     @ien que ces procédés soient connus depuis fort long- temps, ils ne sont pratiquement pas employés. La raison principale en est la suivante : laface de la couche plastique qui est collée @

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  REINFORCED GLASS AND ITS MANUFACTURING PROCESS.

   The present invention relates to a new reinforced glass consisting of the assembly of a single glass plate and a thick sheet of plastic material based on cellulose derivative. By the term "thick sheet" used in the present description, it is meant a sheet having a thickness of the order of 2 mm and more.

   The preparation of reinforced glasses, consisting of a plastic sheet coated with a glass plate on only one of its faces, has been known for a long time. The technique is the same as for reinforced glass with two glass plates and. an intermediate plastic sheet, with the difference that, during assembly, one of the glass plates is replaced by a backing plate which cannot definitively adhere to the plastic sheet. - After gluing the glass to the plastic, the backing plate is removed, leaving the reinforced glass of the type indicated.

     Although these methods have been known for a very long time, they are practically not used. The main reason is as follows: the face of the plastic layer that is glued @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 glass is withdrawn from any external influence, while the second face of the plastic layer is, on the contrary, subject to it.

  The result of this asymmetry is that the plastic sheet tends to undergo more or less significant deformations, deformations that the glass plate is requested to follow, which leads to internal stresses in the assembly.

   By using sheets of cellulosic plastic material of standard composition, that is to say containing approximately 75% of cellulose derivative and 25% of plasticizers, in order to prevent these tensions from leading to breakage of the glasses, it was necessary to before the following dilemma:
Or else to use a sheet of plastic material that is sufficiently thin and, in this case, one obtains composite plates having a very insufficient security character, this being a direct function of the thickness of the plastic sheet; or, for a thickness of the plastic sheet sufficient to ensure the desired safety, take glass plates of great thickness. This solution was very expensive.

   The Applicant has further observed that, in this case, the plastic material often tears off superficially, around the periphery of the assembly, a thin layer of glass, thus rendering the product unusable.

   Either of these solutions therefore appeared technically impossible; in fact, none was adopted.

   According to the present invention, it has been found possible to produce assemblies of the kind indicated, having a sufficient safety character, without the internal stresses constituting a risk of breakage or of surface rash of the glass.

  To do this, it suffices to use a thick and sufficiently soft plastic sheet.

   The field has found that in order to obtain the necessary softness, the composition of the cellulosic plastic sheet should include a proportion of plasticizer at least equal to 34%. Preferably, it will not be exceeded, in the setting.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 work of the invention, a proportion of 55%, to avoid obtaining a surface which scratches or deforms too easily.

   Under this condition, the thickness of the sheet may be adopted as necessary to ensure the desired security. This thickness may be of the order of 2 mm and more. It can reach one or several centimeters.

   It is possible, if desired, to protect the outer face and the edge of the plastic material by an impermeable layer (impermeable varnish, thin metal foil, etc.).

   It is described below, by way of nonlimiting example, the manufacture of a reinforced glass according to the invention:
Example 1. A glass plate 2.5 mm thick is covered on one of its faces, by spraying, with an adhesive coating consisting, after evaporation of the solvent used for the application, by:
Cellulose acetate: 50 parts
Ethyl lactate: 40 parts
Ethyl silicate: 10 parts
A plastic sheet 5 mm thick, consisting of:
Cellulose acetate: 58 parts
Plasticizer: 42 parts the plasticizer consisting of: Triphenylphosphate: 20 parts
Methyl phthalate: 30 parts
Triacetin:

   50 games
A polished metal sheet, not capable of adhering thereto, is placed on the second face of the plastic sheet, and the assembly is pressed for 10 minutes under a pressure of 12 kg / cm2, in a press heated to 115. is taken out of the press and left to cool; after which, the metal plate is detached. The reinforced glass obtained remains absolutely flat and there is no risk of spontaneously breaking.

   A particular mode of application of the following method

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 the invention consists in employing, no longer a thick sheet of highly plasticized plastic material, as indicated above, but several thin sheets of plastic material of current thickness and of current composition. after surface softening thereof by means of A plasticizer, the amount thereof - as long as their final composition - after homogeneous diffusion of the plasticizer - is brought within the limits specified above.

   The example below explains this particular mode of application of the invention:
Example2.

   5 sheets of plastic, each 0.5 mm thick and of the following composition: @@ cellulose ester 76 parts
Plasticizer, as in Example 1: 24 parts are immersed for 2 minutes in a bath, consisting of:
Ethyl lactate: 47.5 parts
Triacetin: 47.5 parts
Ethyl silicate: 5 parts, the temperature of which is maintained at approximately 45. The leaves are then assembled, below the surface of the bath, the softened sheets between a 2.5 mm glass plate. thick and a polished metal plate, not capable of adhering to the plastic mass. This assembly is taken out of the oain, it is s oumet with a light pressing, then it is autoclaved under 3 kg of pressure at 140 for 35 minutes.

   The mixture is cooled under pressure, then the backing plate is peeled off as indicated above. The outer face and the edge of the plastic layer are then covered with a waterproof varnish.

   The present invention is susceptible of various embodiments. As glasses used in the manufacture of the assemblies, different glasses can be envisaged, for example, ordinary window glass, ice, special glasses, glasses permeable to ultraviolet rays, colored glasses, etc. It is also possible to use

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 tempered glass. It is also not necessary to use flat glasses, the use of curved, concave, convex, cylindrical glasses, etc., coming within the scope of the present invention.

   For decorative use, it is also possible to prepare glasses according to the invention, the plastic layer of which is decorated, colored, engraved, cut or matted, on its surface or even throughout its thickness. Such decoration of the sheet of plastic material can precede or follow the assembly of the latter with the glass plate.
