 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 nécessaire de procéder à un tondage supplémentaire ultérieur;
De procurer un procédé rapide opéré sensiblement en une phase dans lequel le tissu se déplace de manière continue pendant   l'apprtage   en se déroulant d'un rouleau dévideur en vue de l'apprêtage et en s'enroulant après l'apprêtage sur un rouleau renvideur;
De procurer un procédé par lequel on puisse coucher le poil duveté et le maintenir dans un sens particulier si on le désire;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

   Fluffing of fabrics has never been performed with complete success. Some fabrics go down very well, others less well and some others hardly suit it. Relatively thin soft tissues did not fluff well, as the operations to which they had been subjected so far tended to wrinkle the fabric and the fluffing only occurred at the crests of the wrinkles, so the effect was clearly insufficient. The rays were poorly down. Printed fabrics, especially those printed in dark shades, did not lend themselves well to the downing because the coloring paste blocked it. fiber so as to prevent easy fluffing.

   Soft knitted fabrics are also noticeably resistant to fluffing due to their softness, since the operations to which they have been subjected heretofore have tended to tear pieces of the knitted fabric rather than down.

   The object of the invention is to overcome all these difficulties and to give a downy or suede finish to all fabrics, some of which heretofore could not be downy in any way due to the above-mentioned difficulties; to impart a down finish to relatively thin fabrics, hard printed cretonne, canvas and soft knitted articles, to remove the harsh sheen of the fabrics of rayon or artificial silk and to impart a velvety softness to them; to give a showy cheap impression a rich and tender undertone; remove the coarse woody feel and substitute a soft velvety finish.

   Other aims of the invention are:
To produce an uninterrupted, dense and even down finish, without loose or isolated fibers, without being

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 necessary to carry out subsequent additional shearing;
To provide a rapid, substantially one-phase process in which the fabric is continuously moved during sizing unwinding from an unwind roll for sizing and winding after sizing onto an unwinding roll ;
To provide a process by which the downy hair can be laid down and held in a particular direction if desired;

To provide an operation whereby the surface fibers of the fabric can be mowed regardless of the direction of their coating, and this without weakening the fabric itself, in particular to avoid damaging the pieces of fabric. producing stripes in the fabric during downing where the fabric is excessively soft and weak; and
To provide a means of producing variations in the finish depending on the nature of the fabric and the effect desired.

   All these purposes come within the scope of the invention.

   In order to achieve these and other objects specified hereinafter, the invention provides a process for the woolening or downing of fabrics, which consists in subjecting the fabric to the action of a rotating abrasive cylinder, keeping the fabric in contact with the cylinder, during operation of the latter, by means of an underlying support against which the cylinder bears through the tissue, and dragging the fabric stretched, during the operation of the cylinder, in line with this cylinder and this underlying support, by means of a device independent of the operation of this cylinder, so as to stop the displacement that the cylinder tends to produce at the tissue during operation.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   The invention further relates to an apparatus, described below in more detail, which serves to carry out this method.

   It has already been proposed to use a machine in which the fabric is advanced on an elastic support and in which it is acted upon by means of an emerying or scraping cylinder.

  Any tension produced in the fabric during such an operation is due to the operation of the crumble or scraping cylinder which thereby acts to displace the fabric during the operation and to interfere with obtaining fine fluff. and perfect, given that the drive of the fabric stretched to the right of the emerying or scraping cylinder must be produced by a device independent of this cylinder.

   As will be explained in more detail hereinafter, the actual cutting of the surface fiber for the purpose of forming the down is effected by means of cylinders fitted with suitable elements serving to effect the cutting and depending. the fabric being treated and the effect you want to produce. The packing can be a strip of emery cloth, garnet or glass or, in other words, any suitable cutting abrasive. This abrasive web is wound helically over the cylinder so as to produce an unbroken surface with contiguous edges, and glued or otherwise attached to the cylinder. In other cases, depending on the fabric to be treated, it is possible to use a coating of metallic thread as in a woolen machine or a serrated metallic thread as in a card.

   The cylinders should be of a diameter such that they retain their shape and do not flex during the cutting operation. The cylinders, lined with abrasive or another cutting element, are rotated at a high speed, varying from 1,000 to 3,000 revolutions per minute, depending on the nature of the fabric subjected to the work and the effect that is to be produced. We bring the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 cylinders in contact with the surface of the fabric and, when engaged with it, cut the exposed surface of the yarn and thereby produce a pile or velvet effect on the fabric.

   Preferably, not a single cylinder is used, but a series of cylinders which all act simultaneously on the tissue. Preferably, four or six or even more cutting cylinders are employed, which follow each other fairly closely. The packing element or cutting element adapted on these cylinders can also vary according to the effect which is to be produced.

   The actual cutting operation would be inefficient if the fabric was not properly held during this operation. The rolls tend to displace tissue and form air pockets due to the high rotational speed of the rolls. The fabric should be retained in such a way that this displacement or the formation of air pockets is prevented. Proper retention of the fabric is achieved primarily by tensioning the fabric held tight over the surface of an elastic support or elastic support pad, and preferably by tensioning it over a curved support or curved support pad, in contact with which the fabric is constantly maintained.

   Further, the backing or backing pad should be soft and resilient enough that the cutting cylinders brought into contact with the fabric stretched over the backing or the backing pad form bites therein.

   Proper retention of the tissue is achieved primarily by pulling the tissue, held tight or taut, over the surface of a support or base, and preferably by pulling it over a curved support or base or convex, in contact with which the tissue is constantly maintained.

   The support or the surface of the support must be

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 soft and elastic so that the cutting cylinders, brought into contact with the fabric stretched on the support, form bites therein.

  As a result, the fabric is kept firmly clamped against the cutting faces of the rolls, and conversely, the rolls hold the fabric intimately against the support surface with a relatively large contact area, all of which helps to hold the fabric in place during cutting. .

   Preferably, the tissue is fed over a fixed or stationary support or base, in line with the cutting cylinders, during the cutting operation. This helps to keep the fabric taut and in place during cutting, due to the resistance that the friction against the backing opposes to the pulling of the fabric. This strength, although high, is not sufficient to damage the tissue by excessive elongation. The fabric is advanced at a speed of about three to eighteen meters per minute. This, however, depends to some extent on the nature of the tissue to be treated and the effect to be produced.

   In order to further assist in stopping movement of the tissue during cutting, and also to vary the direction of cut, a series or more series of cylinders are rotated in opposite directions, one in a clockwise direction. one watch, the others in reverse.

   One can also change the lining of the cylinders to produce the best effect, though. depends on the nature of the fabric treated and the end to be achieved. In some cases, the first cutting cylinder may have a coarser abrasive, or the cutting element may become thinner and thinner as the cylinders advance.

   After the cut, you can control the direction or the coating of the down or the hair, when you want to have a down

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 lying down, by brushing the down which has previously been subjected to the action of a jet of steam projected through the fabric, the brushing being produced by the last cylinder which can for this purpose be lined with bristles. While brushing the down, moisture from the water vapor, and heat sets the direction of the down.

   With certain dyed fabrics, certain thermal changes in the color of the dye can be produced by increasing the speed of the rolls and developing relatively large heat by friction. A speed of 2,000 rpm, together with a high friction abrasive, transforms an inexpensive seeing impression into a soft, rich and tender shade of a chosen appearance, and eliminates the touch and the feeling of unpleasant woody contact and coarse to replace them with a velvety soft touch.

   The cylinders cut with absolute precision, leaving an uninterrupted, dense and even down. Any loose or insulated fibers are cut without the need for additional trimming operations.

   The invention will be better understood with the aid of the accompanying drawings which show the apparatus serving to carry out the method and constituting an example of execution of the invention.

   In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the machine
Fig. 2 is a front view.

   Fig. 3 is a plan view
Fig. 4 is a section taken along line 4-4 of fig.3.

   Fig. 5 is a cross section showing the way in which the cylinders cooperate with the pad.

   Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan view of a variation of the tampon.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   Referring to the drawings, we see that:
The machine frame has spaced side legs 1, 1 to which corner posts 2, 2, 2, 2 are attached.

  These uprights are interconnected by side members 3, 3 and end spacers 4.4. On the uprights at the opposite ends of the machine are horizontally mounted top rails 5, 5. Each of these top rails is fixed by means of bolts 6 to the tops of the adjacent groups of posts. In the same horizontal plane as the upper cross members, but longitudinally with respect to the machine at the front and rear, are arranged beams 7, 7 fixed by means of bolts 8 to the corresponding cross members.

   On the beams 7,7, on the inner side of the sleepers 5, 5 is mounted a buffer holder 9. This buffer holder rests on the beams 7,7 and is prevented from moving by angles 10 fixed to the beams and to the door. -buffer.

   The pad holder has the general shape of a cylinder segment, its upper surface being convex. An elastic tampon 11 is placed on this convex upper surface and securely attached to the tampon holder. This pad is preferably made of a lower layer of sponge rubber 13 about 12 millimeters thick, on which lies a layer of felt 14 about 6 millimeters thick. The rubber is usually used alone. A canvas or fabric 15 having a surface which provides a substantial frictional resistance to the passage of the fabric over the fabric can be stretched over the pad, but this fabric is not essential. The tampon can be attached to the tampon holder in any suitable manner or it can simply be placed on top of it.

   The canvas or fabric is pulled taut and its ends secured in any suitable manner. The width of the pad is slightly more

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 greater than the width of the fabric to be subjected to the treatment, its edges not included, since it is sought that the edges of the fabric exceed the edges of the pad so as not to undergo the treatment.

   Rods 16, 16, 16, 16 are bolted to the ends of the crosspieces 5, 5, which have extensions projecting upwards. The protruding extensions of each rod are threaded. To the rods are fixed frames with main cylinders 17, 17, the position of which can be adjusted so as to approach them and move them away from the buffer by acting on the opposite ends of the machine. Each of these cylinder carrier frames is attached to adjacent rods by means of protruding lugs 18 which are slid up and down over the rods and then secured to the rods in any adjusted position by means of nuts 19 which are screwed onto the rods above and below the ears and with which the ears are engaged.

   Thus mounted, each cylinder-holder frame is adjustable as a block so that it can be approached and moved away from the buffer, and it can be fixed in any adjusted position.

   Each main cylinder frame 17 carries a series of spaced cylinders 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 disposed lengthwise above the surface of the pad. These cylinders are cutting cylinders and each of them is lined with a cutting coating, as explained above. However, the cylinder 25 may be a finishing cylinder lined with bristles.

  Each main roll frame has a general shape matching the convexity of the buffer; it comprises an upper plate 27 and a lower plate 28, and various side partitions 29, the assembly of which constitutes a series of cages 30 for the ends of the shafts 31 of the corresponding cylinders.

  In guides 32 formed in the sides 29 of these cages are

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 slidably mounted chairs 33 in which the ends of the shafts 31 of the cylinders are journalled, suitable ball bearings (not shown) being fitted in the chairs. Each cylinder is individually adjustable and capable of approaching or moving away from the buffer 12, and it is held in any adjustment position. To this end, the upper plate 27 is provided with adjusting bolts 34 screwed into the plate and bearing against the various chairs. Each bolt 34 is held in any adjustment position by a locking nut screwed onto it and tightening it against the plate. Likewise, the plate 28 comprises a series of bolts 36 which pass through it and which bear against the lower faces of the chairs.

   Each of these bolts is held in any adjustment position by a locking nut 37 which is screwed onto the bolt and bears against plate 28. In this way each cylinder is supported so as to be positively brought into engagement with the pad. and to be kept there in any adjustment position. It should also be observed that the inclination of the guides 32 relating to the various cages in which the roller chairs can slide follows the radii of the curve of the buffer, assuming that these radii are extended.

   Considering the various devices which control the movement of the fabric or fabric to be treated, it will be seen that 40 represents the unwinding roll on which the fabric to be treated is wound. This roller is mounted to rotate in the bifurcated ends 41 of consoles 42 bolted to the uprights 2, 2 at the front of the machine.

   From the unwinding roll the fabric goes from bottom to top to a tensioning device 43. This device comprises end pieces 44, 44 to which tension bars are attached.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 parallel spaced 45, 46, and the fabric passes first over the tension bar 45, then below the tension bar 46. The tension device is mounted on and between spaced plates 48,48 projecting forward front ends of the cross members 5, 5, and the plates are rigidly fixed to these cross members by equipping each plate with an angle 49 which is bolted to the end of the cross member.

   The tensioning device is attached to the plates 48, 48 so that it can rotate on them, and the angle of the tension bars is changed with the direction of the fabric advancement to increase or decrease the tension. . To this end, the end pieces 44, 44 of the tensioning device are provided with shafts which pass through bearings 51 of the plates 48, 48, in which they rotate.

  One of the shafts 50, extended beyond its bearing, carries a ratchet wheel 52 which is rotated by means of a hand wheel 55 and which is held in any angular position by a pawl 54 disposed on the shaft 55 connected to the adjacent plate 48, and by this means the tensioning device can be maintained in any adjustment position.

   After having passed around the tension bar 46, the fabric passes under the idler roller 56 mounted to rotate in bearings 57 of the plates 48, 48.

   From the idle roll the fabric advances from bottom to top to pass over a deflector roll 58 which operates to spread the fabric just before it engages the buffer. The deflector roller 58 is carried by a shaft 59 mounted to rotate in bearings 60 of the plates 48, 48.

   From the deflector roll 58 the fabric passes over the buffer and under the cutting cylinders.

   After leaving the pad at the rear of the machine, the fabric passes under a roller 62 rotating in the direction

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 of the arrow indicated on it. The shaft 63 of this roller is journalled in arms 64, 64 forming a bracket, each of which comprises an angle bar 65, and these angles are bolted respectively to the rear ends of the sleepers 5, 5.

   From the roll 62 the fabric passes from bottom to top over a roll 66 rotating in the direction of the arrow indicated on it.

  The shaft 67 of this roller is journaled in and between the arms 64, 64 forming a console.

   From roll 66 the fabric passes over a take-up roll 70 rotating in the direction of the arrow indicated on it.

  The shaft 71 of this roller rotates in guides 72, 72 hollowed out in the inner faces of the console arms 64, 64. The rollers 62 and 66 are driven rollers, as will be explained in more detail below. -after s. However, the take-up roller 70 is driven as a result of its frictional contact with the roller 65, so that as its diameter increases as the fabric is wound on this roller, the ends of its shaft 71 move along guides 72, 72 in which they are mounted, thereby allowing the diameter of the roll to increase.

   Reference will be made below to the mechanism used to actuate the various parts of the machine. The cutting cylinders are controlled by electric motors 75, 75. These electric motors are mounted on an aerial platform 76 rigidly fixed by an assembly of intermediate profiles 77 on the upper plates 27 of the main cylinder carrier frames 17 , 17 so that they are movable with the cylinder-carrying frames. Each engine drives three cylinders. The shafts 31 of the cylinders, extended beyond the chairs 33 in which they are journaled, are provided with pulleys 78 which are connected by transmission belts 79 to pulleys

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 80 wedged on the shafts 81 of the respective engines.

   The arrangement is such that each engine drives the group of cylinders, to which it is connected by the belts, in the opposite direction to that of the cylinders driven by the other engine, a group of cylinders rotating in the direction of needles one watch and the other in reverse. The motors are variable speed motors, so that the rotational speed of the cylinders can be varied as needed.

   On a frame 85 connected to the end spacer 4 of the machine is mounted a variable speed motor 86, the shaft 87 of which is connected by a suitable coupling 88 to a shaft 89 journalled in a bearing 90 of the. end of the frame 85 on which the motor is mounted. The end of the shaft 89, projecting beyond its bearing, carries pulleys 91, 92. The pulley 91 is connected by a belt 93 to the deflector roller 58 to drive this roller in the opposite direction to the direction of advance. - ing of the fabric while the machine is in operation.

   The pulley 92 is connected by a belt 94 to a pulley 95 of the end of the shaft 63 of the roller 62 to turn this roller: The opposite end of the shaft 63, extended beyond its bearing, comprises a pinion 96 meshing with a pinion 97 of the projecting end of the shaft 67 of the roller 66, the two rollers 62 and 66 thus being positively driven by the motor 86.

   The general operation takes place as follows: ggras having passed the fabric between the various rollers and cylinders and on the surface of the pad, as indicated above, the frames with main cylinders are lowered, using their components. adjustment, until all the cylinders are positioned correctly in relation to the fabric stretched over the pad, then the frames are fixed in the position

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 adjustment thus obtained.

   The position of each cylinder is then adjusted separately by lowering each cylinder with sufficient force to produce bites in the tampon, so that the tissue contained in these bites has relatively extensive intimate contact with the tampon where it is subjected to pressure. the cutting action of the cylinder during machine operation. The intensity of the force with which any cylinder is pressed from top to bottom depends to some extent on the fabric to be worked and the effect one wishes to produce.

   The function of the driven rollers 62 and 66 and the take-up roll 70 is to pull the fabric over the pad surface during the operation of the cutting rollers. The tension exerted on the fabric is retarded by the tensioning device 43 and the deflector roller 58, and therefore the fabric is tight against the convex surface of the tampon.

   The shape and construction of the elastic pad can be varied within wide limits, the only essential consideration, however, is that each cylinder be provided with an elastic pad surface against which it applies the fabric during the fluffing operation. In fig. 6 is shown an alternative construction of the tampon, in which instead of being continuous and covering the entire upper surface of the tampon holder, the tampon is made of spaced sections 99 arranged in the direction of the fabric feed. .

  With such a pad, the cutting cylinders act only at the points in contact with the pads, so that the fabric is finished with alternating down and non-down bands.

  In some cases it is advantageous that the down or @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 hair is brushed and lying. This effect can be produced by covering one of the cylinders, or cylinder 25, with a blanket of bristles or brush and subjecting the fabric to the action of live steam which is introduced into a steam jacket. not shown which is located below the pad and where the vapor passes through the pad into the fabric just ahead of the brush. Preferably, the steam is introduced at a pressure of about 8 atmospheres.

   Preferably, several cutting cylinders are employed for the reason that, although the fluffing could also be effected with a single cylinder, it would however be generally impractical in comparison with fluffing operated with the aid of a single cylinder. several cylinders, since one would then be obliged to advance the fabric at a rate all the slower than that at which it would advance if one employed a certain number of cutting cylinders all operating simultaneously. A large number of cutting cylinders still have the added advantage of completely eliminating any imperfections that might occur during operation.

   The frictional heat developed by rotating the cutting cylinders at high speed causes color changes in the dye.

   Different abrasives produce different sizes.

   By varying the direction of rotation, the pressure up and down and the speed of the rolls, the primer is also changed. As explained above, the rolls are lowered to exert up and down pressure to help hold the fabric as it moves over the support during the cutting operation. In addition, the pressure exerted by all the cylinders should be as equal as possible, and this can be determined by interposing between the tissue and each cylinder -

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

 a steel dynamometer. After this additional adjustment of the rolls, necessary to obtain a determined finish, an examination of the fabric is carried out.

   If a cut sufficient to produce the desired app is found not to have been obtained, the pressure on the cylinders is increased by adjusting the position of the main cylinder frames so that all cylinders can be lowered. at a time. Care must be taken to avoid too much pressure which, instead of intensifying the cut, could have the effect of a kind of crushing, or even slicing the tissue, but this danger is reduced thanks to the nature of the tampon .

   The term "convex" as used in the present description and in the claims and applied to the shape of the tampon is used in the broad sense meaning any convex surface regardless of whether it is perfectly spherical or simply curved.
