Alternating or three-phase current generator without regulator, at constant voltage.

The main cause of the large voltage drop in AC and three-phase generators is the stray field and the armature reaction. If we want the voltage to remain constant, it is necessary to have a completely determined excitation current for each load current. A separate voltage regulator can only be dispensed with if it is possible to achieve by the magnetic action of the load current a corresponding strengthening of the excitation current.

According to this principle two solutions are known. Separate exciter machines have been proposed having, in addition to the direct current winding, also a three-phase current winding. The three-phase current winding is crossed by the load current of the main generator and generates an additional flow of lines of force which reinforces the excitation voltage according to the @

 load and the power factor.

CfJJJ on the other hand, the realization of these ioeas has come up against different. uneducated technical matters. When a very heavily saturated exciter machine with a straight-line idling characteristic is used, the self-excitation is extremely uncertain due to the dragging intersection of the straight line of resistance with the idling characteristic.

When using an exciting machine with a saturated

These drawbacks have been attempted to be overcome by subjecting the exciter machine to independent excitation by means of a battery or other constant current source. In the case of low iron saturation, the exci-

But this arrangement has the disadvantage of requiring enoore a third current source of great voltage constancy.

In addition, arrangements are known in which the independent or separate excitation, or additional incitation under load is

who. carries, in a manner known per se, in addition to its three-phase current winding, a direct current winding arranged, preferably, in other grooves than the three-phase current winding and dimensioned only for the current low power excitation,

the brushes of this excitation winding not however being arranged in the neutral zone but being offset by a certain angle in the direction of rotation, as described below in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawing.

The DC auxiliary winding is designated by GW and its idle field by #o. Its brushes B-B are not in the neutral zone, but are offset from the latter in the direction of rotation @, by the angle / 3, from which it follows that only part of the excitation voltage maximum possible is taken on them.

When the generator is loaded with rms current, a resulting magnetic chanp #r is established which is also offset in the direction of rotation n by the angular displacement angle [alpha] of the pole wheel. This, in turn, results in the excitation voltage then rising, so that the voltage at the slip rings u, v, w remains on average constant or approximately constant.
