<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"IMPROVEMENTS TO APPLIANCES SERVING TO APPLY MARQUAS, INSCRIPTIONS OR STARS FOR DECORATION ON THE SURFACES OF OBJECTS- @ This invention relates to devices used to affix marks, inscriptions or other decorative patterns on the surfaces of various objects, such as bottles and the like, having a cylindrical body, it also relates particularly to an adaptation of the stencils process.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide an improved device for supporting and effecting relative movement between bottles or the like containers and the screen through which colorant is discharged in order to apply marks or
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
decorative patterns on the bottles, etc.
A further object of the invention is to improve and generally simplify the mechanism used in apparatus of the above type.
According to the invention, the apparatus comprises a sieve which, during operation, is intended to be moved horizontally with respect to an object to be treated maintained in rolling contact with the underside of said sieve, means for imparting movement. oscillating said object in synchronism with the movement of the sieve and a scraper (or similar member) intended to cooperate with the sieve and to force a colorant through it.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the apparatus comprises a sieve with horizontal reciprocating movement, a device capable of imparting such a movement to said sieve, a rotary mandrel intended to support the body to be treated in a position horizontal or lying below the screen and in rolling contact with it, and the means by which the reciprocating movement of the screen provides an oscillating movement of the mandrel, a member such as a squeegee for pushing back a dye through the sieve for application to the body to be treated and a unique device for controlling the operation of the sieve.
To better understand the invention and facilitate its practice, it will be described below in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of an apparatus established according to the invention.
Fig. 2 / is a plan view,
The f ig. 3 is a transverse and vertical section taken on the line III-III of FIG. 2, some parts being shown in elevation.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the apparatus.

Fig. 5 represents, seen from the side. a manually operated distributor communicating its reciprocating motion to the screen frame.
Fig. 6 is a similar view looking at the side opposite to FIG. 5.
The f ig. 7 is a section on line VII-VII of fig 6.
Fig. 8 shows the device used to supply and adjust the quantity of pressurized air admitted to the motor serving to communicate its back and forth movement to the screen frame.
Generally, the apparatus comprises a rotating mandrel for supporting a bottle or similar container in a supine or horizontal position below a screen through which the colorant is discharged and applied to the bottle during rotation. of this and the horizontal movement of the sieve. The screen as well as, of course, its support frame perform a horizontal reciprocating movement relative to the bottle or other container under the control of an air-operated piston motor. The operation of both the piston motor and the bottle clamping mandrel and, governed by means of a single manually operated device, for example a pedal of the type shown.
The embodiment shown in the drawings comprises a base mounted on wheels 10, carrying a platform or table 11 which is intended to support frames 12 serving to support the mandrel 13 which carries the bottle and parts directly associated with this mandrel. as will be described below in more detail. These frames 12 have substantially the shape of a U turned upside down in side view (Fig. 1) and include, at their ends
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
inside two vertical slides 14 which are spaced from one another in the length direction of the platform 11 and intended to receive a slide 15 on which the mandrel 13 of the bottle is mounted.
An adjusting screw 16, provided with a handwheel 17 at its lower end. constitutes a device making it possible to vary the height of the mandrel to compensate for the variations in diameter of the bottles or other objects being decorated.
The mandrel 13 (Fig. 3) is composed of sleeves, one inside 18 the other outside 19, respectively secured to a support 20, the inside sleeve 18 being tapered to fit over the neck of a bottle and being provided, at its outer end, with a sealing ring 21 intended to come into tight contact with the shoulder part of the bottle to ensure the vacuum tightness * The two sockets of the mandrel are screwed into the support 20, and as will readily be understood, the air is intended to be drawn out of the inner sleeve to enable the bottle to be firmly secured to the mandrel.
In order to thus empty the sleeve 18 of the air it contains, an axial opening 22 is provided in a horizontal shaft 23 which rotates in bearings 24 provided at the upper end of the slide 15, this shaft being screwed on by one of its ends in the support 20 and carrying, at its other end, a grooved drum or pulley 25. The duct 22 of the shaft 23 opens, at its inner end, into an annular groove 26 made in a fixed sleeve 27 which surrounds a part of the shaft between the bearings 24.
A feed pipe 28 f communicates this annular groove or duct 26 with a vacuum tank 28 '(Fig. 1) by means of a manually operated valve or distributor 30 with the aid of which the application of vacuum to the mandrel is regulated, A pedal 31 is mechanically connected to the distributor 30 by
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
a rod 32. A coil spring 33 normally maintains the distributor 30 in the desired position to cut off the communication between the mandrel 13 and the vacuum reservoir 28 @.
A sieve frame 34 carrying a sieve 34a is secured to two horizontal arms 35 and disposed immediately above the position occupied by the bottle B (FIG. 3) which it is proposed to decorate, this frame being, in this case. case, consisting of two longitudinal bars 36 (fig.2) interconnected by end bars 37. The arms 35 which directly support the screen extend from one., from the sides of a carriage 38 mounted for move horizontally in the direction of the length of the platform 11, in horizontal slides 39, the latter being provided at the upper part of the frames 12. Stops provided near the opposite ends of the slides 39 limit the back and forth movement - comes from cart 38.
To deliver the colorant through the sieve 34a, a squeegee 41 or an equivalent rubbing or pressing member is provided at the lower end of an arm 42 (fig. 3 and 4) mounted in an adjustable manner on a horizontal bar 43. This bar 43 is fixed by its inner end to an oscillating support 44 which is pivotally assembled by means of a hinge pin 45, with the frames 12. To oscillate the support 44 in order to reverse the position inclined with the squeegee 41, two cams 46 (fig. 1, 2 and 3) are used, mounted on the catiot 38. spaced from one another and occupying positions such that they can cooperate with the horizontal bar 43 at the opposite ends of the reciprocating stroke of said carriage.
As is evident from the particular contour given to the cams 46, these cams have the effect of lifting the squeegee 41 a short distance above and away from the screen during the overturning of the screen.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
said squeegee = so that the dye can be distributed evenly over the sieve. To help the cams 46 to reverse the squeegee, a fixed cam 47 mounted on the frames 12 has two inclined rectilinear surfaces which come into contact with the horizontal bar 43 carrying the squeegee.
This bar moves from one to the other of said inclined surfaces at each of the ends of the reciprocating movement of the carriage 38 and thus ensures the reversal of the angular position of the squeegee.
The synchronism of the back and forth movement of the screen frame and of the oscillation of the bottle B around its longitudinal axis is ensured by providing a driving transmission between the carriage 38 and the pulley 25 which, as well as 'said above is part of the chuck assembly. For this purpose, on the pulley 25 (FIG. 2), is wound a rope 48 suitably fixed by its opposite ends to the arms 49 of the carriage 38. It can thus be seen that, in its back and forth movement, the carriage 38 acting through the rope 48 oscillates the pulley 25. A corresponding oscillating movement is thus communicated to the mandrel 13 and to the bottle B which it supports.
The reciprocating movement of the carriage 38 is obtained with the aid of a piston motor 50 (FIG. 8) actuated by fluid, this motor being mounted on the table 11, and fixed to the latter. ci by fasteners 51, (fig. 2.) The piston rod 52 is connected by an arm 53 to the carriage 38. Pressurized air is admitted to the opposite ends of the cylinder 54 of the engine by connection pipes 55, the diameter of which is a little smaller than that of the main supply pipe 56 by which the engine is connected to a pressurized air tank 57. The air arrives through a pipe 58 on which a check valve 59 is mounted and a regulator 60.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
A manometer 61 is connected to one of the branch pipes 55.
Normally, an equal and constant pressure is maintained at both ends of the cylinder 54 due to the direct communication between this cylinder and the pressurized air reservoir 57. The movement of the piston 62 is effected by reducing the pressure prevailing at both. opposite ends of the cylinder., in an alternating fashion. For this purpose, the branch pipes 55 are connected by pipes 63 to a distributor 54 (fig. 5 to 8 inclusive) * This distributor 64 comprises a rotor 65, (fig. 7), arranged inside a housing 66 and carried by a shaft 67 to the outer end of which is secured a latching mechanism 68 serving to maintain the shaft and the rotor in any desired adjusted position.
The shaft and the rotor are driven in a rotational movement (which is intermittent for a purpose which will emerge from what follows) by means of a device comprising a ratchet wheel 69 pinned to the shaft 67 and a pawl 70 (fig.6) intended to engage with the ratchet and carried by a lever 71. This lever 71 is connected by a rod 73 to the pedal 31 ,, (fig.4), which was discussed previously.
The rotor 65 has four holes 73 (fig.5), located at points equidistant from the rotor ,, near its periphery ,, these holes being parallel to the axis of said rotor. The holes 73 are intended to be brought into coincidence, one at a time, with exhaust ports 74 communicating with exhaust pipes 75.
The exhaust ports 74 are spaced 135 apart from each other and are arranged directly opposite the points of communication between the housing 66 and the pipes 63 (Fig.7).
In this way, it is evident that the coincidence of one of the holes 73 with one or the other of the exhaust ports 74 has the effect of producing an immediate drop in pressure.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
prevailing in that of the ends of the cylinder which communicates directly with the intended exhaust port 74. Therefore, the piston 62 moves towards that of the ends of the cylinder which is exhausted.
Due to the difference in capacity of the main supply pipe 56 and the branch pipes 55, the communication of either of the latter with the outside air through one of the ports The exhaust 74 has the effect of reducing the pressure prevailing in one end of the cylinder relative to that prevailing in the other end. This mode of action emerges clearly from FIG. 8.
In operation, a bottle is placed in the mandrel 13, as is particularly indicated in FIGS. 3 and 4. Immediately afterwards, the pedal 31 is lowered, which has the effect of exerting a suction or vacuum in the mandrel and, by this means, to firmly fix the bottle inside this mandrel. At the same time as this is taking place, the rotor 65 moves 45 around its axis and brings one of the holes 73 opposite one of the exhaust ports 74. We have this. said previously, this has the effect of causing the piston 62 to move as far as one of the ends of the cylinder 54, thus causing the screen 34a to move. Due to the driving connection between the screen frame and the pulley 25, through the rope 48, the mandrel oscillates in synchronism with the reciprocating movement of the screen frame.
The squeegee or friction member operates as usual so as to. pushing the colorant through the sieve at the appropriate points, so that said colorant is applied to the bottle. At the end of a decorating operation, another bottle is placed in the mandrel, the sieve, mandrel and squeegee then work in the opposite direction.
