thus found laterally guided, As shown in FIG. 2, a corresponding index 26 has been placed next to the graduated disc 25 as a mark on the rod 7. Yet another measuring instrument (clockwork movement 32), the stop pin 4 of which bears against a counter-stop 5 of a cross member 6. The axial displacement of the rod 7 when the machine body is deformed is effected by reacting against the spring 33 (see fig. 6).
By this movement, the disc 25 and also the hand of the clockwork movement 32 rotate, so that the deformation which has occurred can be verified by two means of indication.
