<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
trous 32.

Improvements for liquid fuel burners.
The present invention relates to a liquid fuel burner, with a return device for the excess fuel. to be used with an installation for automatic fuel control and intended to maintain a constant pressure in the boilers in accordance with their steam requirements.
In order to obtain a suitable atomization of the liquid fuel, it is advantageous that the pressure at which the fuel is supplied to the atomizing orifice of the burner is constant, any variation of the flow pressure influencing the character of the jet. as it enters the combustion chamber.
For these reasons, it was considered necessary to create a device which would allow the return of the fuel to spring from a situated point. in front of the normal spray opening; for this purpose, the invention provides a second plate, a plate
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
terminal, placed at a certain distance from the normal spray plate, with orifices of the two plates arranged coaxially, said end plate thus becoming the spray plate. The space between these two plates forms a chamber, from which the excess fuel flows to return to its source; in this way, the quantity of fuel atomized in the furnace can be varied within wide limits, without thereby modifying the pressurized stream of the fuel intended for the atomization.
The liquid fuel, coming from a pressurized source and passing through a central tube, is projected in vortices, caused by the effect of slits arranged tangentially, in a chamber provided with a central outlet orifice. As a result of this pressure, the swirling liquid is under the action of a strong centrifugal effect, producing a swirling movement with a hollow core, the ambient surface of which contains the fuel to be sprayed, in whole or in part, during its outlet through the orifice of the end or spray plate.
In the space separating the two plates, devices are provided for removing from this space part of the fuel which swirls in this space, the quantity of this fuel withdrawn is regulated by control means which do not leave remain that the quantity of fuel necessary for the spraying.
Thus, to reduce the quantity of fuel projected from the sprayer, the remainder returning to its stroke, a ring has been provided opposing an inclined wall to the fuel entering the chamber between the two plates; said ring is provided with a series of outlets, in communication with the return pipe for the fuel, and serving as a brake to retard the speed of rotation of the fuel in the chamber; the fuel being captured very efficiently by these orifices, it is possible to return a greater quantity of com-

bustible than with any other device.
In a large fireplace burner, it is useful to return as much fuel as possible as long as the fireplace requires only a minimal amount, because if the amount of fuel to be pulverized increases the amount to be returned. must be reduced proportionally. The device of the present invention, explained in all its details in the following description, effectively suffices for these needs.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge clearly from this description.
In the attached drawing: Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of the improved burner for liquid fuel, with return devices for the fuel, the air supply device, known per se, not being shown, the socket well known being represented only by a part of its screw.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of this burner,
Fig.3 shows, on a larger scale and in section, the front part of the burner.
Fig. 4 is a section of fig.3 along the line 4-4.
In this drawing, 1 represents the usual coupling member with the handle 2.3 indicates an assembly sleeve provided with orifices 4,5 connected on one side to the fuel supply source (not shown) and to the the other side to the channels 6, 7 of said coupling member.
The burner consists of an outer tube 8 and an inner tube 9; due to their relative position, a free passage A is reserved. between the tubes. The tube 8 is screwed into the coupling member 1, as indicated at 10 and the tube 9 passes through an opening applied in a partition 11, dividing the interior of the coupling member into two compartments 12 and 13; this tube 9 carries a ring, open at its end 14, screwed into a stamp 15 of the partition 11 and a free space 16, for
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
by housing a gasket with perfect liquid tightness between the ring and the stamp.
The compartment 12 receives the fuel under pressure through the supply channel 6 and the opening 4 and communicates it to the tube 9, while the compartment 13, receiving the return fuel through the passage A, leads it back to the source through channel 7 and opening 5.
The nozzle body 17 is screwed onto the tube 8 and carries (fig. 3) the cap 18, following the current construction of Todd burners, Likewise the nozzle body is threaded internally at 19, to be able to be placed on the The threaded end of the tube 9, its contiguous end is provided with a series of orifices 20, arranged concentrically, in communication with the tube 9. The closure plate 22 is placed against the nozzle body, the latter is provided with an annular groove 23, adapting perfectly to the orifices 20; similarly it carries a central vortex chamber 24, which is in communication with the groove 23 by means of tangential slots 25, passing through the wall 26 of the partition wall between the chamber 24 and the groove 23.
Liquid fuel, supplied under a predetermined working pressure through tube 9, is forced to swirl in chamber 24, from which it escapes through port 27 in a swirling jet. In the constructions known to date, the orifice 27 would produce the atomization of the fuel, but in the example of the present invention, an additional member is provided in the form of an end plate 28, placed in front of the plate 22 and spaced therefrom, to form the. room 29; said plate 28 carries a spray orifice 30, arranged on the same axis as the orifice 27.
The chamber 29 is connected to the return channel A by means of holes 31, provided in the plate 22, and of holes 32 passing through the nozzle body 27, the latter being provided with a groove 17a forming entry to
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
holes 32.
The orifice 27 is provided with an outlet mouth 27a for the flame, allowing the swirling fuel, exiting through said orifice, to spread more easily into the chamber 29; the face of the plate 22 is provided with an annular groove 22a, limited by an outwardly inclined surface 22b, from which the holes 31 leave, in order to pass through the plate 22 and to establish communication with the holes in the nozzle body 32.
The ridges of the holes 31, located on the inclined surface 22b, have the effect of slowing down the speed of rotation of the fuel swirling in the chamber 29, so that the fuel, instead of simply rotating in said chamber unable to return to the source the total quantity of fuel required by the adjustment of the control device for the return, is now captured by these holes 31, forced to enter and pass through them. By these means, the total amount of the controlled return is admitted to the return, while the amount of fuel, reserved for spraying, can be exactly regulated, while the pressure of input of fuel to the burner remains constant.
It should be noted that the interior surface of the plate 28, surrounding the spray orifice 30, is retracted, to constitute an annular recess in the form of a rim 30a, in the chamber 29, this rim is located all the way. meadows or directly in the plane surrounded by the inclined annular .surface 22b. This rim, constituting an enveloping orifice 30, performs the function of separating the outer part of the tubular formation, comprising the swirling fuel, the remainder of which must pass through said orifice, the quantity of fuel withdrawn in this way being proportional. the controlled capacity of the return channel for this fuel.
The control devices are not shown in the drawing, being known per se, they can be used with one or
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
several burners, both for use with a single boiler or a battery of boilers, all the burners being able to be controlled simultaneously.
