Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The present invention relates to hinges, in particular for windows mounted to pivot about a horizontal axis. The objects of the invention will emerge from the description, given below, of some preferred embodiments thereof.
Two embodiments of the invention are described below with reference to the drawings in which:
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show vertical sections through the line A-A in fig. 4 with the hinge in different positions.
Figure 4 shows a section through line C-C and FIG. 5 a section through line B-B of FIG. 1.
Figs. 6 to 8 inclusive show vertical sections of another embodiment, with the hinge in different positions.
Fig. 9 shows a section through line D-D of FIG. 6.
Fig. 10 shows on a reduced scale a section of a window provided with a hinge according to the invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 5 inclusive,! denotes a window frame carrying a plate 2 provided with a hook-shaped member 3 projecting beyond the edge of the window frame inside the window and provided with a slot 4 which is open at the top.
In this embodiment, the movable frame 5 consists of a T-shaped bar to which a tile 6 is attached in a known manner. Between the plate 2 of the fixed frame 1 and the movable frame 5 is placed a member generally designated by M whose parts 7 and 9 are parallel to each other and respectively connected by a pivot to the plate 3 and to the movable frame 5, by means of pins 10 and 11 respectively, the first engaging in the slot 4.
In addition, the member M comprises a part 8 perpendicular to parts 7 and 9 and extending upwards and downwards as shown in FIGS. 1 to 3 inclusive. At the vertical edges of the window, each space between the fixed frame 2 and the mobile frame 5 is filled with a wooden bar comprising an upper part 12 and a lower part 13, the first 12 being fixed to the mobile frame 5. while the second 13 is fixed to the fixed frame 2.
When the window is closed, the parts occupy the position shown in FIG. 1. When the window is opened, the movable frame pivots around the spindle 11 until the lower end of the bar 12 comes to rest against the upper inclined part of the member M, as shown in fig. 2.
The continuation of the rotation cannot then take place around the pivot II, but owing to the fact that the member 12 is' in engagement with the member M, this member M is dragged in. the rest of the pivoting movement that takes place
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
around pin 10, as shown in fig. 3. If the horizontal axis of gravity of the movable frame passes near the center of the pivot 11, the first part of the pivoting movement, (around the pivot 11) o corresponding to the movement to a suitable ventilation position, is easily performed. since the window is balanced or nearly balanced throughout.
Further pivoting (around spindle 1a) is usually only necessary when the window is to be cleaned and since spindle 10 is preferably placed above the horizontal axis of gravity, enough force is required for this continuation. of the pivoting movement. From the foregoing, it follows that all the windows of a facade of a building automatically occupy the position shown in FIG. 2 when open for ventilation. The general impression is thus favorably influenced. 'For the same reason any tendency to spin caused by the wind is also effectively combated.
As a result of the fact that the member M advances at its upper and lower edges in cavities of the wooden bars 12 and 13, as shown in FIG. 1, a suitable sealing effect of the vertical window seals is obtained at the location of the hinges as well.
In the embodiment shown in figs 6-10 inclusive, 2I denotes a window frame and 22 a frame movable so as to pivot therein.
The hinge comprises a main part 23 fixed to the fixed frame and another main part 24 facing the part 23 and fixed to the movable frame. In fig. 6 to 8 inclusive, the fixed frame 2I and the main part 23 mentioned first are shown. in solid lines, while the movable frame 22 and the part
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
main tie 24 mentioned second are shown in chain lines. The part 24 is provided with a member 25 serving as a pivot. In the closed position of the mobile frame, shown in fig. 6, this member 25 rests on a bearing surface 26 of the part 23.
The member 25 and its bearing surface 26 belong respectively to laterally projecting parts 27 and 28, provided on the main parts 24 and 23 of the hinge and forming sealing abutments for the abutment surfaces. corresponding in the fixed frame and the mobile frame respectively. A good sealing effect is thus obtained on the joint between the fixed frame and the mobile frame, also at the location of the hinges. The space between the fixed frame 21 and the movable frame 22 on the vertical edges of the window is filled by a wooden bar fixed to the movable frame above the hinge and by another wooden bar fixed to the fixed frame in- below the hinge.
These wooden bars form an extension of the sealing stops between the fixed frame and the mobile frame, formed by the parts 27 and 28 projecting laterally.
When opening the window for ventilation, the movable frame pivots on the bearing surface 26 until a pin 29 acting as a pivot has described an arcuate path around the pivot axis passing through the 'member 25, and when it is moved from the position shown in FIG. 6 to that shown in FIG. 7, this pin 29 reaches the bottom of the guide slot 30 of the other main part 23. In the example shown, this pin 29 is screwed into the main part 24 and provided with a setting nut.
Preferably, the movable window frames with their panes and their accessories are arranged such that the common center of gravity of the parts
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
window is somewhere between the vertical planes passing through the pivot axes 25 and 29 when the window occupies the position shown in Fig. 7.
The movable frames thus acquire a stable equilibrium position (fig. 7) which they constantly tend to occupy when the center of gravity comes between these two vertical planes. In sight. to obtain a good ventilation effect, this position of equilibrium is chosen so that the movable frame of a window of normal height forms an angle of about 10 to. 30 aved the vertical plane or so as to place the lower edge of its interior at about 10 cm. at 20 cm. from the outside of the window frame.
When the window is opened for example to clean the outside of the tiles, the movable frames are further rotated by pivoting on the spindle 29.
The main parts of the hinge are shaped in such a way that the movement of the part 24 fixed to the movable frame is not hampered by the other main part 23 during the rotation of the movable frame. When the mobile frames are turned a full half turn, the hinges occupy the position shown in FIG. 8. In this position, it is also possible to separate the movable frame from the fixed frame by lifting the movable frame so as to cause the pivot 29 to come out through the open upper end of the slot 30. The movable frame can be assembled. - carried out by movement in the opposite direction, that is to say by passing the broohes 29 in the slots 30.
The window is closed by rotating the movable frame in a direction opposite to the opening direction.
By adjusting the screw 29, the desired degree of friction between the parts of the hinge can be obtained which causes some braking effect on the moving parts.
In order to increase this braking effect, the hinge can
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
also be provided with a member made of a material having a high coefficient of friction, or be provided with a spring device or the like.
The main parts of the hinge are preferably arranged so as to be movable longitudinally with respect to the pivot axis, as shown in the drawing.
Within the window the hinge is preferably provided with a cover which is suitably made concentric with the slot 30 and comprises two parts; one of these parts is connected to the fixed frame 2I and the other to the mobile frame 22. Each part of the covering hides one of the main parts of the hinge and reaches the joint 3I between these main parts.
