 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  "Process for obtaining pentonic acids and their salts",
The subject of the invention is a process for obtaining pentonic acids by oxidation of pentoses, such as, for example, arabinose, xylose, ribose and lyxose, so as to form the corresponding I-carboxylic acids and their salts with the aid of bacteria of the acetobacter, muoor or aspergillus groups and the subsequent treatment of the compounds obtained, according to known processes, to make them salts of pentonic aoids compatible with the organism or bearable for pharmaceutical purposes.

   The electrochemical oxidation of sugars with the intervention of potassium bromide and calcium carbonate to arrive at the corresponding acids is known. However, the production or work of the products obtained is very difficult owing to the presence of potassium bromide. It is no longer new to transform glucose, for example

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 the bacterial route by means of acetobacter * of aspergillaceae or mucorinae, in glyconic acid, the salts of which could then be obtained free from disturbing impurities. Until now, however, it was not known to treat pentoses by this route. This could be attributed to the fact that the biological properties of pentoses are all different from those of hexoses.

   While hexoses, for example baker's yeast, are quickly and completely fermented (without residue), this is not the case with pentoses.

   However, it has been discovered, according to the invention, that the pentoses are attacked by mold fungi of the aspergillus, mucor and aobacter groups, in particular by a-eetobaoter suboxydans, when aerated intensively, concentrations of 20% being oxidized aveo a yield of 98% to give the corresponding solutions of pentonic acids, which, neutralized by the addition of carbonates of metals or of basic salts of metals, can be used directly as injection liquid in metallotherapy.

   As in the wood sugar industry, pentoses in the form of preliminary extracts of leaf wood or needle wood are obtained in sufficient quantities, the new process of particular industrial importance.

   The use of pentonic acids instead of hexonic acids for pharmaceuticals has particular advantages.

  It has already been tried for a long time to make the hardly soluble salts of polyoxyoarboxylic acids, for example calcium gluoonate, in aqueous solutions supersaturated in a high proportion, but which do not crystallize however, can be used for injections. As stabilizers for these solutions, a large number of compounds have been proposed.

  An ideal solution of the problem, however, was not achieved by this means.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The invention is based on the knowledge that the salts of pentonic acids are much more easily soluble in water and that the alkaline earth salts in the case of a still so high concentration cannot be brought to the oristallization. These properties can therefore be used with advantage for the manufacture of injectable preparations compatible with the organism (bearable). Further, due to the low molecular weight of pentonic acids, the content of metal ions is relatively higher than, for example, in salts of hexonic aids. Onnutilise accordingly only small doses of injection; this results in the possibility of hypodermic administration, towards which we always tend, without pain being felt at the injection site.

   The aqueous saline solutions of pentonic acids obtained by the bacterial route in accordance with the invention can be used for injections immediately after purification with hot activated carbon followed by sterilization.

   Of course, it is also possible to obtain even purer injection solutions. Thus, starting, for example, from fermented sugar solutions, it is possible to isolate the salts of the pentonic acids in the pure state by precipitation using organic solvents, for example methyl alcohol, and if necessary by further precipitation. , and then dissolve these salts at the desired concentration.

    EXAMPLE.

   750 gr. of crystallized xylose are dissolved in 5 l of water with the addition of 0.05% of a mixture of nutrient salts
 EMI3.1
 Composed of 66 S of (NH4) aSO4 '33% of Wa90, 18% of ca (WO3) 2' 12% MgSO4 and 0.2% of FeCl3 and the resulting solution is aerated in a suitable vessel by means of frits. A suspension of acetobacter suboxydans in water is then added and during the duration of the experiment CaCO3 @ is added.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 in accordance with the decline in sugar value.

   After the xylose concentration has dropped below 0.1%, the solution is filtered and heated to the boil with 5% activated carbon (norit) for 30 minutes; it is again filtered and brought, by dilution, to a concentration of 20% of calcium xylonate (yield 98%). After sterilization, this solution can be used directly for intramuscular, hypodermic or intravenous injections in metallotherapy.

   Part of the clear liquid is slowly poured into cold methyl alcohol, cold filtered and, after the residue has dissolved in water, this operation is repeated. The residue, which is now quite olair, is dissolved in water to form a 50% calcium xylonate solution, which, like the solution without further purification, remains perfectly clear even after 'she was left on her own for quite a long time.
