 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

1 ) Une opération d'extraction ou de lessivage, dont le but 3st de séparer d'une manière aussi complète que possible la cellulose-fibres et tous les autres constituants et surtout lesmatières résineuses;
2 ) la préparation de la cellulose-fibres immédiatement suivie du façonnage des feuilles, sur des machines' adéquates ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  "Process for the production of tobacco leaves".

   The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing tobacco leaves from ribs, scraps and tobacco leaves generally unsuitable for manufacture.

   The process, object of the invention, is essentially characterized by the fact that, unlike the processes already tried, without success moreover, the final product is a tobacco exhibiting the chemical, physical and mechanical qualities of tobacco. natural. From. moreover, the sheets can be produced by any industrial process and above all in a continuous and rapid manner.

   It has already been proposed to start, for a similar production, of ribs and tobacco waste and to process them on paper machines. The solution thus presented is impossible to achieve. To overcome the difficulty, it has been proposed to add various ingredients, the essential purpose of which was to give the tobacco material a sufficiently strong framework to be able to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 see sheets pulling, especially continuously. It has also been recommended to subject the raw material to a preliminary operation, the aim of which is to extract all the soluble materials, which was considered sufficient to obtain a treatable paste. However, this solution is insufficient, because the pulp obtained does not allow the use of paper machines, especially for obtaining final sheets made up of the principles of natural tobacco.

   Contrary to all these proposals', the present invention relates to a total process, which makes it possible to produce in an industrial and systematic manner, leaves very substantially similar to natural tobacco leaves, the mechanical and aromatic qualities of which can be predetermined.

   The method, object of the invention, essentially comprises three well-defined operations'
1) An extraction or leaching operation, the aim of which is to separate as completely as possible the cellulose-fibers and all the other constituents and especially the resinous materials;
2) the preparation of the cellulose-fibers immediately followed by the shaping of the sheets, on suitable machines;
3) the treatment and the preparation of the leaves obtained sub.2, by the extracts collected sub.l with or without addition of other products.

   In this way, it is possible to prepare a pulp which can work on equal terms with paper, with regard to the pulling of the sheets of course, on fast machines and of continuous output.

   The process thus indicated in its essential elements can present variable specifications according to the machines available and the physico-chemical and organoleptic qualities that are desired.

   According to an operating mode given by way of example, the sides and starting scraps are cut into pieces of the order of 3 to 4 cm. length. The material thus fragmented is left to macerate, preferably hot, in leaching baths, 'of which

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 The qualitative composition may vary depending on the origin of the tobacco material. The purpose of this operation is to dissolve all materials other than cellulose.

   The macerated mass is then wrung out, by pressing, by centrifugation or in any other way, in order to extract as much water as possible. Then, the material is washed in order to rid the cellulose fibers as much as possible of all foreign matter, which might still adhere to it. By this intermediate operation, moreover, all the organic matter is recovered which can subsequently be reintroduced into the leaves in proportion to the final qualities desired. This washing operation can effectively be done in diffusers.

   The pulp then passes through defibrators, the purpose of which is to break up the fibers. This operation can be followed by additional treatments, such as separation-of the nodes and possible purification, for example, by flat shaking scrubbers or rotary scrubbers in order to obtain a paste as homogeneous as possible.

   For certain products, the pulp coming from the diffusers could be sent directly to the preparation apparatus, either to the crushers, or to millers, in order to undergo a refining operation there directly.

   The detergents resulting from the above-described treatments will be carefully kept in reserve to be used during the priming of the sheets.

   The dough thus treated is ready for shaping. For this purpose, the paste coming from the diffusers or directly from the mills, passes through refining piles, into which the fining, filler and coloring materials can be introduced. Finally, the paste will be sent to the vat of the machine. , then to the hourglass, to the scrubbers and then to the paper converting machine. The machine will obviously have to be specially designed for the type and weight of the paper, as well as for regulating the daily production.

   At the end of the machine, the paper will be moistened with watering cans or nubilosas and will receive a first / added extract from

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 lossivage or any other aromatic or other product deemed adequate.

     The sheets of tobacco paper thus obtained must then be treated and finished, so as to meet the desired aromatic conditions. In a way, these preparatory sheets constitute the basic tobacco material. The aforementioned rolls or sheets, already slightly moistened on leaving the machine, will pass after a period of maceration in a calender, the coils of which may advantageously be made up, some of shell cast iron to be heated by steam, the others of common materials. pressed (asbestos paper) and combined so as to give the rusts a ,! surface and an appearance best matching the appearance of tobacco leaves.

   the various stages of production completed, it remains to return to the sheet, ends the properties of the tobacco leaf, which will be the subject of the final finish, by dosing and dipping the paper in appropriate solutions.

   It is understood that it is possible to modify the different phases characterizing the process or else to replace them in whole or in part with equivalent phases.

   The machines are also very variable and it is possible to manufacture sheets continuously or in intermittent work.
