Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   Process for transforming fish or fish waste, such as fish heads, into products
 EMI1.1
 ----------, --------------------------------------- -------- valuable.

  ----------
The invention relates to a process for the processing of fish and fish waste, such as fish heads, into products which are of great value for the food of the population, namely fat. , fish oil, albumin, and artificial fertilizer.

   By applying the known extraction methods to fish waste, or by boiling this waste in water, possibly in autoclaves, attempts have already been made to extract the oil contained therein; but all these processes have turned out to be uneconomical, particularly because in this way only a part of the oil that is there can be removed.

   The process according to the invention now speaks of collecting all the fat and all the oil, and is characterized by
 EMI1.2
 Seed by fa1: that the raw material, for example the heads of fish, is heated in strong hydrochloric acid but is preferably boiled there and this until the moment when the material is clearly divided, into three fractions namely: first, an insoluble part which contains the main mass of phosphates; second, an aqueous liquid in which

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 find in solution mainly disaggregated albuminous matters; and third, the oils and fats which supersede the aqueous liquid in a closed layer.

   The separation of these three parts can easily be done according to a known process.

   The oily fraction is suitable immediately after possible washing for various uses, inter alia for human consumption or for industrial purposes, such as the manufacture of margarine or soap.

   The aqueous solution is freed from its hydrochloric acid, for example by neutralization with sodium hydroxide solution or sodium hydroxide. The cooking salt which forms as a result of this neutralization does not harm the least in the world and its presence is on the contrary very appreciated for many uses of this liquid. The neutralization can optionally be preceded by heating, whereby most of the free hydrochloric acid is removed and can be used immediately again for the treatment of a subsequent load of fresh raw material.

   In this way, a liquid is collected which has a pleasant smell of meat and which lends itself very well to the preparation of soups, aromatic products for soups, pastes for soups, broths, bouillon cubes and ana- logues whose value is due to the albumin content.

   The third fraction, after having been freed of the excess acid, gives a powerful artificial fertilizer which is preferable to the artificial fertilizer consisting of untreated fish waste; the first of these fertilizers is in fact free of fatty substances; however, fatty substances have a harmful influence on the action of plant roots.

     Heating can optionally be continued in hydrochloric acid until the deposit is equal.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   completely or at least largely dissolved; The aqueous liquid then becomes in particular richer in phosphorus. As to how far this operation should be taken, it is necessary to take into account the possibilities of selling the various products, the requirements formulated about each of them, as well as the prices of hydrochloric acid, fuel and end products.

   The invention is particularly important for the treatment of fish tatas, since in some countries the rulers have prescribed that for various categories of fish the heads must be removed and collected before the fish are offered for sale. . Otherwise these heads would be thrown by consumers into the garbage bao when now they can be used as fertilizer or animal fodder. Thanks to the process according to the present invention, however, their value increases considerably and their importance becomes much greater.
