Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 EMI4.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  Self-induction coil adjustable by means of a core of magnetic material capable of being moved in the. coil.

   The invention relates to self-induction coils, the self-induction of which can be adjusted by means of a core of magnetic material which can be moved in the field of the coil and in the direction of the axis of this coil. the latter, these coils being hereinafter referred to as "sliding core coils".

   Coils of this kind can be used, among others, in T.S.F. where, together with a fixed capacitance, they form a tunable oscillating circuit.

   As the multiple tuning capacitors used in a so-called "straight set" apparatus must satisfy the requirement that the capacitors of all the sections present the same shape, it is necessary, if one uses in a receiver of this type of the coils with sliding core, that the variations of the self-inductions of the coils

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 nes are equal, depending on the displacement.

   If sliding core coils are used in receivers operating on the superheterodyne principle, the variation of the self-induction of the sliding core coil of the oscillator circuit must be such that over the entire tuning region the frequency of the circuit oscillator should be such that over the entire tuning region the frequency of the oscillator circuit has a constant difference from the frequency of the previous circuits.

   In the mass production of coils with a sliding core it is in general possible to obtain the desired precision already during the manufacture, that is to say to give the self-induction, depending on the displacement, a prescribed rate determined so that certain compensating means must be provided.

   It has been found in practice that for sliding core coils designed for oscillating circuits which exhibit the same tuning, such as the oscillating circuits of a "straight set" or the high frequency circuits of a superheterodyne receiver, it suffices to be able to set the initial self-induction or the final self-induction one independently of the other.

   In order to obtain the desired frequency difference in the receiver devices of the superheterodyne type with respect to the previous circuits, the sliding core coil can be arranged in such a way that at the beginning and at the end of the tuning region the difference in frequency acquires the exact value. It has been found, however, that in the middle of the region there are unacceptable high deviations which can be 60 to 70 K.C.

   The object of the invention is to provide means of compensating for these deviations after the manufacture of the coils.

   According to the invention, there is for this purpose in the vicinity of one or both ends of the coil a body, of conductive material which, when the core is completely

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 out of the coil is coupled to the coil by a loose coupling. This body may have, for example, the shape of a ring and the distance between this body and the end of the. coil is preferably adjustable.

   The description of the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the features which emerge both from the drawing and from the text, of course forming part of the invention.

   Fig. 1 shows a coil constituted by a cylindrical body 1 on which are wound turns 2. In the vicinity. ge of the right end of the coil is disposed a disc 3 of non-magnetic conductive material, for example copper. The distance between this disc and the end of the coil is adjustable using a screw 4.

   The other end of the coil is surrounded by an annular body 5 also made of non-magnetic conductive material and the distance which separates this body from the actual end of the coil is adjustable, for example, because the ring and the coil bodies are, respectively, tapped and threaded. The sliding magnetic core is designated by 6.

   In the shown position of the core, the self-induction of the coil has the minimum value. If this value is too large, we move the ring 5 to the right, if it is too low, we must move it to the left. In this way it is therefore possible to adjust the minimum value of the self-induction.

   The maximum value of the self-induction of the coil is obtained by sliding the core fully to the right so that it is completely inside the coil. If this value is not completely correct, the subsequent adjustment to the exact value can be carried out in a manner analogous to that which has been described for the adjustment of the minimum self-induction, by moving the disc 3 , after which, in general, a small correction of the position of the ring 5 is still necessary because

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 EMI4.1
 that the position of the 3rd disk probably has some influence on the minimum self-induction.

   Since, however, if the core is completely outside the coil, the disk 3 and ring 5 are each mated to only a small part of the coil, the additional correction required is only small so that it is. easy to adjust both the minimum value and the maximum value of the self-induction.

   If the circumstances allow it, one of the bodies 5 or 3 can be deleted, in which case the correction is only possible at one point. It is obvious that for the adjustment of bodies 3 and 5, other methods of construction can also be used.

   With reference to Figures 2, 3 and 4, it will be explained in detail how a sliding core coil made in accordance with the invention can be adjusted in the case where such a coil is used in the circuit. oscillator of a superheterodyne receiver apparatus in which therefore the frequency of the oscillator circuit presents a constant difference with respect to the frequencies of the preceding circuits of the apparatus.

   In fig. 3, the curve a represents the desired shape of the self-induction L as a function of the length 1 of the part of the core which is inside the coil. If this coil and a given capacitor are combined into an oscillating circuit which is used in the oscillator of a superheterodyne device as an oscillating circuit which determines the frequency, the difference in frequency of this oscillating circuit with respect to the circuits at high frequency, which precedes the frequency changer of the device, is always constant.

   We could try to get closer to the shape of the self-induction represented by the curve a in fig. 3 using the sliding core reel shown in fig. 2, coil which is constituted by a cylindrical body 1 provided with turns 2 and by the sliding core 6 which can be inserted into the coil at the left end. The judicious calculation of the coil ensures that at the beginning and at the end of the tuning region 1a, self-induction has the exact value. In this way we can realize

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 a shape of the self-induction which is similar to that represented by the curve b in FIG. 3. It emerges from this curve that in the middle of the tuning region there is an appreciable deviation from the prescribed rate determined by curve a.

   The difference in frequency between the oscillator circuit and the previous circuit (s) therefore deviates, in the middle of the tuning region, considerably from the desired value. In fig. 4 the so-called "padding" curve, that is to say the difference d as a function of the length 1 of the part of the core which is inside the coil, is represented by curve B.

   If one increases the maximum value of self-induction, for example, by using an iron core which has a higher permeability, a measure by which, however, the minimum value of self-induction is not affected, the. variation of the self-induction is then analogous to that represented by the curve ± in fig. 3, in which case there is a deviation d of the prescribed frequency difference along curve C. At the beginning and in the middle of the region the curves c and C, respectively, in figs. 3 and 4 show the desired look; at the end of the region, however, the self-induction has an excessive value, so that at this point an appreciable deviation d from the desired constant frequency difference is still noticeable.

   When, as shown in fig. 2, a copper ring 3 is provided which reduces the maximum self-induction of the coil down to the value prescribed by curve a, we obtain a padding curve D which, in the entire tuning region, does not show only small deviations d.

   Obviously, other self-induction curves can be obtained, for which the extent to which the inclinations of the curves are different, can be influenced by the degree of coupling between ring 3 and coil 2; it is also possible to influence the shape of the middle part of the curve by using a ring at each end of the coil.

   In addition, it is possible, for example, in receivers of the superheterodyne type, to provide each of the coils with a cut core.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 smoothing previous circuits also with adjustable conductive rings to set the initial self-induction and the final self-induction to the exact values so that the desired equality in rate is obtained.
