<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Device for controlling direct current shunt generators, with reversible direction of rotation. @
The present invention relates to a device for controlling direct current shunt generators with reversible direction of rotation. The purpose of this device is to keep the direction of the current in the excitation winding invariable even when the direction of rotation of the generator is reversed so that, even in this case, the polarity of the generator is not changed. This is above all necessary in the operation of shunt generators with direct current in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
buffer mounting with electric accumulator battery, as is the case in particular for lighting installations for vehicles, for example rail cars.
In the devices currently known and serving for this purpose, we have always used exclusively mechanically working devices. For example, during a change of direction of rotation, the brushes were rotated by a polar pitch in the corresponding direction. However, this arrangement is only possible in the case of freely switching machines without switching blades. In machines with switching poles, a mechanical pole reverser has been used, by means of which, when the direction of rotation is reversed, a corresponding reversal of the branches from the armature to the winding is carried out. excitation.
These mechanical devices have above all the drawback that for the smallest disturbances, the necessary reversal of the poles does not take place quickly enough during a reversal of the direction of rotation but that a significant delay occurs. Disturbances of this kind occur very easily, because these devices are mechanically very complicated and, moreover, work using friction forces which can never be kept constant during a long period of operation and which, moreover, , are difficult to adjust.
All these drawbacks are remedied with the device according to the invention thanks to the fact that, by using a polarized relay, it is only after starting up the dynamo with the direction of rotation reversed and after having obtained a certain voltage. remananoe, that the ends of the excitation windings are electrically connected to the blades of the armature with the intercalation of a switch so that the direction of the current remains invariable in the excitation winding when the direction of rotation is reversed . During this reversal of the direction of rotation, the relay is printed with its other pola-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
rity, which relay automatically establishes the corresponding connection of the excitation winding with the armature pole when the current direction remains the same.
With the device according to the invention, it is also preferable to control, by means of the polarized relay, contactors which put the generator on the network, by reversing the current, that is to say with an unmodified polarity even when the direction rotation is reversed as soon as the generator voltage required to operate the contactors is reached. Preferably, the latter are actuated by the voltage of the network, so that the polarized relay only controls the current actuating the contactor. According to the invention, the excitation winding is connected by the contactors to the poles of the armature, an automatic current feedback device being arranged for this purpose in a manner known per se between the generator and the network.
To protect the polarized relay, an automatic overvoltage switch can be provided which, with interoalation of a resistance, keeps the current driving the polarized relay within acceptable limits, even for the maximum voltage of the generator.
The mounting of the device according to the invention is schematically shown in the appended drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows the principle and
FIG. 2, an exemplary embodiment.
As can be seen in figure 1, to the brushes g, h of the armature a, is connected the winding ¯% of the polarized relay p. The polarized relay n controls the inverter u, to the terminals of which are connected, on the one hand, the ends c, d of the field winding f and, on the other hand, the poles of the armature a. When the machine is stopped, that is to say in the non-energized state of the polarized relay p, the operating levers of the reverser are put in the open position, On the other hand, for a determined direction of rotation of the 'armature a, the brush ± is joined with the end c, and the brush h, with the end d of the field winding, but for the opposite direction of rotation, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
connection between the brushes of the armature a and the ends of the field winding is reversed.
At the same time, at. using the median operating lever of the inverter u, it is sometimes the winding m1 and sometimes the winding m 2 of the contactor s which is connected to the armature brushes. In this way, when the armature is reversed in polarity, using the inverter v controlled by the contactor s, the same polarity is always applied to the lines connecting with the network. The operation of the polarized relay ceases as soon as a certain remanance voltage is reached after starting the dynamo.
The exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 2 relates to an installation in which a battery b is connected to the dynamo in a buffer assembly. In this case, the assembly is simplified in that the reverser controlled by the polarized relay p. only needs three connection terminals, and ael a because, in this case, the voltage of battery b is used to power the winding m1 of contactor s1 as well as the winding m 2 of contactor s2.
These two contactors are used on the one hand, to ensure that, when the poles of the armature a are reversed, the same poles are always connected to the battery and, on the other hand, to connect the ends c and d from the device of the excitation winding f, with corresponding inversion, to the brushes and h of the armature a. This is done in such a way that using the operating lever of the contactors a 1 and s2, the brushes and h of the armature a are inverted. The polarized relay is used, in this exemplary embodiment, to control the contactors a and s2 in a corresponding manner. this is done in such a way that it is sometimes the coil m1 of the contactor s1 where the current flows, and sometimes the coil m2 of the contactor s2.
For this reason, as stated above, three contacts are sufficient for the inverter u controlled by the polarized relay. To protect the winding g of the polarized relay p against an overload, an automatic overvoltage circuit breaker t is provided by means of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of which, when a specified voltage limit is exceeded, the resistor is inserted before the winding of the polarized relay. Up to this voltage limit, resistor w is shorted through the z-bridge using the overvoltage switch t. x is an automatic current feedback device known per se.
The device according to the invention has the special advantage that there is no additional moving part on the armature. We can therefore use without more shunt machines of ordinary construction. This is particularly important when the device is used in lighting installations for vehicles, in particular for railway cars, where the generator is placed most of the time in places which are difficult to access and is subjected to strong shaking. . The box used to mount the device according to the invention can be placed in a protected place and be well suspended, so that there is practically no mechanical wear.
The space which was necessary until now and which is made free by removing the moving part on the armature can be used to increase and raise the power of the generator.
