Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

     La constitution de cette combinaison est encore inconnue. On ne peut pas encore trancher la question si l'on se ,trouve en présence d'un acide ou d'une autre com- binaison oxygénée ou bien encore d'un ester. Alors que, par addition d'eau, comme on l'expliquera plus loin, la com- binaison se décompose en aldéhyde acétique, en aldéhyde

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  Process for preparing an organic combination.

   When, under normal saponification conditions, vinyl acetate is treated with a caustic alkali lye, alkali acetate and ascetic aldehyde or aldehyde-based resin are obtained.

  It has now been found that, by the action of a les- sive on vinyl acetate, a new combination is obtained, when the vinyl ester is treated with an alkali hydroxide, at low temperature, preferably. below '15. Under these conditions it occurs well

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 alkali acetate, but no resin and, on the other hand, a new organic combination is unexpectedly obtained. For this treatment, it is advisable to regulate in a determined manner the other conditions of the reaction. The adjustment relates to the weight ratio between alkali and vinyl acetate. it is advantageous to use, for one gram-molecule of vinyl acetate, from 0.6 to 0.8 gram-molecule of alkali hydroxide. 'When more or less is used, increasing or decreasing performance is detrimental.

   On the other hand, when these proportions of ester and alkali are employed, it is advantageously possible to regulate the quantity of gram-molecules of water present between sevenfold and tenfold of the number of gram-molecules. of the vinyl acetate used. When larger amounts of water are used, the yields decrease under the above conditions. When smaller amounts of water are used there are simply mechanical drawbacks due to the repairing alkali acetate. Vigorous agitation promotes the formation reaction. It goes without saying that by subjecting other esters to the same treatment, corresponding combinations can be obtained.

   The new combination obtained from vinyl acetate has the crude formula C8H14O4.

  Its specific gravity is 1.08; the combination is colorless and somewhat viscous. It boils between 92 and 1000 under an absolute pressure of 22 to 14 reams of mercury. It decomposes when distilled under normal pressure.

     The constitution of this combination is still unknown. The question cannot yet be settled whether it is in the presence of an acid or another oxygenated combination or even an ester. While on addition of water, as will be explained later, the combination decomposes to acetic aldehyde, aldehyde

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 crotonic and ascetic acid, the presence of any acid cannot yet be detected by titration immediately after the addition of water. The research, if it is an ester in this combination, is obscured by the fact that all the reactions applicable to this effect detect the acetic acid component of the new combination. Bromine water and an aqueous solution of permanganate are not instantly discolored by this combination.

   The anhydrous combination, however, immediately combines with two elemental bromine atoms. Determination of molecular weight by lowering the melting point in mothballs indicated 174.

   The technical importance of this combination lies, among other things, in that it is suitable as a raw material for reactions and syntheses. This combination can in particular, depending on the chemical reaction to which it is subjected under the most diverse conditions, give, in the nascent state, acetic acid, acetic aldehyde and aldehyde. crotonic. The action of water is already sufficient to cause, after a long period of time at room temperature, or more quickly when hot, the formation of a gram-molecule of each of these three bodies, the combination, which itself is insoluble in water, then passing to the state of solution. - The presence of water is by no means essential for this purpose.

   This same formation of acetic aldehyde, crotonic aldehyde and acetic acid can be seen and used even in the complete absence of water. When, for example, at room temperature, normal butanol is added to this C8H14O4 combination in the presence of small amounts of concentrated sulfuric acid, considerable amounts of acetate can be obtained side by side. of butyl, butylacetalacetic aldehyde and dibutylacetalcrotonic aldehyde. Liais we can also, @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 if necessary, carry out reactions without any liquid agent.

   This is how yellow mercury oxide reacts with the combination C8H14O4 to force crystallized white mercury acetate. With the aid of oxidizing agents, the structural elements of the suit can be fully or partially oxidized and used in this state. Thus, for example, by oxidation with the aid of suitable quantities of potassium permanganate, it is possible to cause the constituent acetic aldehyde to pass by oxidation to the state of acetic acid and to leave much of the crotonic aldehyde intact.

    Obviously, because of its ability to let aldehydes detach, the combination manifests a great ability to react with ammonia and organic bases of all kinds. Likewise, through aldehydes, the way is opened for the formation of resins and above all resins based on combinations of acetic aldehyde and crotonic aldehyde. Bisulfite combinations can also be prepared.

   The new combination obtained from vinyl acetate is not only important as a raw material for reactions and syntheses. It can also be used directly in industry. It constitutes, for example, a good solvent for a large number of organic materials, natural resins and synthetic resins. It is miscible with a number of other liquids and can therefore be used in the lacquer art. Finally, it constitutes a good plasticizer, for example for combinations of polyvinyl and polyacryl and for other polymers.

 1200 g. of water, without ceasing vigorous stirring and, while maintaining, by external cooling, the temperature between 0 and + 100. = until the addition of the solution is complete, stirring is continued for a further half hour. Two phases are formed from which the upper one is separated.

  The vinyl acetate still present is first removed by distillation at normal pressure, heating to 85. Then the combination is distilled between 92 and 100 under an absolute pressure of 22 to 14 mm. of mercury.

  A yield of 493 g is obtained. of pure product.

   As a by-product, alkaline acetate is obtained which has to be extracted from the aqueous phase.
