 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  "Process and devices for the manufacture, by drawing, of glass tubes, containers, pharmaceutical ampoules, for example *
The invention relates to a method and to devices for implementing this method for the. manufacture, by drawing glass tubes, of glass containers and, in particular, of pharmaceutical ampoules.

   Until now, the stretching of the bulb tail was obtained by heating a section of glass tube between two supports. One of the two supports being fixed in the direction of drawing, the heating of the tube took place on an invariable surface of the glass tube during the entire heating operation. The softening of the glass under the action of the torch led in this process to multiple drawbacks: first of all, the relatively large surface area of the heated glass tube.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 the glass mass, so that the uneven distribution of the glass mass prevented stretching in a cylindrical shape.

  The taper obtained by the laws of stretching was also very variable depending on the variations of all the characteristics of the glass tubes such as diameter, wall thickness, etc. Another drawback was the difficulty of acting efficiently. on the diameter of the stretched part of the glass tube. In fact, apart from the possibility of adjusting the heating and thus acting on the diameter of the drawing, which was only possible between two very limited limits, the only possible solution was to increase the surface area. heated tube by the use of torches with large heating surface.

   In the latter case the molecular shift in the rao10F binding mass was further accentuated, just as the differences in the diameter of the stretched part of the tube became greater from tube to tube. In almost all cases, the stretched parts of the glass tube exhibited, in addition to exaggerated taper, bosses, narrows along the stretched part. This prejudiced, on the one hand, the good presentation and had, on the other hand, the serious defect of preventing the filling of the ampoules by certain very widespread procedures (filling by funnel, needles, etc.). The only remedy consisted in sorting the manufactured bulbs, resulting in considerable waste at the same time as a high cost price.

   The method, object of the invention, overcomes these drawbacks and it consists, mainly, in carrying out the stretching of the section of glass tube at the same time that a relative movement between the torches is determined.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 blackmail and the section of glass tube so that the stretching occurs successively at different points of the tube at a certain length of the latter
The torches not having to simultaneously heat a large area of tube have a low heating area and consequently the molecular displacement of the heated glass mass becomes very low if not nonexistent and moreover the heating of the tube section is obtained in a very homogeneous way.

   Said method can of course give rise to a large number of embodiments.
According to one of these embodiments, the heaters for heating the section of tube are fixed and the section of tube is held at its two ends by rotary chucks or the like animated along their longitudinal axis with translational movements. having different speeds so that the tube is subjected, at the same time as a translational movement in front of the torches, to a leveling which determines on the part of the driven mandrel the highest translational speed *
According to another of these embodiments, one of the mandrels or the like., Maintaining one of the ends of the tube section, is fixed while the other mandrel is mobile and determines the stretching of the tube section,

   and the heating torches are also movable and move continuously during stretching.

   The stretching can, of course, be carried out in any direction, vertical, horizontal or oblique. simply by way of example and to facilitate understanding of the invention, it has been described below and repre-

 shown in the form of diagrams, in Figures 1 and 2 of the attached drawing, two embodiments of the method of the invention.

   According to the first embodiment of the process, subject of the application, applied for example to the manufacture of pharmaceutical ampoules, embodiment shown schematically in FIG. 1 (represent the different positions occupied by a section of tube of glass 1 during a drawing operation), the section of glass tube 1 used for the manufacture of an ampoule is held by an upper mandrel 2 and by a lower mandrel 3, these two mandrels 2 and 3 both being driven in rotation at the same speed by means of devices known per se.

   The tube 1 is heated to allow its drawing by torches 4 of small area, heating which are arranged in the same plane perpendicular to the tube 1 around the latter for example and in a fixed manner relative to the frame of the machine.

   According to the invention, the mandrel 2 and the mandrel 3 are respectively subjected to the action of a cam 5 and of a cam 6.

   The cam 5 is established and arranged and is chosen with a profile such that after an initial heating time of departure of the glass tube 1 by the torches 4, the mandrel 2 is driven in a translational movement along its longitudinal axis, movement causing it to gradually approach the torches 4;, by driving the tube 1 which thus moves in front of said torches 4.

   The cam 6 is also established, arranged and chosen,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   of a profile such that the mandrel 3 is driven in a translational movement along its longitudinal axis at the same time as the mandrel 2 but that the speed of the mandrel 3 is greater than that of the mandrel 2 so that the tube of glass 1 is subjected to stretching at the same time as it moves in front of the torches 4.

   The surface of the glass tube which is heated at each instant is always very small because of the small heating surface of the torches 1 and the displacement of the heated glass mass becomes very small and sown nonexistent.

   This form of alias implementation of the process object of the invention also makes it possible to use the heating torches to cause the melting of a bottom above the stretched part by modifying the profile of cams 5 and 6, ( position VII and VIII), just as it is possible to obtain, thanks to appropriate profiles of the cams 5 and 6, one or more constrictions along the body or the stretched part of the bulb.

   By varying the speed of drawing the glass tube, at the end of a tube drawing operation it is possible to obtain drawn parts of different diameters. This is easily obtained in this form of implementation by suitably establishing the profile of the cams used.

   A single torch or a single group of torches therefore makes it possible to carry out all the heating operations both for stretching the stem of the bulb and for melting a bottom and constricting it in one or more places of the bulb. bulb.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   According to the second form of implementation of the pxocédé, @ object of the request, also applied to the manufacture of pharmaceutical ampoules which is shown in FIG. 2, (also representing the different positions occupied by a section of glass tube 1 to Couxs of a drawing opexation, the section of glass tube 1 is maintained at its upper part by a fixed eupélieux mandrel 2 and at its lower part by a lower mandrel 3 subjected to the action of a cam 6 communicating to it , after an initial start-up heating time of the tube 1 pax the torches 4, a translational movement along its longitudinal axis, which determines the stretching of the tube 1.

   According to this second form of implementation, the torches 4 are made mobile and are subjected to the action of a cam 7 communicating to them either a holding movement of appropriate speed whatever in the direction opposite to the direction of movement of the mandrel 3. , or a translational movement in the same direction as that of said mandrel 3 but of greater speed.

   In this way, the torches 4 only heat a small area of the tsxbe 1 at any time, the length of the latter having to be subjected to the clamping being heated successively at its various points as the drawing progresses.

   The two tons of implementation of the method, object of the invention which are described above can, of course, be applied either on machines in which the mandrels 2 and 3 are carried by a rotary turret, the cams. 5 and 6 then being fixed pax z relation to the frame, or on machines in which the mandrels
