Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

    NOUVEAUX ALLIAGES DUES FRITTES ET LEUR PROCEDE DE FABRICATION. les alliages durs frittes objets de l'invention renferment comme constituants principaux un carbure hexagonal d'un métal réfractaire, éventuelle- ment d'autres carbures analogues hexagonaux ou cubiques et un métal ou alliage auxiliaire plus fusible* Ils renferment en outre des additions de composés de chrome et/ou de vanadium, de préférence prépares de façon spéciale, et dont le rôle sera exposé plus loin.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   La succès de ce procède pouvait être attribue à la facile réduc- tion des composés oxygénés du tungstène et du cobalt, et tout paraissait   ea   déoonseiller l'extension à des composés réputés difficiles à réduire, comme ceux du chrome et du vanadium, Or, l'expérience faite par la Société demanderesse a conduit aux constatations surprenantes suivantes : 1 ) la réduction légèrement carburante, effectuée   sur   des mélanges de composés réductibles du titane, du cobalt, avec des proportions peu importantes de chrome et/ou de vanadium, amène ces deux métaux à un état compatible avec leur incorporation dans les alliages frittés; 2 ) chacun de ces métaux ainsi engagés dans   l'alliage   exerce un effet Inhibiteur très marqué sur la cristallisation du carbure de tungstène;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

    NEW FRITTED ALLOYS AND THEIR MANUFACTURING PROCESS. the sintered hard alloys which are the subject of the invention contain as main constituents a hexagonal carbide of a refractory metal, optionally other analogous hexagonal or cubic carbides and a more fusible auxiliary metal or alloy * They also contain additions of compounds of chromium and / or vanadium, preferably prepared in a special way, and the role of which will be explained below.

   The Applicant Company has described in its Belgian patent 428,559, applied for on June 11, 1938, a process for manufacturing hard sintered alloys comprising one or more hexagonal carbides and a more fusible auxiliary metal or alloy. In particular, to combine tungsten carbide and cobalt, we

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 mixture of the reducible compounds of these metals in the proportions required by the alloy, their simultaneous reduction is carried out in a slightly carburizing atmosphere, the carbon is dosed Incorporated in the reduced mixture, the calculated quantity of additional carbon is added to complete the carburetion - tion, then the powder thus obtained is sintered according to the usual techniques.

   The success of this process could be attributed to the easy reduction of the oxygenates of tungsten and cobalt, and everything seemed to prevent the extension to compounds reputed to be difficult to reduce, such as those of chromium and vanadium, Or, l The experience carried out by the Applicant Company has led to the following surprising findings: 1) the slightly fuel-based reduction, carried out on mixtures of reducible compounds of titanium, of cobalt, with small proportions of chromium and / or vanadium, brings about these two metals in a state compatible with their incorporation into the sintered alloys; 2) each of these metals thus engaged in the alloy exerts a very marked inhibitory effect on the crystallization of tungsten carbide;

   3) at equal weight percentages the simultaneous addition of chromium and Taud- exerts this inhibitory effect to a greater degree than the addition of chromium without vanadium or vanadium without chromium.

   Consequently, the alloys having the composition indicated and prepared as will be described possess an exceptionally favorable structure. use as tools, dies, etc. .., even if the content of chromium v and vanadium is limited in the alloy to a very low proportion, It does not appear necessary to exceed about 5% by weight for the total chromium more vanadium; most often, 2 to 3% is sufficient. The favorable effect of these metals is still noticeable for rates of around 0.1% in total.

   The following examples describe two compositions containing respectively!
1) a single hexagonal carbide,
2) a hexagonal carbide and a cubic carbide.

   In both cases, the cobalt serves as a binder. It should be understood that these examples are in no way limiting: the process described remains applicable to alloys containing other refractory carbides and agglomerated by metals or alloys other than cobalt. In these examples the proportions given are by weight,

   EXAMPLES-
Case of a sintered alloy of carbon, titanium, tungsten and -cobalt, modified by additions of carburized chromium and vanadium.

   Basic composition Double titanium and tungsten carbide C4Ti3W ........... 25.1 Tungsten carbide ...................... ... 68.4 Cobalt, ........., ............., ....... 6.5 Experience has shown that this composition it is preferable to incorporate about 0.6% of vanadium and 0.4 of chromate The manufacture of the double carbide C4Ti3W is preferably carried out by mixing oxides or hydroxides of titanium and tungsten in calculated proportions, with a suitable excess of carbon, then to be reduced and carburized in a neutral gas, in a reducing agent, or in a vacuum until the composition C4Ti3W is obtained, these operations being followed by a final-appropriate heat treatment,

     The mixture of cobalt and tungsten, chromium and vanadium carbides is prepared separately as in Example 1. For example, a mixture of 8060 grams of tungstic anhydride, 50 grams of chromium sesquioxide, 110 can be reduced in a carburizing atmosphere. grams of vanadium pentoxide and 890 grams of cobalt black oxide After determination of the carbon, and addition of the desired additional rate, the carburization is completed at a maximum of about 1250, the product is broken up and sieved, which is stored in the shelter air. 74.9 parts thereof were mixed with 25.1 C4T13W double carbide and sintering was completed as usual.

   The process remains applicable according to the same general procedures when an auxiliary alloy of two or more metals with reducible oxides under the conditions indicated is used as the binder, for example cobalt-iron, cobalt-nickel-iron, cobalt-manganese-iron alloys, etc ** It is sufficient to incorporate in the mixture to reduce the calculated quantities of oxides, carbonates or other reducible compounds of these metals.

   On the other hand, the process remains applicable to alloys containing other carbides, for example those of tantalum, niobium, etc. *, The following are prepared separately: 1) each of these carbides, 2) the mixture of the other constituents, such as that tungsten, chromium and / or vanadium carbides, as well as the auxiliary metal or alloy according to the method of Example 1.0 then effect the mixing of all the pulverulent constituents, and finish the sintering in the usual manner.

   When the proportion of tungsten carbide present in the al-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 -binding is very small, especially if the rate of metal or auxiliary alloy is very high, it may be advantageous to incorporate only a fraction of this metal or this alloy with the carbides of tungsten, chromium, @ t / or vanadium,

   by carrying out the corresponding preparation as was recalled above * The additional metal or auxiliary alloy is prepared separately and added with the other carbide constituents prepared separately so as to produce the desired composition which is sintered at the usual way *
The actual state of the chromium and vanadium incorporated as it stands to be described could not be ascertained by any physical or chemical means attempted. It is probable that they are not carbides or oxycarbons. the expressions “chromium carbide” and “vanadium carbon” have therefore been used, it being understood that these are compounds of these metals as prepared by the technique described, and constituting the preferred embodiment.

   According to a variant. the chromium and / or vanadium carbides can be incorporated directly with the other constituents of the alloy, using conventional sintering techniques, in particular the mixing of all the carbides and the metal or auxiliary metals, all in powders fines, compression and sintering in a neutral, reducing atmosphere or in a vacuum,
The effect of the additions of chromium carbide and vanadium carbide was clarified by subjecting various compositions to identical treatments, one of them without chromium nor vanadium, and the others having inoorporated chromium and vanadium or these two metals and in various proportions, For each series,

     the control alloy therefore differed from the new alloys tested only by the additions of reducible compounds of chromium and vanadium in the mixtures treated according to the aforementioned patent and generators of these new alloys * The results differ according to the base alloy contains A) only hexagonal carbides or: 8) both hexagonal and cubic carbides.

     A - In the first oas, comprising the alloys of tungsten oabide with cobalt, chromium and vanadium prevent the enlargement of the hexagonal carbide grains This results in a much finer structure, higher hardness and in use as tools Extremely high wear resistance or as dies. Thus, for a composition of 94% tungsten carbide and 6% cobalt, the following structures were obtained. In the control alloy without chromium or vanadium, the carbide crystals are between approximately 0.5 and 10 microns.

   On a polished cup

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 the proportion of the surface covered by seeds less than or equal to 2 microns reaches at most 40% of the total surface. The addition of 1% chromium according to the technique described lowers the maximum dimension of the carbide to 3-4 microns, the surface covered by grains smaller than 2 microns exceeds 80% of the total surface. If only 0.2 chromium is used, the absence of grains larger than 4 microns is still observed, but grains smaller than 2 microns occupy only 50 to 60% of the surface.

   At an equal weight rate, vanadium gives appreciably the same marna results as ohroma, with a slight tendency for grain refinement * By incorporating both chromium and vanadium between the limits 1 to 1.5% (chromium + vanadium ), the Cr: V ratio being between approximately 0.5 and 1.5, it has been observed that at least 90% of the surface of the alloy consists of interior grains at 1.5 microns *
Regarding the mechanical resistance, the chromium used alone tends to lower it slightly. Vanadium has the opposite effect.

   The alloys obtained, despite their extremely fine grain size, therefore retain sufficient toughness especially in the case of work as cutting tools, and in particular high speed finishing. The preferred use of these alloys is the boring of cast iron or metal cylinders giving abrasive and not very tenacious shavings, alloys of ouivre, aluminum or magnesium for example The finishing passes are perfectly smooth and like wear of tools is extremely weak during work, the requested dimension is observed very rigorously.

   B- In alloys containing a cubic carbide such as titanium carbide or double carbide C4Ti5W and a hexagonal carbide at least like tungsten carbide, the effect is more complex * In fact, cubic carbides dissolve carbide of tungsten in the solid solution state during sintering and the solid solution ranges are generally fairly large grains, for example 4 to 10 microns. The action of chromium and vanadium is then twofold; 1 - it delays the entry of tungsten carbide into solid solution, 2 - it maintains the excess of undissolved tungsten carbide in an extremely fine particle size state.

   Consequently in the sintered alloys with chromium and vanadium and in comparison with alloys devoid of these additives, the cubic phase of the solid solution is in crystalline content not exceeding about 6 microns and the hexagonal carbide phase is in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   much finer crystals, all less than about two microns.

   The wakes obtained therefore have a wear resistance superior to that of alloys devoid of chromium and vanadium while having a toughness comparable to that of similar alloys without chromium or vanadium. It has also been observed that vanadium carbide decreases. considerably the tendency of titanium carbide or C4Ti3W double carbide alloys to present microscopic blisters which are quite numerous but detrimental to the durability of the tools, in particular in work with ches.

   Another reason for supposing that the chromium and vanadium incorporated according to the method described are not totally in the state of C2Cr3 and C3V4 carbides. Each of these carbides was prepared separately, then mixed with the other components and these mixed were sintered according to the second embodiment described above. It was found that the crystallization of hexagonal carbides, although slowed down by the presence of chromium and vanadium carbides, corresponds to an average particle size intermediate between those of the alloys devoid of these carbides and of the alloys prepared according to the preferred method of preparation.

   In the case of titanium carbide alloys, there were still more blisters. The incorporation of chromium and / or vanadium in the form of C2Cr3, C3V4 carbides therefore brings an improvement to the sintered alloys, but significantly lower than that resulting from the preferred mode of manufacture.
