  Presse d'imprimerie

  A

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 une orbite excentrique qui est tangente à la périphérie du cylindre;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 description'du fonctionnement de la presse.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

  Printing press
This invention relates to printing presses and more particularly to those of the type in which a rotating printing cylinder forms one of the elements of a printing pair, and in which the arrangement and operation are studied so that a single printing can. be carried out at each revolution of the impression cylinder.

     The invention relates generally to the creation of a new improved printing press of this type.

  AT

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

More particularly, the invention is to provide, in connection with the impression cylinder of a press of this type, some auxiliary mechanism for handling the sheets, which is designed to cooperate with the impression cylinder in order. successively perform the margining, printing and delivery of a sheet during a single revolution of the cylinder, while at the same time maintaining the pointing or alignment precision by passing through the various changes of control acting on the sheet, then at the same time ensuring that the print is not smeared or blurred.

   In the operation of any printing press having a rotary printing element for printing separate sheets, the problem arises of picking up each successive sheet from its fixed position on the printing table of the press against the marks. or pointing devices, to increase the speed of the sheet until it reaches that of the form-bearing member, while maintaining the proper pointing or registration, and finally to transmit the printed sheet to the webs or delivery ribbons or other receiving mechanism.

   In most presses of this type, including two-turn marble and cylinder presses, the impression cylinder receives rotational movement at a constant angular speed and the cylinder clamps are established to successively grab the sheets on the table. margin while moving them at the speed of the impression cylinder. But some types

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 have members to allow the sheet to be picked up on the dump table while the gripper members are moving at a slower speed and to be gradually brought up to print speed; these members thus help to maintain the correct pointing or alignment during and after the transmission of the sheet.

   These latter presses include reversible or oscillating impression cylinders and some kinds of high speed rotary presses use feed rollers designed to bring the sheet from its resting position on the dump table to. speed of the impression cylinder and to reset it to that cylinder. In addition, in order to obtain an increased operating speed, a cylinder or transmission spider is often provided to receive the printed sheet from the impression cylinder before it has completed one revolution on this cylinder and deliver it to its suitable destination.

   It is, however, quite obvious that these expedients require relatively expensive installations and that by using transmission or delivery cylinders the sheets are turned over in the course of the job and that the fresh print is therefore prone to spreading or fogging. dirty ..

   The present invention is intended to achieve the general results indicated without resorting to an expensive or complicated mechanism of tipping and delivery. According to its preferred embodiment, there is provided an auxiliary set of transmission clamps associated with the printing cylinder and comprising

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 an eccentric orbit which is tangent to the periphery of the cylinder;

   the movement of the auxiliary gripper mechanism is variable during its cycle and designed to allow these grippers to grip a sheet on the marginalizing table while they are stationary or nearly stopped, to advance the sheet at an increased speed and, when it has reached the same speed as the cylinder, to transmit it to the usual clamps of the cylinder, then finally to return to their initial position to receive the next sheet during the printing of the first sheet mentioned.

   A device is also provided for successively withdrawing the sheets from the printing cylinder at a point situated inside the circle defining the orbit of the auxiliary gripper devices and for delivering each of these sheets passing through this circular orbit to intervals regulated in time, so as to avoid that the delivered sheet and the next sheet which is fed by the auxiliary grippers to the transmission point of the impression cylinder do not interfere with each other. It is noteworthy that the sheets are delivered with the print side up without having passed around a delivery cylinder and thus avoid smearing the ink and soiling the sheets.

   Various other new features including a particular control gear mechanism serving to harmonize the speeds of the auxiliary grippers at the various phases of cooperation with the impression cylinder and the dump table will emerge from

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 the following detailed description and the accompanying drawings which illustrate by way of example one embodiment of the invention.

   Figures 1 to 4 are schematic side elevational views of a rotary printing press embodying the principles of the invention; these figures allow a clear understanding of the operation of the auxiliary clamps.

   Figure 5 is an end elevational view of the press in which the delivery mechanism and certain other elements are removed for clarity; some parts of the mechanism are shown in vertical cross section. Figure 6 is a partial vertical sectional view taken on the line 6 - 6 of Figure 9.

   FIG. 7 is a view in substantially horizontal section along the line 7 - 7 of FIG. 8.

   Figure 8 is a partial side elevational view of the press.

   Figure 9 is a similar view of the opposite side of the press, various parts being broken away for clarity.

   To illustrate the invention, the accompanying drawings show a rotary printing press incorporating the various novel features of the invention, but the principles thereof can also be applied and adapted to marble and cylinder presses and to presses of other types.

   To make it possible to understand the invention more clearly, we will first describe the elements

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 essentials of the new press and their general functioning; Details of the various elements constituting the press will then be described, and their operating mechanisms will be explained after the functions and general operation of the press are understood.

  In this connection, reference is made first of all to Figures 1 to 4 schematically showing the essential elements.

   10 designates a rotary printing cylinder, which together with the form-holder cylinder 12 constitutes the printing pair between which the sheets are successively passed to receive the printing. The impression cylinder, where the impression cylinder 10 and the form cylinder 12 come into contact, is indicated at 15; it is placed in this case just to the right of the lowest point of the impression cylinder. The usual cylinder clamps for gripping and pointing the sheets in their proper position on the impression cylinder are indicated at 16. These clamps describe, during operation of the press, a circular orbit represented substantially by the periphery of the cylinder. impression and having its center in 18; this point also represents the axis of the impression cylinder.

   A marging table 20, provided with the usual front and lateral punching or framing guides (not shown) is arranged, as usual, at a point remote from the printing point 15 and, in this case, also at a point. certain distance of the form-holder cylinder 12. The reason why the marging table is placed in this way will appear in the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 description of how the press works.

   In order to successively transmit the sheets to be printed from the margining table 20 to the printing cylinder, an auxiliary clamp holder 22 is provided which is mounted on suitable arms 23 and which carries clamps 25 which can be constructed. customary, which are provided with leaf pointer members, and then actuated to grip and release a leaf at suitable intervals by a mechanism well known in the industry.

   The arms 23 of the clamp support are shown schematically in Figures 1 to 4 as being articulated at 26, and the clamps 25 thus describe an orbit 27 which is eccentric to the orbit of the clamps 16 of the cylinder and which is tangent to the table 20, then which is also tangential to the peripheral orbit of the cylinder clamps 16 substantially at the printing point 15. The inner sheet guide tapes 28 are disposed across the width of the press and approximately conform to the first half of the orbit 27 of the auxiliary clamps 25; they extend from the margining table 20 to the printing cylinder.

   Leaf guide tapes 29 are also provided near the lower segment of the orbit 87; they can support a broom 30 at their lower ends. The inner sheet guide tapes 28 are interrupted at 32 to provide an opening through which the printed sheet can be passed to the delivery tapes 34 by means of the release fingers 35 and rollers.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 propellants 36 disposed within the orbit 27 of the auxiliary grippers and near the periphery of the impression cylinder 10.

   We will now describe the operation of the parts of the press for handling ot printed sheets, these parts have been shown only schematically. In Figure 1, a sheet B has been pointed against the front and side guides of the screed table 20, and the auxiliary or transmission grippers 25 are about to grab the sheet.

  At this point, the grippers 25 are stationary or move counterclockwise at a very low speed, while the impression cylinder 10 rotates, preferably at a constant speed, around its. axis 18 also counterclockwise, in printing contact with the form cylinder 12, a feed sheet A being carried on the impression cylinder 10 by means of the cylinder clamps 16.

   Immediately after the grippers 25 grip the leading edge of sheet B and upon disengaging the front guides from the screed table, the auxiliary gripper mechanism moves approximately the first half of orbit 27 at increasing speed, by pulling the sheet B along the guides 28, as shown in figure 2.

   In the position shown in figure 2, the grippers 16 of the impression cylinder are about to release the first sheet A which has received its impression, so that the release fingers of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 sheet 35 can remove the sheet from the impression cylinder. When the auxiliary clamps 25 have reached the lower point of their orbit (as shown in figure 3) the rear end of the sheet B, which they pass along the guides 28, 29, has passed the opening 32 formed in the sheet guide tapes 28, and the leading edge of the printed sheet A passes through the opening 32 and over the delivery tapes 34. At this point, the movement of the auxiliary clamps is somewhat slowed down, so that the cylinder clamps 16 can pick them up in order to ensure the transmission of the sheet.

   In the position shown in figure 4, the printed sheet 4 is driven by the delivery bands or ribbons 34 and the leading edge of the sheet B has been brought by the auxiliary grippers 25 to the point of tangency 15 of the orbit 27 of the grippers. auxiliaries and the periphery of the printing cylinder 10, which is substantially the printing point between the elements of the printing torque. At this point, the auxiliary clamps 25 move at exactly the same linear speed as the clamps 16 of the cylinder and coincide exactly with them. At this moment, the usual gripper actuation mechanism associated with each set of grippers is released to disengage grippers 25 and clamp sheet B against the printing cylinder blanket by means of grippers 16 of the cylinder.

   Immediately after this transmission of sheet B from the auxiliary clamps 25 to the clamps of the cylinder has occurred, the clamp mechanism

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 auxiliaries moves rapidly following the remainder of its orbit 27 to return to its initial position at the edge of the marging table, where it is again stopped or nearly stopped, in order to receive the immediately following sheet C, which has been at this time suitably pointed or marked on the marginalization table 20 by means of the front and side guides.

  During this relatively rapid return movement of the auxiliary clamps 25, the sheet B is driven by the printing operation by means of the cylinder clamps 16 and is withdrawn from the printing cylinder by means of the release fingers 35, exactly as described in relation to the previous sheet A.

   It is easily understood that the elements described and shown schematically in Figures 1 to 4 constitute a mechanism ensuring the marginalization and the precise delivery of a sheet to the printing cylinder of a printing press, then printing on the sheet and delivery thereof to its proper destination on each revolution of the impression cylinder, this mechanism performing these operations without the use of complicated and expensive transmission cylinders or the like.

   An embodiment of the mechanism described in principle is illustrated in Figures 5 to 9 and is explained in detail in the following. The side frames of the press are designated 40 and 41; they are provided with suitable bearings 42 and 43 supporting the shaft 45 of the volume-holder cylinder 12. A pinion 46, which can be driven by any suitable source of motive force,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 is keyed to one end of shaft 45. This pinion meshes with pinion 47, which is keyed to one end of shaft 48 of impression cylinder 10.

  This shaft 48.tourne in bearings 50 and 51 carried by the side frames 40 and 41. The pinions 46 and 47 have the same diameter. The impression cylinder 10 and the form cylinder 18 having the same diameter are driven at the same speed and in rolling contact.

   The auxiliary clamps 25 are mounted on a bar 33 which is supported between the arms 33; these are fixed, for example by means of screws 53, to the gears
54 and 55, which are rotatably mounted on the large hubs 56 formed on or suitably attached to the side frames 40 and 41. Fixed flanges 60 provided on each side of the impression cylinder 10 are attached to a fixed portion of the press, for example by means of screws 61. These clamps can carry the tapes 28,29 serving as guides for the sheets, which are shown in Figures 1 to 4, but are deleted in Figures 5 to 9 for clarity. . The delivery mechanism has also been omitted in these last figures.

   The eccentricity of the mounting of the supports 22, 23 of the auxiliary clamps with respect to the impression cylinder 10 is evident from Figure 6, in which the axis of the auxiliary clamps is indicated at 26 and that of the impression cylinder at 18. .

   In order to move the grippers 25 along their orbit 27 at their varying peripheral speed, a suitable gear mechanism is provided connected to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 control with the pinions 54 and 55, which drive the mechanism of the auxiliary clamps and which will be described.

  The wheel 65, comprising an internal toothed ring 66 and an external toothing 67, is mounted for rotation on the right end of the shaft 45 carrying the form-holder cylinder, outside the elements 41 of the side frame. A sleeve 68 sits tightly in the hub of this wheel and rotates on shaft 45. Outside of wheel 65 is a sun gear 70 keyed to the shaft. Beyond this planetary wheel, the planet carrier 71 is mounted on the shaft 45 in order to be able to rotate with respect to it. The satellite pinions 74 are rotatably mounted, for example by means of the pins 73, on the two shorter arms 72 of the planet carrier 71; Planet gears 74 mesh with both the sun gear 70 and the inner toothed wheel 66 of the wheel 65.

   The outer toothing 67 of this wheel meshes with the pinion 77 keyed on the shaft 78, which rotates in bearings 79 and 80 carried by the side frames 41 and 40 of the press. The shaft 78 is provided, inside each of the side frames 40 and 41, with pinions 82 and 83, which respectively mesh with the pinions 54 and 55, which carry the auxiliary clamp mechanism 22, 25.

   The planet carrier 71 is provided with a lever arm 85 on the end of which is mounted a roller
86 disposed in and is intended to be guided by the eccentric slide 88 formed in the plate 90 carried by the end of the shaft 48 of the printing cylinder. Thus, the planet carrier or

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 spider 71 receives an oscillating movement imparted to it from the irregularly shaped slide 88. It is this movement which alternately produces acceleration and deceleration of wheel 65 to provide variable movement of the auxiliary gripper devices.

   The gear ratio from sun gear 70 to inner curtain 66 is 1: 3. The transmission ratio of the outer teeth 67 to the pinion 77 is 3: 1. The pinions 82, 83 and 54, 55 are of the same diameter. Therefore, the auxiliary clamps 26 would make a full revolution with each revolution of the printing cylinder 10 if the planet carriers 71 were to be held stationary. This is also true, although the planet carrier 71 receives an oscillating movement in both directions by means of the eccentric slide 88, because the latter is a continuous slide and this oscillating movement does not have to be. 'effect on the final relative number of turns of the auxiliary grippers and the impression cylinder.

   The shape of the eccentric slide 88 is such that the speed of the auxiliary grippers 25 is preferably zero or almost zero when a sheet is fed to these grippers, as shown in Fig. 1. In order to ensure a smooth flow. zero angular speed at the auxiliary clamps 25, the planet carrier 71 must have an angular speed equal to a quarter of that of the sun gear 70 and rotate in the same direction, this state ensuring zero speed of the wheel 65.

  Immediately afterwards, the auxiliary clamps must be

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 25 are accelerated so that the posterior end of the sheet held by these clamps passes the delivery line of the previous sheet through the opening 32 and is placed on the delivery tapes 34 before the arrival of the previous sheet .

  In Figure 8, the drive mechanism is shown in a position at a point at which the auxiliary grippers are about to receive this accelerated movement. In the position shown in Figure 3, the rear end of the sheet having passed the opening 32, it is necessary that the auxiliary clamps 25 are slowed down so as to allow the clamps 16 of the cylinder to pick them up, so that the transfer of the sheet can be made as shown in figure 4 which shows the position in which the linear speed of the two sets of grippers is the same and their angular speeds inversely proportional to their respective distances from their centers of rotation.

   As already described, after the sheet has been transferred to the clamps 16 of the impression cylinder, the auxiliary clamps 25 are again accelerated to assume the position shown in Figure 1, and then they are again. held fixed momentarily to receive the immediately next sheet. The cycle is then restarted.

   It is obvious, in the light of the description of the mechanism which emerges from FIG. 8, that a rotation of the planet carrier 71 in the direction of clockwise, imparted by the action of the slide

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 eccentric-88, produces an acceleration of the movement of the auxiliary clamps 25, while a counterclockwise rotation of the planet carrier results in slowing down the arms of the auxiliary clamps or even bringing them to l. 'stop.

   Any suitable mechanism can be used to actuate the release fingers 35 and then control the delivery rollers 36 and the bands or ribbons 34. The invention is not directed to the details of this mechanism.

   Likewise, the inking mechanism and other details of the press may be of any usual type and the impression cylinder or port cylinder may be triggered by suitable devices when no printing is occurring. desired.

   It is also evident that the principles of the invention can be readily applied to presses other than the rotary press illustrated, for example a marble and cylinder press.

   Likewise, various changes or modifications can be made to the embodiment illustrated and described without departing from the scope of the invention.
