<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Dans un changement de vitesse suivant la présente invention, fournissant au moins trois rapports de vitesse entre l'arbre d'entrée et l'arbre de sortie, les chemins de transmission du rapport de vitesse supérieure et du rapport de vitesse moyenne comprennent un embrayage commun de sélection de la vitesse, comportant trois organes ooaxiaux pouvant tourner l'un par rapport à l'autre, le premier et le troisième de ces organes portant des dents, le premier et le deuxième étant en prise pour fournir la vitesse moyenne, et le troisième et le deuxième étant en prise pour fournir la vitesse élevée;
ledit embrayage comprenant un organe intermédiaire denté, convenablement monté sur le deuxième organe de manière à se mouvoir hélicoidalement sur celui-ci depuis une première position dans laquelle les dents ne sont pas en prise, en traversant une deuxième position où le premier organe et l'organe intermédiaire sont en prise, en traversant également une troisième position dans laquelle les dents ne sont pas en prise, pour arriver à une quatrième position où le troisième organe et l'organe intermédiaire sont en prise, et comportant encore ±}

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>

<Desc/Clms Page number 20>
<Desc/Clms Page number 21>

Improvements to synchronizing couplings and gear changes.
The present invention relates to mechanical coupling devices for use in rotary power transmission mechanisms, as well as combinations of variable speed power transmission mechanisms, including coupling devices; kind.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It is an object of the present invention to provide a controllable unidirectional coupling device of improved form constituting a modification of the synchronized coupling described in British Patent No. 354,711 of May 6, 1930 and in the United Kingdom patent. 410.083 requested on
5 August .
Another object of the invention is to provide a gear change comprising an improved form of positive gear selection clutch.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gear change giving three, or more than three forward gears using positive gear selection means, in which all changes from one of these gears to another can be done synchronously while the gear change apparatus is running, and without the need to decouple a main clutch associated with the gear change.
According to the present invention, a synchronized coupling comprises a first toothed member (which may be the driving member or the driven member), a second member (may be the driven member or the driving member), an intermediate member comprising teeth being able to engage with the teeth of the first of said members, said intermediate member being mounted in such a way on the second of said members that it is forced to move helically thereon during the rotation of said intermediate member relative to said second member, said intermediate member being capable, during this helical movement, of effecting an axial displacement relative to the first of said members.
members from a first position in which said teeth are not engaged, passing through a second position where said teeth are engaged, to reach a third position where the teeth are again out of engagement,

the coupling also comprising two auxiliary ratchet drives adapted to couple said first member and the intermediate member and serving to effect the engagement of the teeth of the first member and of the intermediate member without shock, by moving the intermediate member respectively from from the first and third of said positions, to the second position during angular displacement of the first and second of said members respectively in one direction and in the other,
and adjustable control means to prevent said intermediate member from exceeding the second of said positions when it is moved from at least one of said first or third positions.
In a gearshift according to the present invention, providing at least three gear ratios between the input shaft and the output shaft, the transmission paths of the top gear ratio and the middle gear ratio include a common clutch. gear selection, comprising three ooaxial members capable of rotating with respect to one another, the first and the third of these members bearing teeth, the first and the second being engaged to provide the average speed, and the third and second being in gear to provide the high speed;
said clutch comprising a toothed intermediate member, suitably mounted on the second member so as to move helically thereon from a first position in which the teeth are not engaged, passing through a second position where the first member and the intermediate member are engaged, also crossing a third position in which the teeth are not engaged, to arrive at a fourth position where the third member and the intermediate member are engaged, and further comprising ±}

pawls on at least one of said toothed members, arranged.
so as to engage teeth on the remainder of said toothed members to effect the engagement of the first member and the intermediate member by moving said intermediate member from the first or the third position respectively to the second position when the ratio of speeds of the input shaft and of the output shaft is respectively lower or higher than the ratio provided by the average speed, and to effect the engagement of the third member with the intermediate member by moving said intermediate member from said third position in the fourth position when the ratio of the speeds of the input shaft and the output shaft tends to become less than the ratio provided by the higher speed,
and alternately operable control means to lock said intermediate member in said fourth position and to prevent said intermediate member from exceeding the second position when it is moved from the third position.
The invention will be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, relating to a gearshift providing three gear ratios of, forward and one reverse, and suitable for use. in a road vehicle, powered by an internal combustion engine.

The gear change shown in Figure 1 comprises a housing 10 in which is carried an input shaft 11, the left end of this shaft being carried by a bearing, not shown. The shaft 11 may suitably be the driven shaft of a main clutch, such as a hydraulic coupling comprising a release control, of the kind described in Belgian patent N 382,906 applied for September 25, 1931, or. well a centrifugal friction clutch, connecting the engine to the. ohan-

speed management. A pinion 12 attached to shaft 11 is constantly in engagement with a gear 13 attached to a constantly rotating intermediate shaft 14.
A medium speed gear 15 is mounted idle on the input shaft 11 by means of the ball bearings 16 and 17, and meshes with a gear 18 fixed to the intermediate shaft 14 and of diameter smaller than that of the gear 13. An output shaft 19 is carried at 20 in the housing 10, its left end being carried by a sleeve bearing 21 in a hole made in the input shaft 11. A sleeve 22 is carried by the roller bearings. 23 on a bush 24 formed on the output shaft.
This bearing is clamped, together with the inner race of the bearing 20 and with a locking sleeve 25, between a split ring 26 and a nut 28. The ring 26 is housed in a circumferential groove 29 formed in helical threads 27 pitch cut into the shaft 19, and the locking sleeve 25 has internal threads 30 in engagement with the threads 27 and holding the sleeve 25 in a definite angular position with respect to the thread. shaft 19. A lower gear 31 is mounted idle on the sleeve 22 and is constantly in engagement with a pinion 32 integral with the intermediate shaft 14.
An internally threaded reverse gear 33 34 is slidably mounted on threads 35 formed on sleeve 22, and its threads 34 are adapted to engage threads 36 'formed on gear 31. A selection rod 37 is provided with a fork 38 engaged in a circumferential groove 39 formed in the hub of gear 33,
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
A crazy reverse group is formed by two gears 40 and 41 (shown in dotted lines in the expanded view). These gears are journaled on a fixed shaft whose axis is indicated by the reference 42.
Gear 41 is constantly in mesh with gear 32, while gear 40 is adapted to be engaged by reverse sliding gear 33 when selector 37 is in its far left position. When this selector is in the neutral position, the reverse gear 33 is disengaged from both the gear 40 and the gear 31,
The clutch mechanism for the selection of forward speeds comprises an intermediate member in the form of a nut 50 in engagement with the threads 27 on the output shaft, so as to be forced to move helically on. this shaft between the ring 26 and a split ring 51 retained in a thread 52 by a ring 53 with flanges and by a spring ring 54. The nut 50 has a flange 55 provided on its circumference with radial teeth 56.
When the nut 50 is in its extreme left position, the teeth 56 engage with teeth 57 formed on a drum 58 integral with the input shaft 11. At an extension 59 of the gear 15 is. attached a ring 60 provided with interior teeth 61 adapted to engage the teeth 56 as the nut moves to the right from the position shown. At one end of the sleeve 22 is a toothed ring 62 in which the toothing 56 of the nut can engage when the nut occupies the extreme right position.
On the left side of ledge 55 is one or
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
several pawls 63 pivoted on pins 64. The noses 65 of these pawls (Figure 2) are directed in the normal direction of rotation (indicated by the arrow on the input shaft 11 in Figure 1) and protrude slightly forward ( in the circumferential direction) of the front faces of the teeth 56 closest to the pawls. The tooth clearances and the amount of pawls protruding have been exaggerated in Figure 2.
Springs 66 urge the pawls out of the position shown. On the right face of the rim 55 is one or more pawls 67 arranged in a manner analogous to the pawls 63, with the difference that their noses are directed backwards with respect to said direction of rotation and are located slightly behind the rear faces. of the nearest teeth 56.
Means will now be described for locking the nut 50 in the positions corresponding to the various speeds. The angle of the helix formed by the threads 27 on the shaft 19 is such that the nut 50 is constrained to turn by 450 with respect to the shaft 19 when it is moved over its entire length. stroke on the shaft, that is to say from the position where it is in contact with the stop ring 26, up to the position of contact with the stop ring 51, Nut 50 comprises eight threads 50A uniformly distributed on the axis, each thread having a width equal to the width of the grooves included between them. The grooves are constantly engaged with eight alternately long and short threads, 70A and 70B, formed on the inside of a locking sleeve 70.
The locking sleeve 25 has two rings of short axial threads 25A and 25B separated by a space
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
circumferential 250. There are eight uniformly distributed threads 25B, each having a thickness (in the circumferential direction) equal to that of the grooves included between them, and there are four evenly distributed threads 25A, having the same thickness as the threads 25B and suitably arranged so as to face, in the axial direction, the grooves between the threads 25B (FIG. 3).
A second locking sleeve 71 is slidably mounted on the sleeve 70 and is provided with internal axial threads 7IA constantly engaged with the threads 700 formed on the sleeve 70, thus preventing rotation of the sleeves 70 and 71 one by one. compared to each other.
The sleeve 71 is also provided with eight uniformly distributed axial threads 71B, each having a thickness equal to that of the grooves included between them. The threads 71B are suitably arranged to lie in axial direction with the grooves between the threads 70A and 70B, and their length is such that they can fit within the gap 250. When the mechanism is in the configuration shown in Figures 1 and 3, the end faces of the threads 70B protrude halfway circumferentially from the end faces of the threads 25A.
The locking sleeves 70 and 71 are provided with shoulders 72 and 73 cooperating with the ends, with internal edges, of a selector tube 74 housed in the sleeve 22. A selector ring 75 is slidably mounted on the sleeve 22, which is provided with three slots 76 (Figure 4). In each of these slots is housed
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
a pin 77 by means of which the tube 74 is rigidly connected to the ring 75. A selector fork / mounted on a selector rod 79 engages in a groove 80 formed in the ring 75. The sleeves lock 70 and 71 are urged so as to occupy the relative position shown in FIG. 1 by three light helical compression springs 81.
These springs are guided by pins 82 screwed to the sleeve 70 at the bottom of the counterbores 83. Three radial pins 84 are fixed in the sleeve 71 and protrude into the grooves 85 of the sleeve 70. These grooves have a suitable length so that the axes 84 prevent the sleeves 70 and 71 from being separated by the springs 81 by a sufficient distance from each other for the two shoulders 72 and 73 to rub simultaneously against the flanged ends of the tube 74.
When the parts are in the configuration shown in Figure 1, the axial space between the ends of the threads 70A and 25A is slightly less than the axial space between the ends of the threads 71B and 25B.
It follows that when the selector tube 74 is pushed to the right so as to make the threads 70A abut against the ends of the threads 25A, there will still be a fairly significant axial space between the ends of the threads 7IB and 25.8.
The control mechanism (Figures 1, 5, 18, 19 and 20) includes a gearshift lever 90 attached to a shaft 91 slidably journalled in a support 92 mounted in the vehicle fixedly relative to the housing 10 of the gear switch. At the lower end of the lever 90 is fixed a pin 93 which can be engaged.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
alternately in the holes 94 and 95 formed respectively. in the arms 98 and 99 pivotally mounted on the support 92 so as to oscillate in planes parallel to the plane of movement of the lever 90. The arms 98 and 99 are articulated respectively by the connecting rods 100 and 101 to the rods of selection 79 and 37.
The rod 37 has three notches 37A, 37B and 37C cooperating with a position plunger 96 actuated by a spring and corresponding respectively to the "forward", "neutral" and "reverse" positions. The selection rod 79 has three notches 79A, 79B and 79C cooperating with a position plunger 97 actuated by a spring and corresponding respectively to the positions of "higher speed" or third speed, of "lower speed" or first speed and of "speed. medium "or second gear.
A resilient connection is provided between the selection rod 79 and the fork 78. As shown in FIG. 5, a coil spring 102 is arranged around the rod 79, this spring being normally partially compressed between two collars 103 and 104 capable of sliding on the rod 79 and inside a tubular body 105 of the fork 78. Spring rings 106 and 107 are inserted in circumferential grooves formed in the rod 79 and respectively constitute stops for the collars 103 and 104.
One end of tube 105 has an inwardly facing rim 108 formed to contact collar 104 without contacting ring spring 107, and the other end of the tube has a hollow screw cap. 109 formed so as to come into
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
contact with the collar 103 without touching the spring ring 106. If the rod 79 is moved to the right, the fork being prevented from following this movement, the ring 106 will force the collar 103 to the right and further compress the spring 102 against the collar 104 which rests against the flange 108. When the fork is free to move, the spring 102 relaxes, forcing the fork to the right until the collar 104 is positively stopped by ring 107.
A similar action can take place when the rod is moved to the left.
The gearshift lever 90 moves in a window 110 having the shape shown in figure 20 and allowing continuous passage from the reverse position (R), through neutral (N), first gear (1) and the second gear (2), at the third gear position (3).
The forces of the various springs are suitably chosen so that the compression of the spring 102 of the selection fork 78, in the normal position shown in FIG. 5, is sufficient to keep the springs 81 of the locking sleeves compressed; the constraint on the movement of the selection rod 79, exerted by the position plunger 97 actuated by a spring, is sufficient to keep this rod at rest when the spring 102 is fully compressed.
Gear shifting works as follows
Starting from rest, to obtain the first gear, the gearshift lever is put in the position shown in figures 18, 19 and 20. During the
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
coupling of the main clutch (not shown), the input shaft 11 begins to rotate, rotating with it the teeth 57; teeth 61 will therefore rotate forward at a lower speed, and sleeve 22, together with teeth 62, will rotate forward at an even lower speed. If the nut 50 comes to be in its extreme left position, the teeth 57 will cooperate with the teeth 56 to bring the nut to the position shown in Figure 1.
At this moment one of the pawls 67 will be gripped by a tooth 61 moving the nut to the right until the moment when the teeth 56 and 61 come into engagement. The movement continues until one of the pawls 67 engages between two teeth 62, which causes the nut to drive to stop 26, bringing the teeth 56 and 62 into engagement. power is now found transmitted through gears 12 and 13, through countershaft 14, gears 32 and 31, gear 33 acting as a jaw clutch, through sleeve 22, and from there through the nut 50, the threads 27 and the stop 26, to the output shaft 19.
To change to second gear, the gearshift lever 90 is brought to position 2 (figure 20), thus causing the selection rod 79 to move to the right until the notch 79C is engaged by the plunger of position 97. As the ends of the threads 70A on the locking sleeve 70 abut the ends of the threads 25A on the locking sleeve, as shown in Figures 6 and 7, the spring 102 of the selector fork 78 will be compressed. . The engine is then left to slow down.
Given
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
that the inertia of the vehicle continues to drive the output shaft 19 without appreciable reduction in speed, the teeth 62 carried on the sleeve 22 of the first speed cooperate with the teeth 56 of the sleeve to move the latter towards the left until the moment where the pawls 63 are brought into the path of the teeth 61 of second speed. At first the teeth 61 slide on the pawls 63, but, as the engine speed continues to decrease and as a result the speed of the teeth 61 tends to drop below that of the nut 50, a tooth 61 will finally seize one of the pawls 63, thus driving the nut further to the left until the teeth 56 come into engagement with the teeth 61.
These teeth then cooperate to continue the displacement of the nut to the left.
This movement of the nut to the left will have produced a rotation of the locking sleeves 70 and 71 back from the locking sleeve 25 on the output shaft, and, by the time the teeth 56 and 61 come fully into engagement , as seen in Figure 7, the long threads 70A on the locking sleeve 70 slide around the rear ends of the threads 25A and allow the locking sleeves 70 and 71 to move to the right under the effect of the selector spring 102 At this point, the threads 71B on the locking sleeve 71 face the grooves between the threads 25B on the locking sleeve 25.
As, however, the action of teeth 56 and 61 continues to cause the nut to move to the left and therefore to rotate it backwards with respect to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
lock 25, and since, at the instant when the threads 70A slide around the threads 25A, there is still a fairly significant axial space between the threads 71B and 25B, during the time required for the selection mechanism to effect the displacement of the sleeve. locking 71 far enough to the right to eliminate this axial space, the rotation of the nut relative to the output shaft will have brought the threads 71B into a position such that their ends abut against the ends of the threads 25B, so that the locking sleeve 71 is prevented from moving further to the right,
the two sleeves 70 and 71 being telescoped together by compressing the springs 81. The nut finally reaches the position shown in figure 8.
In this position, the pawls 67 slide on the teeth 61, and the pawls 63 slide on the teeth 57 which rotate with the input shaft and, therefore, at a speed greater than that of the nut 50. The four Long threads 70A on locking sleeve 70 are now spaced circumferentially from teeth 25A on locking sleeve 25, as shown in Figure 9.
The engine is then accelerated again, and as soon as the second speed teeth 61 tend to rotate faster than the output shaft 19, one of the pawls 67 will be gripped by a tooth 61, producing movement of the nut. 50 to the right, the teeth 56 of the nut being in engagement with the teeth 61. The forward rotation thus produced, of the nut 50 on the output shaft 19 brings together the front faces of the long threads 70A against the rear faces of the threads 25A, and, when the teeth 56 and 61 have fully engaged (FIG. 10), the
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
Threads 70A engage in threads 25A (Figure 11) and these threads thus cooperate to prevent any further movement of the nut to the right.
At the same time, the threads 71B face the grooves between the threads 25B, and the springs 81 move the locking sleeve 71 to the right until the threads 25B and 71B engage with each other. other.
The device is now in the desired position to transmit both direct torque (from the engine to the wheels of the vehicle) and reverse torque (from the wheels to the engine) with the transmission ratio corresponding to the second gear, the driving power being transmitted from the shaft 11 by the wheels 12, 13, 18 and 15, the nut 50 and the locking threads 50A, 70A and 25A, to the output shaft 19.
It can be seen that the operation of changing from first to second gear includes maintaining the second gear coupling in the free position in both directions until the moment when the ratio of the speeds of the input shaft and the output shaft will have fallen to a value between those of the first and second gear ratios, followed by the transformation of the second gear coupling into a freewheeling system, accelerating the motor until the wheel coupling freewheel, ie stops functioning as a freewheel, and finally the coupling lock in both directions.
Since the drive is taken over by engaging a freewheeling coupling and this coupling can only be locked in both directions when its leading and driven parts are rotating
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
in synchronism, there is no risk of sudden engagement.
To change from second to third gear, the gearshift lever 90 is moved, while the engine is still providing power, to position 3 (Figure 20), thus producing a displacement of the selector rod 79 to the position in which the notch 79A is engaged by the position plunger 97. Since the threads 71B and 25B do not transmit power, the locking sleeve 71 is free to move towards the gauxhe until the moment when the threads 71B threads abut against 25A threads, the difference between the stroke of the selection rod 79 and the locking sleeve 71 being absorbed by the selection spring 102. As the locking sleeve 70 still transmits a driving torque, it remains retained by friction in the position shown in Figures 10 and 11, the springs 81 being compressed.
The engine is then slowed down. As soon as the drive torque disappears, the locking sleeve 70 is moved by the springs 81 to the position shown in FIG. 12. When the speed of the input shaft 11 falls relative to that of the drive shaft. output 19, the teeth 61 of second speed cooperate with the teeth 56 of the nut to move the nut to the left to the position shown in Figures 1 and 3, the pawls 63 and 67 sliding on the teeth 57 and 61. When the speed of the input shaft 11 tends to fall below that of the output shaft, one of the pawls 63 is gripped by a tooth 57 and causes a displacement of the nut to the left against the 'stop 51, bringing the teeth 56
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
of the nut in full engagement with the teeth 57 of third gear.
The input and output shafts are held in synchronism by reverse torque, the nut 50 cooperating with the third speed teeth 57 to form a reverse unidirectional coupling. The situation of the various parts at the moment when the synchronism has just been reached is shown in Figures 12 and 13.
As soon as the synchronism is produced, the threads 71B are located in the shape of the grooves between the threads 25A, so that the selection spring 102 can cause the displacement of the locking sleeves 70 and 71 to the positions shown in Figures 14 and 15, with the 25A and 71B threads engaged.
The nut 50 is thus locked in the far left position, and when the motor produces power again, the nut is prevented from moving on the output shaft, and the drive is transmitted from it. 'shaft 11 to nut 50 and thence to output shaft 19 through locking sleeves 70 and 71 and threads 71B and 25A.
The means described for engaging the third gear are the subject of Belgian patent no.424,440 applied for on November 4, 1937.
To shift from third to second gear, the gearshift lever 90 is moved to the second gear position and the motor is momentarily slowed down to unload the locking threads 71B and 25A and to allow the locking sleeve 71 to move. move to the right under the effect of the springs 81.
The engine is then accelerated again, and the teeth 57 of third speed cooperate with the teeth 56 of
<Desc / Clms Page number 19>
the nut to move the nut to the right, the second gear being engaged as described above with reference to figures 10 and 11.
To change from second to first gear, the gearshift lever is actuated so as to move the selection rod 79 to the position shown in FIG. 1 and thus to bring the threads 71B into the circumferential space 25C. The locking sleeve 70 is, due to the driving torque which it transmits, momentarily maintained by the friction exerted between the threads, in the position shown in FIGS. 10 and 11, the springs 81 being compressed. The motor is then slowed down momentarily to remove the driving torque and to allow the locking sleeve 70 to be moved by the springs 81 to the position shown in Figure 1, and when the motor is accelerated again, the first speed will be engagement as described above.
To obtain reverse gear, with the output shaft stationary and the gear shift lever in position 1, the input shaft 11 is allowed to rotate forward only the amount necessary to engage. first gear, and then the gear lever 90 is put in position R. When the gear lever comes into contact with the portion 112 of the window (figure 20), the selection rod 79 is moved to the position in which its notch 79A is engaged by the position plunger 97. The locking threads 25A and 71B are thereby engaged, as shown in Figures 16 and 17, the teeth 56 of the nut remaining in engagement with the nuts. first speed 62 teeth.
When the shift lever moves
<Desc / Clms Page number 20>
moves laterally to come into contact with the portion 111 of the window, the pin 93 on the gearshift lever (FIG. 19) disengages from the hole 94 made in the arm 98 and enters the hole 95 of the arm 99. When the lever finally arrives at the position R, it causes the movement of the selection rod 37 through the neutral position to the position in which the notch 370 engages the plunger of position 96. The sliding gear 33 is located thus slid out of engagement with gear 31 and into engagement with idle gear 40 of reverse.
When the main clutch is engaged again, the drive is transmitted from the shaft 11 through the wheels 12 and 13, the intermediate shaft 14, the wheels 32, 41, 40 and 33, the sleeve 22 and nut 50, and from there through locking sleeves 70 and 71 and threads 71B and 25A to output shaft 19.
In some embodiments of the improved synchronized coupling, it is desirable to omit sleeve 22 and teeth 62 in the embodiment shown in Figure 1. It follows that when the locking sleeves are in the configuration shown in Figure 1. and that the teeth 61 are driven forward at a speed greater than that of the output shaft 19 so that the nut is driven forward with respect to the output shaft, the inertia of the nut will cause the latter to the right against the stop 26 after the teeth 56 have left the teeth 61. Under these conditions, the coupling is not only free in both directions, but all the pawls are still outside the trajectories teeth and do not rub against them.
The coupling
<Desc / Clms Page number 21>
can be returned to the operating position by actuating the control means to move the selection tube 74 to its extreme left position. This has the effect of causing the left end of the locking sleeve 70 to engage with the pivot pins of the pawls 67 and thus to move the nut to the left by a sufficient amount to bring its pawls 63 into the path of the teeth 61 .
The improved synchronized coupling is, of course, also applicable to gear changes arranged other than that of Fig. 1. Thus, for example, when synchronized coupling is used in the speed change of rail vehicles, it is often desired. to obtain a freewheeling effect.
In this case, the coupling arrangement shown in FIG. 1 can be modified by omitting the driving member 58 and the teeth 57, by suitably arranging the stop 51 so that the extreme left position of the nut 50 is that in which it has been shown in Figure 1, and suitably choosing the lengths of the locking threads so that the right ends of the threads 70A can engage the left ends of the threads 25A while the threads 71B are still in the circumferential space 25C, the selection rod 79 being moved to a suitable position of freewheeling. If it is not desired to obtain a drive in both directions at will, the locking sleeve 71 and the threads 25B can be omitted.
