Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

   Method and device for the continuous manufacture of glass tubes and the like.

   One of the known methods of continuously manufacturing glass tubes is to pick up the molten glass by means of a ring-shaped primer to which the glass adheres forming a thick sleeve, and then to exert downward traction. up on the primer, at the same time injecting pressurized air inside the sleeve before the glass solidifies, so as to prevent the shrinkage of the tube being formed, the stretch being then continued by organs which seize the tube as it solidifies.

   The picking of the glass is carried out either in a bowl which is supplied with molten glass as the drawing progresses, or in a hollow float immersed in the furnace or melting basin, the glass penetrating inside me from the float to its

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 bottom + and going up towards an upper annular orifice forming a die, from where it is extracted by the primer intended to stretch it.

  The pressurized air is brought through a channel in the tapping bowl or in the float.

   The drawback of the aforementioned method lies in the difficulty of adjusting the action of the air injected on the still soft glass of the sleeve, so as to obtain a tube of constant internal diameter.

   The present invention overcomes this drawback.

  It comprises a process which consists in deflecting the air streams at their exit from the channel arranged in the collection bowl or in the float, by spreading them towards the internal face of the sleeve being drawn, then in making them. then pass from bottom to top in an annular space along this face. The air veins by expanding, diverge from the axis of the glass sleeve ,, and their inclination on this axis decreases from bottom to top, that is to say from the lower veins to the veins higher. The path thus imposed on the air streams has the effect of rapidly increasing the viscosity of the glass layers of the sleeve and thus stabilizing its internal profile while minimizing the effect of the variations which occur in the temperature and pressure of the sleeve. the gas column inside the sleeve.

   The subject of the invention is also an embodiment of the method thus described, in which a device is combined for forming a hollow glass sleeve and injecting air therein with a device for expanding or diffusing the air streams by directing them first towards the internal face of the manohon then parallel to this face.

   This embodiment and the diffuser device that it comprises are described below and shown in the appended drawing only by way of example.

   Fig.l is a vertical section of the device for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 form the glass sleeve and the diffuser device.

   Fig.2 is a perspective view of the diffuser on a larger scale.

   Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section along line 3-3 of fig. 4
Ea fig.4 is an elevational view.

   Fig. 5 is a horizontal section, along line 5-5 of fig.4.

   According to the embodiment shown in fig.l, the tube manufacturing installation comprises a float 1 immersed in the molten glass bath 2, by known means and not shown. This float comprises channels 3 intended to bring the glass from a lower inlet orifice 4 to an upper annular orifice 5 forming a die. From this orifice is drawn a glass ring which is drawn in the form of a sleeve 6 by an annular starter 7 fixed to the base of a drawing mechanism, not shown. A channel 8 pierced in the float makes it possible to bring pressurized air to an orifice 9 made in a raised part 10 forming a projection at the top of the float in the center of the die 5.

   On this projection 10 is fixed a diffuser 11 by means of tenons 12 (FIG. 3) penetrating into the notches 13.de of the projection 10 of the float. The diffuser consists (figs. 2, 3,4,5) of a funnel 14, an inverted cone 15, the top of which penetrates into the funnel, and several fin-shaped connection pieces 16 connecting the cone to the funnel. Preferably, the connection is adjustable in height, by rolling the fins 16 in the mortises of the cone 15, the immobilization being ensured for example by locking screws 16a, screwed into the tabs 15a of the cone 15.

   The base of the cone 15 ends in a cylindrical part 17, separated from the internal face of the glass sleeve 6 by an annular space 18. This space 18 can also be formed.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 reduce to a thin-walled annular orifice when the cylindrical part 17 is limited to the lower edge of the cone 15.

   The generatrices of the funnel 14 and those of the cone 15 are such that the air streams which exit tangentially to the funnel 14 at 1'1 are more inclined on the longitudinal axis of the diffuser than the air streams leaving tangentially. to cone 15 at f2; the deviation communicated to the air streams gradually decreases from f1 to f2. Experience shows that deviation angles of about 60 in 1 .. 1 and of about 40 in f2 can be suitable in most cases. However, these angles and, moreover, that the lower and upper levels mm and nn where the deflected air streams strike the sleeve 6, the spacing mn between these levels and the width and length d of the passage 18 may vary depending on the nature of the glass or other material used and the diameter of the tube to be manufactured.

   The operation is as follows: During 1 {stretching of the glass sleeve 6, the pressurized air which comes out of the port 9 of the float 1 enters the diffuser 11 at the base of the funnel 14 and expands. in the space formed between this funnel and the cone 15, the lower air streams following the slope of the internal face of the funnel and the upper veins following the slope of the external face of the cone. All of these veins thus form an air brush which meets the internal face of the glass sleeve 6 on an annular strip extending from level mm to level nn. The air then passes through the annular space 18 included between the base of the cone, or the cylindrical part 17 which is attached to it, and the internal face of the sleeve.

   It is along the annular strip mn and in the annular space 18 that the viscosity of the glass is increased by the contact of its layers situated towards the inside of the sleeve with all the air streams.

   The thickness of the tube is regulated by the drawing speed and by customary cooling means 20 (fig.l) acting on the external face of the glass sleeve.

   The invention also applies to the manufacture of drawn tubes in any vitrified material and to the use of any gaseous fluid other than air.

   It is in no way limited to the embodiment shown and described which has been chosen only by way of example, and includes any device which can be adapted to a container where the molten glass is brought to be. picked and stretched into a ton of hollow muff, and which is made to distribute the gas stream into the interior of that muff in accordance with. method of the invention
