 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Improvements relating to the valve control mechanism of internal combustion engines".

  -------------------------------------------------- ---
The invention relates to a control mechanism for so-called overhead valves, of the type in which the valves are actuated by rocker arms mounted on a shaft extending along the cylinder head of the cylinder block. In diesel type engines, due to the presence of fuel injectors or atomizers which can be coaxial with respect to the cylinders, it becomes difficult to employ valves (and particularly air intake valves) which provide a sufficient passage and have adequate cooling water space around their seats. The air intake area and, if desired, the exhaust area may be divided between two valves and these may be located in the cylinder heads of the cylinders.

The object of the present invention is to provide an @

 EMI2.1
± ± fv'L4 - ing or both intake and exhaust.

The invention comprises the actuation of a pair of valves from a rocker arm, by means of a lever capable of pivoting about an axis parallel to a line passing through the axes of the two valves, the rocker arm. bearing on the lever, preferably halfway between the valves, while the lever is supported on the valve stems.

The invention further comprises arranging the pair of valves to be actuated in unison so that the plane of their axes forms an angle with the axis of the rocker shaft.

The invention further consists in providing one or more adjusting screws in the lever @ intended to come into contact with one or each valve stem to ensure the simultaneous actuation of the valves notwithstanding any slight difference in their lengths.

   Among the accompanying explanatory drawings:
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a rocker arm, showing a valve control mechanism arranged in accordance with the invention.

Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1.

Figure 3 shows the arrangement of the valves of Figures 1 and 2 with respect to the engine cylinder and the fuel injector or sprayer.

The circle a indicates the bore of an engine cylinder, b and c denote a pair of intake valves held on their seats d and e by springs f. g designates the rocker arm shaft and h the rocker arm which is intended to actuate the pair of valves b and c. Note that a line passing through the axes of the valve stems in the plane of the axis of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

the rocker arm shaft forms an angle with this axis. This arrangement of the valves facilitates their accommodation in the cylinder head with the exhaust valve (s) and the fuel injector, if one is used.

A lever which rotates around a pivot or pin whose axis is parallel to a line connecting the axes of the valve stems in a plane containing the axis of the pivot j, has parts which come into contact with the two valve stems. valve and itself engages the end of the rocker arm h, A screw k, which passes through the lever i and comes into contact with the valve stem b serves to ensure that the valves open simultaneously regardless of any difference that there may be between the lengths of the valve stems.

In figure 3, the sleeve surrounding the fuel injector is indicated in m and the positions of the valves in d and e.

With the construction described, the rocker arm h imparts equal movements to the two valves of the pair, which provide the total area of the intake or exhaust valves of a cylinder. The invention therefore makes it possible to divide the area of the intake or exhaust valves and to obtain satisfactory cooling of the valves and satisfactory operation thereof.

The invention, although particularly advantageous for diesel type engines, is applicable to all internal combustion engines whose valves are actuated by a rocker arm mechanism in the cylinder head.
