<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

NEW BICYCLE BRAKE COUNTERPEDAL BAR CONTROL SYSTEM.
The present invention relates to a system for controlling the bicycle brake by counter-pedaling, which does not require a special pedal bracket for its production.
It can therefore be mounted without any difficulty on bicycles of current construction.
This control system essentially comprises a lever pivotally mounted on the frame of the bicycle near the pedal bracket; this lever is connected to the braking device (rim brake, drum brake, etc.) and present towards its lower end. a spring loaded protrusion, the profile of which is such that it disappears under the pressure of one of the pedals in the direction of travel of the bicycle and serves as a stop for said pedal in the opposite direction. back-pedaling, the cyclist presses the considered pedal against the control lever and consequently forces the latter to pivot, causing the braking device to come into action.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The method of mounting the pivoting lever on the frame of the bicycle, as well as the method of linking this lever with the braking device, obviously depend on the nature of the latter; they must generally ensure the braking of the wheel. rear, and possibly of the front wheel and even of the two wheels at the same time, thanks to the displacement of the pivoting lever under the action of one of the pedals or of a member integral with the latter.
Among the many possible embodiments of this new control system, the drawing appended to this specification shows, by way of example and not limitation, some particularly practical applications.
Fig.I and 2 relate to a first embodiment and give respectively an elevational view and a plan view.
Fig. 3 shows a plan of a second embodiment.
Fig.4 and 5 show respectively from the front and in profile the pivoting lever controlling a drum brake.
Fig.6 is a plan view of the base plate of the pivot lever support.
Fig. 7 and 8 are respectively a front and side view of an alternative construction of the pivoting lever.
Figs. 9 and 10 relate to an embodiment of the control system with cable transmission for rim brake mounted on the rear fork; they respectively give a partial view of the mode of connection between the pivoting lever and the brake device and a front view of the latter.
On the horizontal fork I of the rear wheel 2 of the bicycle, near the bottom bracket 3 is provided a support consisting of an upper plate 4a and a lower plate 4b, held together on either side of the fork I by a bolt 5 passing between the two tubes
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of it.
The upper plate 4a came with a socket 6, in which can pivot an axis 7 carried perpendicularly to the upper end of a metal part in the form of a lever 8 vertically passing through a guide and stop groove 4c provided in the plate. lower 4b of the support.
Towards its lower part, the lever 8 carries a busselure 9, in which can slide a rod II subjected to the action of a spring 10 pressing against the bottom of the bush. This rod II after having passed through the lever 8 ends in a substantially perpendicular arm 12, which protrudes beyond the lever 8 (Fig. 4 and 5). This arm 12 has an inclined extension 13 towards the front, of which the lateral surface has a gently sloping profile 13a, the apex of which forms the end of the rod II. A screw 16 passing through the lever 8 and fixed to the arm 12 is intended to guide the rod II while limiting its movement.
Between the axis 7 and the nozzle 9, the lever 8 carries a pivot 14, which serves as a connecting axis with the braking device of the rear wheel, whether it is a rim brake or a drum brake, or any other brake system.
When the pedal 15 disposed on the side of the lever 8, rotates in the direction of the arrow X, that is to say in the direction of advance, it comes at a given moment in contact with the base of the inclined plane I3a of the arm 12 and by acting on this inclined plane forces the arm 12 and consequently its rod II to retract by returning inside the nozzle 9 where it compresses the spring 10. The pedal can thus freely pass in the direction of the arrow X (Fig.I).
On the other hand, if the pedal 15 is rotated in the opposite direction, that is to say that of the arrow Y, its lower part will abut against the rod II and its arm 12, and it will consequently cause the lever 8 in its rotational movement. .The movement or pivoting of lever 8,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
which slides in the groove 4c of the lower plate 4a, is limited, as has been said, by the stop of the lever against the bottom of this groove. By moving the lever 8 acts, by its pivot 14, on the braking, which comes into action and brakes the rear wheel 2. As soon as the cyclist stops pressing the pedal 15, the lever 8 is returned to its neutral position by the spring specific to the braking device itself.
In the alternative construction of the pivoting lever 3 shown in Figures 7 and 8, the rod II is replaced by a tab IIt capable of pivoting in a notch 17, provided in the lever 8 and around an axis 18 passing through this notch. A leaf spring or an elastic wire 10 'hooked at one end in the lever 8 presses on the other hand against the tab II' so as to project the arm 12 'with the inclined plane 13a of its extension 13.
As has been said, the mode of connection between the lever 8 and the braking device proper depends on the construction of the latter. In the case of FIG. I, the pivot 14 of the lever 8 fits into a socket 19 fitted with an arm 20 fixed to the yoke 21 carrying the brake blocks 22. The return spring 23 is connected on the one hand to the arm 20 and on the other hand to a fixed rod 24.
In the case where the braking device is constituted by two half-calipers 25a and 25b, (Fig. 3), one of the calipers carries a rod 26, the free end of which is hooked to the pivot 14 of the lever 8. lever 8 is returned by the usual spring 27 connecting the two half-calipers. A screw 28 passing through a lug integral with a half-caliper makes it possible to adjust the braking power of one of the jaws by its stop against the lower plate . 4b.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In the case where the braking of the rear wheel is effected by means of a brake drum, on the rod which normally controls the movements of the brake shoes, is articulated a rod 29 which hooks to the pivot 14 of the brake shoe. lever 8, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
In the same vein, one can use a sheathless cable transmission to actuate a rim brake mounted on the rear fork. In this case the cable 30 connected to the pivot 14 of the lever 8 (Fig. 9 and 10) passes over a grooved pulley 32 fixed near the tab 33 of the rear moult and, along the rear fork 34, bypasses a second pulley groove 35 carried by one of the jaws 36 of the brake to be attached by a cable retainer 38 to the other jaw 37. Any movement of the lever 8 under the action of the pedal in the Y direction will cause, as above, the actuation of the brake, the return of the lever 8 after braking being obtained by the action of the spring 39.
This control system makes it possible to simultaneously brake the two wheels of the bicycle. It will suffice, for example, to extend the cable 30 to bring it to the fork crown, where it can act in a known manner on a rim brake device. It would also be possible to extend the lever 8 above its pivot point on the frame, so as to control by the upper part of this lever a brake device on the front wheel, while the rear brake device will be controlled as before from the pivot 14 arranged under the pivot point of the lever 8.
