 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Process for the production of fully drawn sheets of aluminum alloys which can be refined.

   Main Patent No. 442,416 describes a process for the manufacture of fully drawn sheets of aluminum alloys capable of being refined, according to which the sheets rolled to the final dimension, not yet refined, are subjected to preheating. such that the texture comes directly to recrystallization. This process is especially important in the case of high strength aluminum alloys, capable of being refined, which belong or can be assimilated to the category Al-Cu-Mg (DIN 1713). According to the main patent, the preheating takes place at temperatures of approximately 320-360 C. The duration of the reheating carried out in a salt bath is approximately μ to 1 hour.

   The choice of temperature and reheating duration de- @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 mainly depends on the manganese content, and the advantages of the process are particularly striking in the case of alloys with a low manganese content, that is to say less than about 0.4% manganese .

   To complete the process, it has been proposed to carry out the preliminary reheating of the Al-Cu-Mg alloys capable of being refined and having a manganese content of 0 to 0.4% at temperatures increasing with the content of. manganese and between
290 and 320 C, the heating time being increased to about 5 hours at least. These reduced reheating temperatures have the great advantage of not requiring strict observation of the reheating time, a longer reheating time not making the success of the operation uncertain.

   All previous tests carried out with Al-Cu-Mg alloys related to sheets which, before being reheated, underwent a cold deformation of between 10 and 50%. These cold deformation rates correspond to the final cold operations to which high strength Al-Cu-Mg alloys were usually subjected, before applying a heat treatment to them.

   New tests on cold deformation rates with more than 50% reduction in height have shown that not only can the preheating temperature be lowered, but also the reheating time as a rule reduced. fage, and that it is advantageous to also apply the reheating treatment to alloys with a manganese content exceeding 0.4%.

   Thus, for example, it has been found that in the case of an alloy composed of about 4.2% copper, 0.8% magnesium, 0.3% manganese and, for the remainder, of commercial aluminum, it is advisable to carry out the preheating at 290 C for 1 hour, when the last rolling operation has led to a reduction in height of about 75%. In the case of an alloy of similar composition, but with 0.6% manganese, and a rolling rate of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 75% cold, preheating for one hour at 300 C is sufficient. Test pieces of such sheets, subjected to stretching and heating five times, retained a practically unaltered fine grain.

   For heavily rolled alloy sheets of similar composition, but very low in manganese (less than about 0.1%) or free of manganese, suitable reheating temperatures are in the range of 250 to 270 ° C; however, longer heating times must be accepted. Thus, for example, sheets of an alloy without manganese, cold-rolled at 75%, gave a good result as to the grain size, after a preliminary reheating of at least 3 days at 250 C. It was however found that sheets made of these alloys poor in manganese or free of manganese and also highly laminated, can hardly be made insensitive to the growth of the grain, after multiple cold deformations and reheating.

   The invention therefore provides for sheets rolled to the final dimension and not yet refined, made of aluminum alloys capable of being refined, belonging to or assimilable to the Al-Cu-Mg category (DIN 1713) and containing
5.5 - 3.5% or less copper,
2.0 - 0.2% magnesium,
1.5 - 0.2% silicon
1.5 - 0.1% or, optionally 0.0% of manganese, to subject these sheets, which have undergone a final cold rolling of more than 50%, to preheating at temperatures increasing with the manganese content and between 250 and 350 C, preferably between 250 and 320 C, so that the texture comes directly to recrystallization.

   Reheat temperatures can vary between certain limits. They can, without compromising the obtaining of good fully drawn sheets, vary more strongly and be higher, in particular when the manganese content of the alloy is higher. When the rate of the final cold rolling does not de- @ -

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 only slightly 50%, it is advisable to choose reheating temperatures a little higher than in cases where the rate of final rolling significantly exceeds 50%.

   The reheating times are approximately one hour. As a general rule, they can be reduced all the more as the rolling rate is higher. Likewise, it is generally possible to be satisfied with shorter reheating times if the reheating temperature is raised somewhat; conversely, the reheating time should be increased if the temperature is lowered slightly.

   In all cases, however, the preheating must be carried out, according to the main patent, until at least partial recrystallization takes place.

   It should also be taken into account that the possible variations in temperature and reheating times are less permissible as the manganese content is lower. In the case of alloys which are very low in manganese or free from manganese, it is almost inevitable to carry out the reheating at a lower temperature and with a longer duration. It is therefore advisable, for these alloys, not to choose too high rolling rates, when it is a question of obtaining good sheets drawn fully.
