<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 1 est une vue en élévation et coupe centrale à tra- vers une pompe de graissage montée dans la paroi d'un réservoir à lubrifiant;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

IMPROVEMENTS TO LUBRICATION DEVICES.
The invention relates to improvements in lubricating apparatus and comprises an improvement or modification of the invention described and claimed in British Patent No. 444,493 which will be discussed in more detail hereinafter.
In the prior patent, a lubricating device was described comprising in combination a pump plunger, a pump body in which the plunger moves in a reciprocating motion and which comprises a lubricant outlet, a valve controlling said outlet-and rigid means for operatively connecting the pump plunger during its active stroke, with the valve, in order to positively move the latter from a closed position to an open position; a reserve chamber has also been provided which communicates with the pump body and which comprises means for modifying its capacity.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Such a lubricating apparatus will be referred to in the present application and the appended claims as a "lubricating apparatus of the specified kind".
UK Patent 444,493 describes a lubricating apparatus comprising a cylindrical, vertical lubricant reservoir and lubricant pumps mounted in the side wall of the reservoir so as to extend radially from a rotating cam. cylindrical disposed in the reservoir and mounted in its base, the rotation of the cam serving to actuate an agitator or a scraping device in the reservoir, as well as the lubricant pumps themselves.
The pumps have plungers which control inlet openings in the pump bodies and provided with protrusions at their front ends, intended to positively engage valve pistons controlling the outlets of the pump bodies.
The piston valves are mounted in such a way that they can move in an adjustable extent by closing the outlets, in order to regulate the quantity of lubricant delivered with each active stroke / of the plunger.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a lubricating apparatus of the type specified, in which the lubricant outlet of the pump cylinder is provided with a piston member, established with a lubricant passage passing therethrough, and mounted. in the cylinder so as to be capable of limited longitudinal movement therein, for the purpose described, and in which adjustment means is provided to modify the limits of said longitudinal movement.
The term "for the purpose described" used in the immediately preceding paragraph, and in claim 1, is intended to refer to the fact that the movement of the piston, which occurs during operation of the pump, serves to protect clean the aforementioned reserve chamber. The reserve chamber is filled with lubricant from the pump cylinder for a period of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
active stroke of the pump plunger, and it is only after the reserve chamber has been completely filled that any discharge of lubricant from the pump has occurred The amount of lubricant delivered at each active stroke of the plunger pump therefore depends, in accordance with the volume of the reserve chamber,
and in a pump constructed in accordance with the invention it is possible to modify the volume of the reserve chamber by varying the limits of the longitudinal movement performed by the aforesaid piston.
A lubricating apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention preferably includes a valve controlling the outlet of lubricant from the cylinder, integrally mounted with a valve chamber provided in the piston, and the outlet valve is preferably also of the rod type. In accordance with a constructive arrangement of the invention, the piston is hollow and includes a side opening intended to place the interior hollow of the piston in communication with the flow line of the pump, and the pump cylinder is then suitably. or advantageously established with stops to limit the movement of the piston towards the pump plunger, while a screw cap, passing through an end wall of the pump, serves as an adjustment means to limit the movement of the piston when it s' away from the pump plunger.
And in order that the invention may be more clearly understood, a preferred constructive example will hereinafter be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation and in central section through a lubricating pump mounted in the wall of a lubricant reservoir;
Fig. 2 is a section taken along line 2-2 of fig 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Like reference numerals have been used to designate like parts or components in both figures of the drawing. The form of lubricant pump shown in the drawing is intended to be used in place of one or more
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
several pump elements mounted in the wall of the lubricant reservoir of the apparatus described in prior UK patent 444,493, and it will be appreciated, with particular reference to FIG. 4 of said prior patent, that the wall of the lubricant reservoir is shown at 3 in the accompanying drawing.
Similarly, a cam for actuating one or more pump elements is indicated at 23 and a sleeve surrounding the cam is indicated at 29.
In the drawings accompanying the present application, a pump body is again designated by the reference 32 and it is mounted in the wall 3 of the lubricant reservoir by means of the thread 33. The pump body 32 comprises lumiès de. inlet 39, established in the lubricant reservoir and controlled by the pump plunger 34, which is mounted to move back and forth in the pump body 32, over a length of the body which includes the ports 39. The pump plunger 34 is provided with a front extension 37 as in the prior construction, for the purpose of ensuring positive operation of the pump outlet valve should this be required. The pump plunger 34 is moved, during its active stroke, by the pressure of the cam 23, and it is returned by the action of the spring 36.
As shown in the drawing, the pump plunger is of a shape similar to that described in the same-dated application no. 323,598, for "Improvements to reciprocating pumps", in the name of the applicant.
The plunger is established with a second element 4, provided with a head 35 intended to cooperate with the sleeve 29 of the cam 23, and it is pivotally connected, by means of the pin or pin 5, to a extension 6 of the plunger 34. The pin or pin 5 is advantageously carried by opposing jaws of a forked end of the element 4, between which extends the extension 6 of the plunger 34. The element 4 is advantageously provided with another pin 7, of substantially equal length
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
to the external diameter of an extension of the cylindrical walls of the pump body 32, located behind, beyond the inlet ports 39.
The ends of the pin or pin 7 are set to move in diametrically opposed slots 8, provided in said extension of the pump body 32. Clearance is preferably provided between the part 6 and the forked element 4, and advantageously - also part 6 is rounded as shown in Figure 2.
A hollow piston-forming member 9 is mounted in the pump body 32 and it comprises at its front end an opening constituting the outlet of the pump body. This outlet is closed by a valve 10 normally maintained on its seat by means of a spring 11, and comprising a rod 12 passing through the opening of the piston 9 and capable of being actuated positively by the pressure exerted by the extension 37. plunger 34.
The hollow piston 9 is provided with lateral openings 13 opening into a peripheral groove 14 in the middle portion of the member 9, which groove is such that it communicates with an outlet 15 provided in a front extension of the walls of the body valve for housing the piston 9. The outlet 15 leads to the pump flow line, in which a check valve 16 is conveniently housed. The construction of the valve 16 emerges clearly from Fig. 1 and therefore does not appear to need to be further described.
The end of the piston 9 which is remote from the valve 10 is closed by means of a screw cap 17 serving as an end support for the valve spring 11. The cap 17 is also subjected to the action of 'a spring 18 housed between the stopper and a stopper 19 serving to close the end of the extension of the pump body 32 carrying the piston 9. The stopper 19 carries a threaded rod 20, equipped with a locking nut 21 and a knurled head 22. The front end 24 of the rod 20 serves as a stopper to limit the outward movement, moving away from the pump plunger, the piston 9 and, by rotating the mo-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Letter 22, the position of the stop 24 and the extent of possible movement of the piston 9 can be changed accordingly.
The lock nut 21 serves to fix the rod 20 in any given position of adjustment.
The extension of the pump body 32 carrying the piston 9 is seen in plan, at 25, in FIG. 2, and this extension is provided with a duct 26 through which the lubricant which leaks beyond the piston 9 can be returned to the tank delimited by the walls 3.
A check plug 27 is also mounted in said extension 25, a slight rotation of this plug serving to reveal the outer ends of small passages arranged in the plug, and making it possible to immediately obtain an indication as to the satisfactory operation of the valve. pump, the internal ends of the passages in the stopper communicating with the peripheral groove 14 of the piston 9. The stopper 27 is normally fully screwed in, so that the passages formed therein are closed by the screw joint of the stopper 27 in the extension 25.
In the operation of the device which has been described, the rotation of the cam 23 serves to drive the pump plunger 34 in its forward or active stroke, and the spring 36 serves to drive the plunger 34 in its return stroke and to maintain the head 35 in contact with the cam sleeve 29. In the position shown in figure 1, the members have precisely completed a return stroke to allow lubricant to pass from the reservoir through the inlet ports 39 in the pump body. An active stroke of the plunger 34 first closes the inlet ports 39 and then, by applying pressure to the lubricant enclosed in the pump housing, serves to open the valve 10 to allow the lubricant to pass through the pump body. flow line.
If the valve 10 did not open under the pressure of the lubricant, for some reason (for example oc-
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
air in the lubricant), the extension 37 of the plunger 34 would serve to positively open the valve 10 by making contact with the valve stem 12.
If the head 22 of the rod 20 is rotated to provide a certain clearance between the stop 24 and the plug 17, the active stroke of the plunger 34, after having closed the inlet ports 39, serves to move the valve. piston 9 from the position for which its front end is in contact with the stops 40 provided inside the pump body 32, in the position in which the stopper 17 has been moved with regard to the clearance between itself and the stop 24, and comes into contact with the latter.
This movement of the piston 9 provides a reserve chamber between its front end and the stops 40, which is first filled with lubricant from the pump body before the valve 10 has any tendency to open.
The volume of the reserve chamber is modified in accordance with the adjustment of the stop 24, that is to say of the amplitude of the movement that the piston 9 can perform. A variation of the position of the stopper 24, that is to say of the limits established for the movement of the piston 9, modifies in accordance with the volume of the reserve chamber available for the lubricant trapped by the plunger in the body of the piston. pump and thereby varies the amount of lubricant remaining which can be delivered with each active plunger stroke.
A return stroke of the plunger 34 relieves the pressure on valve 10, which closes completely, and the combined action of springs 11718 and 36 and the pressure of the lubricant in the supply line between valve 16 and the valve. pe 10 is used to produce a return movement of the piston 9 and a return movement of the plunger 34, able to uncover the lights 39 and allow a new quantity of lubricant to pass from the reservoir into the pump body currently video

Modifications of the structure which has been shown in the drawing can be provided, for example by substituting a piston-valve mounted in the piston 9 for the rod valve 10 which has been shown.
