Rocket thruster combustion apparatus. The invention relates to a rocket propellant combustion apparatus, functioning with a liquid fuel (such as, for example, methyl alcohol mixed with water) and an oxidant (for example oxygen li. quide or nitric acid).
This apparatus is characterized according to the invention in that it comprises an ignition device comprising an ignition chamber receiving part of said fuel and said oxidant, said chamber being entered by a cooling space in which circulates a part of the fuel supplied to the ignition device, spraying means being arranged at the outlet of said space, outlet located in the vicinity of the outlet of the ignition chamber, for spraying the fuel leaving said space and burn it in the mixture of fuel and ignited oxidant coming out of the ignition chamber.
The drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the combustion apparatus forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic side elevation of this embodiment.
Fig. 2 is an axial sectional view of the ignition device that comprises said embodiment.
Fig. 3 is an end view, taken from the right of FIG. 2, of this ignition device, and FIG. 4 is a detail view, partially in axial section, of the outlet end of this ignition device.
The combustion apparatus shown, which is part of a rocket thruster, comprises an ignition device 8 comprising an ignition chamber 9, the outlet of which communicates with the combustion chamber 10 of this apparatus. combustion, so that a jet of flame escaping from an outlet channel 11 of chamber 9 meets a main stream of liquid fuel and oxidant supplied to chamber 10 - and ignites this stream. The chamber 10 is surrounded by a jacket 12 and a space formed between the walls of this chamber and this jacket is traversed by the combustible which is brought into this space through an inlet duct 13.
The outlet end of said space is connected to a conduit 14 which is connected at its other end to a positive atomizing device for the fuel, the annular orifice of which is coaxial with a positive atomizing device for the oxidant supplied to this device. through a conduit 15. The wall of the chamber 9 of the ignition device is formed in part by -a jacket, for example of stainless steel, which comprises a cylindrical part 17 which extends over at least half of the length of said jacket, a short cylindrical part 11 of smaller diameter forming the outlet channel of the chamber 9 and a frustoconical part 18 which connects said cylindrical parts 17 and 11 together.
This jacket is placed inside the hollow body 19 of the corresponding shape of the ignition device, so as to leave the narrow space 26 between the jacket and the wall of the hollow body 19. This hollow body comprises a main part 19a, in the form of a go det and a part in the form of a nozzle 19b connected by means of a nut 19c. The bottom of part 19a forms the bottom wall of chamber 9. At the inlet end of the ignition chamber, fittings 20 and 21 are screwed into part 19a of hollow body 19.
These fittings serve respectively to supply liquid fuel and oxidant which are sprayed into the ignition chamber through orifices 22, the fuel and oxidant jets meeting each other in the vicinity of. this inlet end of the - alloying chamber and also in the vicinity of the ignition end of a spark plug or other ignition device 23 which protrudes inside the chamber 9 to through a hole 24 made in the jacket and which serves to cause, initially, the ignition of a pilot flame in this chamber.
The passage sections are dimensioned so that at least one third of the total quantity of fuel supplied to the ignition device is directly sprayed into chamber 9 in the manner just described, the remaining two thirds of this quantity of fuel being brought through it leads 25 into the cooling space 26 surrounding the chamber 9.
The jacket forming part of the wall of the chamber 9 has an outer helical rib 27 which cooperates with the wall of the hollow body 19 to force the fuel flowing through the space 26 to take a rotational movement around the chamber. axis of the ignition chamber. In other places, as shown at 28, 29 and 30, said che fitted further has external annular ribs in each of which are formed several openings 31 directed so as to also communicate with the fuel flowing through the space 26 and passing through these openings 31 a rotational movement around the axis of the chamber 9.
In this way, this part of the fuel which is used to cool the walls of the chamber 9 has acquired a considerable speed of rotation when it leaves the space 26. The fuel having passed through the space 26 leaves the latter. by the annular orifice formed between the wall of part 19b of hollow body 19 and the outlet edge of cylindrical part 11 of sleeve 17, 18, 1.9. This fuel is sprayed at its outlet through this orifice and burns in the mixture of fuel and ignited oxidant exiting: from chamber 9 via channel 11. The arrangement of the apparatus described is such that for the same pressure d The supply to the inlet 19 and to the connector 20, the total quantity of fuel supplied to the ignition device is between 3 and 5% of the total quantity of fuel supplied to this combustion device.
A pressure tap 32 is made in the bottom of part 19a. of the hollow body 19. Thanks to this plug, it is possible to determine whether the ignition has taken place in the ignition chamber and, for example, to ensure by this means an automatic release of the supply of the spark plug. 23 or other ignition device.
