Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Electrodes for secondary elements, especially with alkaline electrolyte.

   It is known to use as electrodes for secondary elements, especially with alkaline electrolyte, porous metallically conductive moldings in the pores of which the active composition has been added. For example, nickel hydroxide can be added to the pores of an electrode plate obtained by agglutination of nickel powder, by first impregnating the plate with a solution of a nickel salt, in then drying it and finally immersing it in an aqueous solution of caustic alkali.

   However, in order to bring into the pores an amount of composition

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 active enough to obtain a determined capacity, it is necessary to repeat this operation very often; in addition, each time the removed plate must be washed thoroughly with the alkaline solution and dried again before re-impregnating it. A uniform distribution of the active composition throughout the interior of the porous molding is only ensured if the impregnation is carried out by means of relatively dilute saline solutions. To obtain an electrode of determined capacity, it is then necessary to repeat the operating cycle: impregnation, drying, precipitation, washing and further drying, the more often the more diluted the saline solution used.

   However, it has been found that, in a simple manner and by using concentrated solutions, a uniform distribution of the active composition over the entire section of the molding is obtained by bringing the active composition into the pores thereof in the form of hydroxide or basic salts by cathodic polarization.

   For the cathodic polarization, solutions of nitrates of the metals which have to be introduced in the form of their hydroxides or of their basic salts into the pores of the molding will usefully be used as electrolyte. Other salts of these metals can also be used when operating in the presence of substances having an oxidizing action, such as nitrates of other metals, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorite, etc. It may be advantageous to add substances which increase electrolytic conductivity, such as alkali or alkaline earth compounds or compounds of magnesium or aluminum, or mixtures of these substances.

   The operation will advantageously be carried out by first impregnating the porous molding with an electrolyte.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 of the species indicated and then, avoiding the difficult preliminary drying, by polarizing it cathodically in a solution having good electrolytic conductivity, for example in an alkali sulphate or alkali hydroxide solution.

  A much more uniform filling of the pores of the molding with the active composition is thus obtained than was possible according to the methods known to date.

   The present process also virtually eliminates, even if repeating the impregnation and polarization, the risk of blistering of the molding sprinkled with active composition. It allows greater quantities of active composition to be introduced into the pores than before and consequently to significantly increase the capacity of the electrodes.

   EXAMPLE 1.

   -----------------
Impregnate a porous nickel plate, obtained by agglutinating carbonyl nickel powder, with an aqueous solution of nickel nitrate saturated at room temperature and immediately after, that is to say without drying, the po - larize cathodically under a high current density in an aqueous solution of 30% of caustic soda at a temperature of 70 ° C. until an intense evolution of hydrogen takes place. Having carefully rinsed the plate with water, dry it at a temperature of 100 to 120 C and repeat the described procedure several times. On tearing the plate a uniform distribution of the active composition is observed throughout the fracture surface.

   EXAMPLE 2.

   -----------------
Impregnate a porous iron casting with an aqueous solution of cadmium nitrate saturated at room temperature and cathodically polarize it in a solution.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 aqueous solution of caustic potash having a density of 1.25 and a temperature of 80 C, then rinse the plate with water.

  After drying at a temperature of 100 to 120 ° C., the plate has acquired in cadmium hydroxide approximately 15% of its weight.

  By repeating the operation three times it is possible to precipitate in the form of an active composition in the pores of the electrode molding 50% of the own weight of the latter.
