Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

       etc... L'opération peut être effectuée en brassant énergiquement le métal fondu et les crasses avec l'alcali caustique fondu et en injectant un oxydant gazeux préalablement chauffé dans l'appareil de traitement, la température optimum étant légèrement supérieure au. point de fusion du métal à affiner.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Process improves the refining of metals with relatively low melting point, and, in particular, of lead and the simultaneous treatment of oxides, dross, residues, etc., of these metals.
The invention relates to the refining of metals of relatively low melting point, in admixture with their oxides and, in particular, to the refining of lead in admixture with dross, oxides, residues, etc. ; it also includes -the method of separating the various

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 constituents.

   In the process ordinarily used for the preparation of soft lead, air or the mixture of air and steam at a suitable temperature oxidizes arsenic, tin, antimony, etc., preferably with lead; however, due to prolonged exposure to air of the surface of the metal bath, a significant amount of lead is also oxidized.

   We know on the other hand that, if the surface of the bath is preserved from the action of air by a layer of molten caustic alkali (sodium hydroxide for example) and if we inject into the mass In refining the gaseous oxidant to a suitable temperature, the lead remains practically stainless, while the oxides of the impurities combine with the alkali. The amount of gaseous oxidant can be adjusted so as to allow the gradual elimination of impurities, without oxidation of the lead.

   Now, it has been observed that, if one mixes and vigorously mixes dross, oxides, residues, etc. containing lead, tin, arsenic, anti-less. etc., and from the refining of lead by ordinary methods, with molten caustic soda on the metal bath, the lead and metals mixed with the dross in a droplet state pass into the bath, while that the oxides of lead, tin, antimony, etc., combine with soda in the form of plumbate or plumbite, stannate, antimonate, arsenate,

       etc ... The operation can be carried out by vigorously stirring the molten metal and the dross with the molten caustic alkali and by injecting a gaseous oxidant previously heated into the treatment apparatus, the optimum temperature being slightly higher than. melting point of the metal to be refined.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The improved process which is the subject of the invention is based on these observations. It is carried out essentially as follows:
We take impure lead containing antimony, tin, arsenic or other constituent and mixed with dirt, oxides, residues, etc ..., containing in the metallic state or 6'oxides the same items or different items. The molten metal is thoroughly stirred with a molten caustic alkali, for example caustic soda, and a gaseous oxidant (air or a mixture of air and steam) is injected into it, previously heated to a temperature slightly above the melting point of the bath, metal.

   Grasses- ,, oxides, residues, etc ... are distributed in the bath, preferably automatically, and the operation is continued until the alkali is used up, that is to say -said until it has become thick enough. The exhausted reagent is then removed and fresh reagent is charged again, then the process is continued until the attack is complete and, if necessary, the refining of the bath is complete.

   The mass of the resulting salts is treated with water until the density of the liquid reaches 1.55. This cooled liquid contains in suspension most of the antimony in the form of sodium antimonate and tin in the form of sodium stannate. These two compounds are separated by filtration or centrifugation; the cake is washed with water and, after washing, it only contains sodium antimonate which is dried and which is treated by known methods (dry or wet) to obtain the antimony.

   The mother liquors, to which are added the antimonate washing waters, contain, in addition to a little

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 of antimoniate, all tin in the state of stannate, lead in the state of plumbite or plumbate, arsenic in the state of arsenate, etc.

   This mixture is reacted on a tin sponge or preferably on tinplate waste or old cans, adding a little sodium nitrate. The operation is carried out in a trommel at a temperature of 50 to 60 C. In this treatment, the small amount of entrained antimony and all the lead precipitate in the metallic state, while the tin of waste or old cans go into solution as stannate.

   The lead-antimony mixture which goes into production and the. The filtered solution contains all the tin in the form of sodium stannate and the arsenic in the form of arsenate. Traces of lead which could possibly be found there t the state of plumbate due to incomplete precipitation, are eliminated quantitatively in the form of sulphide, by addition of the strictly measured quantity of sulfur or of an alkaline sutfide. This lead sulphide is separated by centrifugation or filtration and the liquor containing only tin and arsenic is added to a solution of copper sulphate in an amount exactly corresponding to the arsenic present.

   This arsenic is thus removed in the form of insoluble cupric arsenate by centrifugal or other filtration and the solution containing only the stannate is treated by means known to recover the tin, either by electrolytic route or by wet route (salts of lime, carbon dioxide, cementation, etc.), or by the dry process.

   The solution, containing only the excess of alkali, is caustified by lime to destroy any soda ash that may be present, then. treated with a barium salt to eliminate overproduction; she is finally focused

 and restart.
