Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Process for the manufacture of high pressure tanks.

   The tanks which have to withstand very high pressures and possibly very high temperatures are very often made of several layers of sheet rolled up and welded longitudinally. In this way, a thick-walled cylinder is formed which is made up of a number of different layers. Until now, it has been necessary to weld forged or drawn covers to the cylindrical wall in order to close the ends with an unbroken weld joint.

   An essential defect of tanks of this kind is that many solder joints are employed and, in particular, the unbroken solder joint between the cylinder and the cover which, in places, can reach a thickness of 100 to 200 mm. ., represents a great source of danger for the subsequent operation of the cylinder. For certain high pressure cylinders, any welded joint must, for safety reasons,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 be absolutely avoided, so that, in general, reservoirs of this kind must be forged in the full; however, the dimensions of the block constitute a limit.

   To avoid these drawbacks, it was a matter of finding, by some additional hot forming process, a means of bringing the multi-layered reservoirs into a state such that it was allowed later to tuck in the ends of the tube. cylinder or stamping them so that, for the subsequent placement of the obturating members, welding work or any kind of obturation employed heretofore is avoided.

   According to the method forming the subject of the invention, the high pressure hollow bodies are manufactured in such a way that a large number of sheet layers are rolled up one on the other and welded by longitudinal joints and then, after heating to the forging temperature, are shaped, either by forging, rolling or drawing, so that the different layers are welded firmly together and thus strongly adhere to each other and behave like a homo body - uncomfortable.

   Multi-layer tanks, made in this way, are brought to the forging temperature and then, in this state, are shaped according to a process known per se, either by forging, rolling or drawing so that the different layers of the tank are welded. together and strongly adhere to each other. For this it is necessary to manufacture the casings from absolutely clean sheets with a surface free of any oxide and also to ensure that during heating to the forging temperature no oxide enters the sheet separation joints.

   This is achieved, for example because the slots at the ends of the cylinder are previously welded, impermeable to gases, before the tank is introduced into the oven; these end welds can be removed later, after forging, or rolling etc. is completely finished.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The method according to the invention can also be applied in that only the two ends of the cylinder are treated according to the method described above, while the middle part of the cylinder corresponds to a normal multi-layered tank.

   By testing it has been determined that a multi-layered body made in this way, and shaped at forging temperature, can be stamped and processed at its ends in the same way as if the body were made of a material forged in full. The great advantage of a body of this kind over one made from a single block is that its manufacture does not require the forging of large blocks, but that it can be made of sheet metal easily. manufacturable.

   In a more advantageous embodiment of the invention for the manufacture of such cylinders, only the inner layer is made of an alloy particularly resistant to corrosion or heat, while the outer layers may consist of an ordinary material. In this way, compared to the cylinders used hitherto and with solid walls, economic advantages similar to those which have already been manifested by the use of clad sheets are obtained.

   In the case of multi-layered tanks, which are hot-formed by the end-welding process and to which the plugs are obtained by applying a cover by welding, it is not possible to obtain that all the internal surface is formed of a uniform material because the welded joints including the strong welding to the cylindrical part, always represent an annoying separation of material. For special purposes it can be used as the inner layer of the casing of special material, preferably a seamless forged, rolled or drawn pipe. so that, in this case, there is no longer any solder joint inside the cylinder.

   In the attached drawing, fig. 1 shows a sealing tank

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 multiple ches on which a certain number of sheets have been wound. The welding of the longitudinal seams takes place so that they are offset from each other.

   After the treatment of the tank, according to the method of the invention, the latter becomes, as shown in FIG. 2, a homogeneous body which can be pressed at its ends like a forged cylinder.
