<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

MOUNTING DEVICE FOR BRAKE HANDLES AND OTHER CONTROL UNITS FOR CYCLES, MOTORCYCLES,
AUTOMOBILES OR THE LIKE ".
Priority of a patent application filed in France on July 27, 1937.
We know that in cycles, motor cycles, etc. ... most of the control devices, and in particular the brake handles, are grouped together on the handlebars within easy reach of the driver.
However, until now these organs were articulated with yokes which were fixed on the handlebars by means of collars in several pieces aveo ears tightened by external screws.
Gold ears and clamping screws
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
were not only an annoyance for the cyclist but also a permanent danger of hanging onto and injuring himself.
The present invention proposes to remedy this drawback and provides for this purpose that the articulation yoke of each control member, brake handle or the like, comprises a complete collar with smooth outline and the fixing of this collar on the handlebar is provided by a screw housed in the yoke and oriented towards the part of the handlebar surrounded by the collar; a shim in the form of a shoe and housed in the yoke, is interposed between the screw and the handlebars so that the tightening of this screw applies perpendicularly over a relatively large surface of the handlebars and ensures a perfect and indefinite fixing without causing deformations in the region of interest of the handlebars.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
The rod 1 is a section through a brake handle and its yoke placed on a handlebar and provided with the fixing device according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of these same organs.
Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of an alternative application of the invention.
In the picture 1, we recognize the ordinary parts of a brake handle fixed to a handlebar; we see at 10 the actual handle which is articulated by means of a pin 11 to a yoke 12 mounted on the handlebars, of which 13 the corresponding part can be seen.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The yoke 12 is integral with an entire collar 14 which engages on the part 15 of the handlebar and, in accordance with the invention, the fixing of the assembly, yoke 12 and collar 14, on the handlebar 13 is ensured. by a screw 15 housed in the yoke and oriented perpendicular to the surface of the handlebars.
Between the tip of the screw 15 and the handlebars is interposed a wedge 16 which is guided in a suitable housing 17 formed in the ohape 12 so that the latter can also move perpendicular to the surface of the handlebar. .
Grooves or ribs such as 18 are respectively formed in the wedge 16 and in the housing 17 so that the movement of the wedge always remains well guided.
Finally, the surface of the wedge 16 which is in contact with the handlebars 13 has a concave shape as is shown at 19 in FIG. 2, so as to be able to closely match the substantially cylindrical surface of the handlebar 13.
Obviously, we make sure that the collar 14 has an inner diameter slightly larger than the outer diameter of the handlebar 13, whereby we can easily engage the collar on the handlebar, the screw 15 and the shim 16 being erased. in their accommodations.
The yoke 12 is brought into the chosen position on the handlebars 13, and, using a screwdriver, the screw 15 is acted on so that it pushes the wedge 16 towards the handlebars 13.
When the wedge 16 comes into contact with the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
handlebar, its direction of travel is perpendicular to the surface of this handlebar, so that there is no friction, no change in position or damage to the surface of the handlebar.
The screw 15 is screwed with moderate force, the wedge 16, the concave surface 19 of which matches the shape of the handlebar, grips the latter between it and the opposite part of the collar 14, so that the yoke is fixed on the handlebar in the selected position and will remain there until screw 14 is unscrewed.
To remove the yoke 12 from the handlebars, it suffices to perform the reverse maneuvers of the previous ones.
Due to the relatively large surface area of the wedge 16, the location of the wedge on the handlebars is not marked on the latter by any permanent deformation.
The shim 16 could advantageously be made of a metal slightly softer than that of the handlebars, alloys such as brass or bronze are particularly suitable.
The variant shown in fig. 3 has the same characteristics and therefore produces the same advantages as the embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2, the wedge, now designated by 20, is wider and instead of being guided in a housing of the yoke, it is now simply located laterally at the start of the collar 21; the mode of installation and the role of this variant are obviously identical to those of the previous embodiment.

Moreover, it is obvious that the invention is not limited to the examples which have just been described and that without departing from its general framework, any modifications necessary to the device could be made in the various cases of application.
This invention may be suitable in particular for fixing actuators on the steering wheel or the steering of a motor vehicle.
