EMI1.1

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

On l'a ensuite ex- trait à l'acétone.
@
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Process for the production of aromatic isothiocyanates.
From aromatic amines, it is formed by means of carbon disulphide and by simultaneously causing aryldithiocarbaminate bases to act according to the following equation:
EMI1.1
R-: NH2 + CS2 + IVe (3F ± = R-NH-C = S + I20 -S-Me 2 For example, using ammonia, the ammonium salts of the corresponding dithiocarbaminacids are formed. .
It is also known that, in particular, the salts of heavy metals of dithiocarbaminacids are converted, by forming heavy metal sulfides, into the corresponding mustard oils or senevols. The reaction can be carried out by converting the light metal salts of dithiocarbaminacidae with heavy metal salts. From the literature- @

The lead salt of the dithiocarbaminacid which formed first is not isolated when the transformation is carried out, but is left for subsequent decomposition according to the above equation. If this conversion is carried out with aniline dithiocarbaminate, up to 76% of the theoretical yield of phenylsenevol is obtained. This transformation takes place in a significantly less favorable manner with most of the other aromatic dithiocarbaminates, as shown in the table below taken from the literature: Yields of aromatic senevol during the transformation of dithioc & rbaminate by means of lead nitrate.

Transformation with other salts of heavy metals such as copper, zinc and iron with aniline di-thiocarbaminate also gives phen @ l senevol, however the yields are, in the 'together, lower than those obtained in the case of transformation with lead salts.
In particular, the transformation with ferrosulphate gives only quite insignificant yields of phenylsénévol.
For the substituted aromatic senevols, it was, from what was known as indicated above, absolutely doubtful that transformation with ferrosulphate could still give amounts of these bodies which could be isolated.
In accordance with the present invention, it has been observed
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Surprisingly, the above reaction equation is not, or in any case is not exclusively, critical for the formation of the escapes. On the contrary, in the course of the transformation, an oxidation process must take place, and the formation of senevol is determined essentially by whether this reaction is carried out exactly.
The oxidation which can take place during or after the transformation of the salts of heavy metals by the dithiocarbaminates can be carried out in various ways - for example, the wet or dry predipitates can be subjected to oxidation by air. a dithiocarbaminate of a heavy metal or, one can add oxidants such as for example hydrogen peroxide before, during or after their formation, optionally, one can use, for the transformation, salts of heavy metals which can exert an oxidizing effect themselves. It has furthermore been found that it is preferable to have for the transformations a determined concentration of hydrogen ions.
This is a little different depending on the nature of the amine used and of the heavy metal used for the transformation, it is however included between the limits of pH 1.5 to 7.
According to data from the literature, the conversion of copper salts and in particular of lead salts by di-thiocarbaminates is particularly suitable for obtaining it. of. se- nevol. If the indications described above are used, it is possible to replace the expensive salts of lead and copper by inexpensive heavy metal salts, such as for example those of iron Contrary to the indications in the literature, it is found that these are even particularly favorable. Advantageously, ferric salts are also used for the conversion, which at the same time exert the necessary oxidizing action.
For example, converting aniline dithiocarbaminate with ferric salts at least the same yields as those obtained by converting with lead salts.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
It has been found that the process according to the invention was particularly advantageous for obtaining senevols which, according to the usual lead process, are only obtained with very poor yields. Thus, p-phenylenedi-senevol is obtained according to the old lead process, with a yield of about 10%, with the lead method using the above prescriptions, with a yield of about 45%. % and with the iron salt method. with a yield of about 70%.
The technical progress obtained in accordance with the invention consists in that it is now possible to obtain, for the first time, in particular the substituted aromatic senevols, so cheaply that their use can be envisaged. industrial. Due to the strong insecticidal action of aromatic senevols, they can be used, for example, as insecticides.
EXAMPLES: 1. - 30 gr. Were subjected to transformation, with stirring. of [alpha] -naphthylamine with 17 gr. of carbon disulphide and 50 cc of concentrated ammonia. The carbaminate suspended in 400 cc of water was introduced into a solution of 70 gr. of lead nitrate, after which 40 gr. chalk powder and left to stand for a long time. After the liquid was sucked up, crushing was effected and left in air for a long time for oxidation to take place. The dried material was extracted with acetone until exhaustion. We obtained 39 gr. of extract from which was removed by boiling with petroleum ether, 32 gr. of senévol. Melting point 52-54. Yield 80% of the theoretical yield.
2.- It was converted, as above, to give the dithiocarbaminate, 30 gr. of industrial [alpha] -naphthylamine with 17 gr. of carbon disulphide and 50 cc of concentrated ammonia. The solution of dithiocarbaminate in 5 liters of water was stirred.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
so much, in a mixture of 120 gr. of ferric chloride and 4 liters of water. The friable precipitate which formed was filtered off with suction and air dried. It was then extracted with acetone. The extract gave by boiling with petroleum ether, senevol which was still contaminated with small amounts of sulfur. After separation thereof, yields of 76% relative to the theoretical yield were obtained.
As an incidental product of the manufacture, a colorless body was obtained which is characterized by its low solubility in petroleum ether and in acetone and which melts at 189.
3. - As above, the. dithiocarbaminate from 33 gr. of p-phenylenediamine, 57 gr. of carbon disulphide and 100 cc of concentrated ammonia. This dithiocarbaminate, placed in solution, was passed through a mixture of 350 g. of ferrous sulfate, 70 gr. of caustic soda and water.
Conversely, the iron mixture can also be added to the dithiocarbaminate solution. The black-brown precipitate was filtered off with suction and strongly compressed. The crushed mass was then dried at room temperature. In the oxidation which occurs during drying, the temperature of the dried material should not substantially exceed room temperature. The pH of the mixture of ferrous sulphate, sodium hydroxide and water had, before and after the conversion with the carbaminate, a value of about 6.3. It was extracted with exhaustion acetone; optionally, the extracted product is once again allowed to oxidize in air, then it is extracted again.
As in Example 2, isolated senevol containing no sulfur was obtained with a yield of 48 to 52% relative to the theoretical yield. If the oxidation of the iron precipitate is prevented by extracting it with acetone containing no air, while it is still humid, only minimal yields of senevol are obtained.
@
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
4. - The dithiocarbaminate of p-phenylenediamine was produced and transformed, as in Example 3. The suction filtered precipitate was pulped with 600 cc of 2n hydrochloric acid and 1000 cc of 3% hydrogen peroxide added. After standing for a long time, filtering off with suction and drying the residual precipitate, this was worked up as in Example 3. The yields of pure senevol were 55-60% of the theoretical yield.
5. - The dithiocarbaminate was made, as indicated above, from 33 gr. of p-phenylenediamine. The solution of this body was allowed to arrive gradually in a solution of 350 g. of ferric chloride (pH about 2), the precipitate, which contained little iron, was filtered off with suction and dried. Extraction of senevol, as indicated above, gave it in 66-70% yield. In the filtrate obtained after transformation, the iron is, for the most part, present in the byvalent state; with the aid of an oxidant, for example chlorine, it can be reduced to the trivalent state. After having established the exact concentration of hydrogen ions, we can then reuse the solution to produce senevol.
6.- From 33 gr. of m-phenylenediamine, the dithiocarbaminate was prepared as in Example 3. The solution of this body was passed through a solution of 250 gr. of ferric chloride in water. The friable precipitate was extracted with acetone after suction filtering and drying, which in the present case took place particularly quickly. We worked the senévol as in Example 3.
Yields of m-phenylenedisenevol amounting to 65% of the theoretical yield were obtained.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
7. - From 28 gr. of aniline, 25 gr. Of carbon disulphide and 60 cc of concentrated ammonia, the di-thiocarbaminate was prepared. This was transformed as above with a solution of 180 gr. of ferric chloride in water.
The resinous mass which precipitated was dissolved in ether and the latter was evaporated. The black-brown solution obtained first became clear on standing, with separation of ferric hydroxide and oxidation, to become a light yellow. The ether residue gave, by steam distillation, phenyl senevol in 72% yield based on theoretical yield.
8.- As in Example 7, it was produced from 28 gr. of aniline, dithiocarbaminate and converted to ferric chloride mpyen. The precipitate was then taken up in acetone and hydrogen peroxide was added dropwise to the dark brown solution in acetone until this solution became red yellow. The acetone was then evaporated and distilled with water vapor. A yield of 70% relative to the theoretical yield was obtained.
9.- We introduced the dithiocarbaminate from 28 gr. aniline in the form of dissolution or suspension, in a solution of 180 gr. of ferric chloride to which had been added immediately before processing 200 cc of 6% hydrogen peroxide. The product was worked up, after removal of the aqueous layer, by immediate steam distillation of the oily residue.
The yield was 72% of the theoretical yield. If the same test is carried out without the prior addition of oxygenated water, only a yield of about 25% is obtained.
10.- It was transformed, as in Example 1, to obtain dithiocarbaminate, 30 gr. of [alpha] -naphthylamine, 17 gr. of carbon disulphide and 25 cc of concentrated ammonia. It was then taken up in 35% water and filtered off from the insoluble matter.

fads (dinaphthylthiourea). Into the filtrate was introduced and stirred at room temperature, a solution of 23 g. of FeC13, 6HO, in 500 cc of water. The precipitate was filtered off with suction, coarsely ground and left in the air for 2-4 days to dry and oxidize. The product, which had then turned yellow-brown, was exhaustively extracted with carbon tetachloride in a cold extractor.
Optionally, the sulfur entrained in solution can be separated by means of acetone? Yields of senevol were 82-86%.
11. The dithiocarbaminate was prepared and taken up as in Example 10. Into the aqueous solution of this body, a solution of 31 g was introduced, optionally while cooling with ice. of ferrosulphate crystallized in 500 cc of water, with vigorous stirring. After testing to determine if the precipitation was complete, it was filtered off with suction and dried as in Example 10. The precipitate very quickly turned light brown by oxidation. After two days, the product was mixed with about 5 cc. cold industrial hydrochloric acid, diluted with water after a few hours and filtered by suction. After drying, the light gray to light brown powder was distilled off under a pressure of about 1 mm.
After separation of the sulfur which had passed with it, sevol was obtained in a yield of 85 to 89%.
The aqueous suspension, the pH of which should be about 7, can be further oxidized, after the addition of ferrous sulphate, by stirring with air or oxygen. After the theoretically necessary amounts of oxygen have been absorbed, the precipitate which is now light brown is filtered off with suction, immediately kneaded with concentrated hydrochloric acid and allowed to stand for a few hours. As above, the washed and dried residue can be vacuum distilled or else it can be extracted exhaustively with carbon tetrachloride.

12.- As in Example 6, m-phenylenediamine dithiocarbaminate was prepared. In the solution of this body, was introduced with stirring, preferably at a temperature of 0, a solution of 243 g FeCl3, 6H2O so that the addition of the first third takes place quickly and that of the remainder slowly.
Stirred until the solution turned colorless and filtered with suction. The precipitate was dried and oxidized for one or two days in thin layers. The chocolate brown mass was mixed with about 80 cc of concentrated hydrochloric acid, diluted with water for a few hours and filtered off with suction. The dried residue was extracted with cold carbon tetrachloride. After separation of sulfur and a small impurity insoluble in petroleum ether, senevol was obtained with a yield of 75 to 85% based on theory.
13. The dithiocarbaminate was made by stirring from 28.8 gr. of p-phenetidine, 25 cc of ammonia, 25%, and 18 gr. of carbon disulphide. The next day, the solid mass was taken up with 500 cc of lukewarm water and about 0.5 to 1 g remained. of di-phenetidyl-thiourea. The solution was mixed with ice, then a 62.5 g solution was introduced with stirring. of ferrous sulfate. Suction filtered and allowed to air until the mass turned light yellow. Worked as in Example 10 or 11 and an almost colorless crystalline phenetidylene senevol was obtained in a yield of 84-86% based on theory.
14. - Manufacture of dithiocarbaminate from 39 gr. of aniline, 50 cc of 25% ammonia and 40 gr. carbon sulphide. After one day, the solid mass was dissolved in about 800 cc of water and only traces of diphenylthiourea remained.
From this solution, aniline substantially unconverted with small amounts of diphenylthiourea can be removed by stirring with an organic solvent. The ice-cold aqueous solution is transformed, as in the previous example, by means of a solution of 67.5 g of ferrous sulfate. The reaction mixture is stirred in @

a stirrer, by introducing gaseous oxygen until no more oxygen absorption takes place. The pH of the suspension is adjusted, preferably beforehand, to about 7, for example by adding sodium phosphate. After completion of the oxidation it is acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid and distilled with water vapor. A yield of phenylsenevol of 90 to 94% of theory is obtained.
