 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  "Machine for the continuous manufacture of a smoothed and polished glass strip".

   The invention relates to a method and a machine or installation for producing a smoothed and polished glass strip from a molten glass feeder and relates to a device for shaping the edges of the strip.

   The plant to which the invention relates comprises a furnace for the supply of molten glass, a machine for forming a strip from molten glass, a furnace for the supply of molten glass.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 annealing and a smoothing and polishing machine in which discoid tools, rotating around axes perpendicular to the surfaces of the strip, work simultaneously on these surfaces.

   The edges of the tape are prone to curl generally rising above the top surface of the tape, although they sometimes curl below the bottom surface. The first softening tools may break the belt at the protruding edges before these have been leveled or reduced to the general level of the belt. the protruding edges can be removed by cutting and detaching narrow tabs from the strip before it enters the smoothing apparatus, but it is then found that the sharp rectangular edges which remain cut or scratch the felts of the polishing tools.

   According to the invention, one or more grinding devices are provided, established so as to act on the edges of the strip at a point thereof situated upstream of the polishing apparatus, so as to constitute on the edges of the strip. the stripe of the faces which make an angle with the surface of that strip significantly greater than 90, measured through the substance of the strip.

   When the formed strip has edges which bend so as to protrude on the general plane of the surface of the strip, one or more preliminary grinding devices are provided placed upstream of the softener and intended to act on the edges of the strip so as to grind the protruding part of the curved edge to reduce the latter substantially in the plane of the surface of the strip and. one or more other grinding devices intended to act on the corners of the edges formed by the preliminary grinding devices.

 On the attached drawing:
Fig. 1 is a schematic partial plan view of a machine for making the polished strips.

   Figures 2 and 3 are sections of two shapes given at the edge of the strip.

   Figure 4 is an elevational view, taken looking in the direction of the web, of a pair of edge grinding devices.

   Figure 5 is a side view of the devices of Figure 4.

   Figure 6 shows a grinding wheel forming a curved edge.

   Figure 7 is a section similar to that of Figures 2 and 3.

   Reference will first be made to FIG. 1. The molten glass 1 leaves the basin 2 and is converted into a strip 3 by the laminator 4. The rolled strip passes through a baking oven 5. and arrives to a smoothing apparatus, of which we have represented the first and last of the tools, then to a polishing apparatus, of which only the first tool has been shown 7. Similar tools, located immediately below the tools and 7, work simultaneously on the underside of the belt. Before the strip arrives at the sweetener, the four corners of its two edges are ground by grindersa 8.

   We will first describe the case where the edges of the strip are cut when this strip leaves the annealing oven, which leaves the strip with a rectangular edge 9 (fig. 2) and sharp-angled corners, shown dotted at 10. If such a strip is passed through the doucis-only apparatus, it will be reduced in thickness to the dotted lines 11, the angles of the edge remaining sharp. When such a sharp-angled strip passes through the polishing apparatus, the angles

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 sharp cuts or scratches polish felts and have a detrimental effect on polishing. According to the invention, the sharp angles 10 are cut off by grinding, leaving surfaces 12 which make an angle 13 with the surfaces of the strip which is substantially greater than a right angle.

   An angle of 120 has been shown in the drawing, which has been found to be satisfactory in order to avoid damaging the polishing felts. It is necessary to grind the faces 12 to a sufficient degree to bring them below the planes indicated by the dotted lines 11, so that a part of each face 12 remains below the level of the surface of the strip. polished, i.e. the surface of the smoothed strip indicated by lines 11.

   Figures 4 and 5 show a pair of grinding devices, of the kind indicated by $ in Figure 1 working on the two corners of one edge of the strip $. Electric motors 14 are mounted in slides of a frame 16 and carry grinding wheels 17 working from their flat face. The motor and its wheel assembly can be advanced towards the edge of the belt using a screw 18, and each of the two assemblies is mounted on the frame at a gel angle which it grinds down. faces 12 (fig. 2) at the desired angle.

   We will now describe the case where the edges of the strip are not cut. The shape of the strip is then generally that of FIG. 3 and the profile of the upper surface is that indicated by the dotted line 19, which represents a raised edge. If a strip of this shape is passed through the softening apparatus, the softening tools 6 come into contact with the protrusions 19 and risk breaking the strip before having ground the parts. protruding and resting on the entire surface of the strip.

   A grinding device is then placed, such as the motor 14 provided with a grinding wheel 17 working by its flat face, in the position shown in FIG. 6 (in which

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 only the grinding wheel 17) has been shown so as to reduce by grinding the protruding part 19 substantially up to the line 20, ie to the plane of the surface of the strip. Preferably, the surface thus ground constitutes a very small blade as indicated in FIG. 6. The surface thus ground leaves a corner 21 which, generally, is almost a right angle and would therefore risk damaging the polished felts. - sisters. Consequently, a second grinding wheel is used which cuts down the wedge 21 and forms a face 12 as in the case of the figure.
2.

   We can first work the grinding wheel which forms the face this grinding wheel thus removing part of the projection 19, and then work the other grinding wheel, which forms the surface
The undersurface of the edge is convex and does not have any sharp angles even after it has passed through the softener, so there is no need to grind it.

   Sometimes the edge has curved downwards and in this case the grinding wheels are worked on the surface and the corner below.

   As an alternative, the projection 19 can be reduced so as to constitute a face 22 (-fig.7) which descends to a level lower than that of the plane 11 until which the strip is reduced in the sweetener device. However, this results in more grinding than the formation of the two faces 20 and
12 of figure 3.

   When the strip is provided with a curved edge, the moulder device which reduces the protruding parts of the edge must be placed upstream of the softening device, for example in the position marked 8 in figure 1. The grinding devices which form the face 1a, whether on a strip with a cut edge or on a strip from which the protrusion of a curved edge has been cut, can also conveniently be placed upstream of the sweetener, but they can be placed. place at any point upstream of the polishing device. If they are

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 placed at or near the end of the smoothing apparatus, there will be less glass to be ground to form a face 12 which descends to a level below the surface of the polished strip.
