<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
qui servent à supporter et à fixer les rails. On décrira ci-après un mode de fabrication de ces blochets au moyeh de béton précontraint, selon le procédé qui fait l'objet de l'invention; des armatures a, a1 constituées chacune de préfé- rence, par un faisceau de fils d'acier à haute limite élas- tique (par exemple fils d'acier dur tréfilé de 3 mm de diamè- tre, ayant une limite élastique d'environ 120 kg/mm2 et une limite de rupture de 150-160 kg/mm2);
Les blochets comportent des parties dans lesquelles peuvent se visser les tirefonds;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

for: Railway sleepers and other parts in prestressed reinforced concrete; method and apparatus for manufacturing such parts.
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing prestressed reinforced concrete parts and more particularly (but not exclusively) short parts such as railway sleepers or even small poles, for which this method proves to be particularly advantageous.
According to this method, the concrete constituting the body of the parts is cast in two parts, separated by a slot and joined by the reinforcements; after setting and hardening, traction is exerted on the two parts, which produces the tensioning of the reinforcements and the widening of the slot by a value equal to the elastic elongation of the steels; a wedge is then placed in the slot, preferably in matt mortar, which maintains the reinforcements in tension when the action of the traction devices is stopped.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The reinforcements can be placed outside the concrete and surround the two parts of it, in the manner of a hoop for example, or still be embedded in the concrete and, in this case, the reinforcements anchored at their ends in the concrete are fitted, between the anchor points and before the concrete is poured, with a non-stick coating such as bitume which will allow them to slide with respect to the concrete during tensioning.
The subject of the invention is also an apparatus intended for implementing this method and making it possible to grasp the two concrete parts which constitute the part and to separate them from one another in order to tension the reinforcements. It preferably comprises two groups of jaws which are clamped against the concrete on either side of the slot so as to join the two parts of the part together without the possibility of sliding, which can be obtained. by molding said parts into the shape of wedges at the locations where the jaws are applied or by providing them with ridges or notches, corresponding to similar ridges or notches provided on the jaws.
The apparatus further comprises a frame in two parts in which are placed the groups of jaws gripping the piece of concrete to be treated and which can be moved away from one of the lair using jacks. The relative movements of these two parts, when they move apart, are communicated to the jaws, preferably by means of wedges clamped between these parts and the jaws.
The invention also extends to pre-stressed concrete parts manufactured by the process, parts which may include the combination of several elements each obtained according to the process. Thus in the case of railway sleepers to which the invention is more specifically aimed, it will be advantageous to manufacture in advance and separately, by the process, the parts of these sleepers on which the rails are. supported and pulled. In fact, in addition to the fact that these parts receiving direct support from the rails must be particularly resistant,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
they must be made with precision so that the holes intended to receive the lag screws are at the desired dimensions.
For these parts, which will be referred to hereinafter as "blocks", recourse will be had to the embodiment of the process in which the reinforcements producing the prestresses are formed by a hooping external to the concrete; each block will thus be manufactured in two blocks separated by a slot, surrounded by a steel hoop and each encasing a piece of wood intended to receive the lag screw. The slot may include recesses in which wedges will be introduced to produce, by their spacing, the tensioning of the hoop, after which mortar will be put down in the slot and the wedges will be removed after hardening of this mortar.
The blocks thus formed will be placed at the desired locations in the mold of the cross member and the reinforcements of the cross member will also be placed in this mold, preferably constituted by layers of steel wires. At the ends of the mold, these wires will be left bare so that they can be anchored in the concrete, while between the anchoring points they will be coated with bitumen or some other non-stick substance. The concrete will then be poured into the mold so as to coat the reinforcements and the side walls of the blocks.
Other features will emerge from the description which follows with reference to the appended drawing given by way of example, it being understood that both the features described and those shown in the drawing form part of the invention. .

In the embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2 which concerns the manufacture of a railway sleeper, we have in a mold 1: two parts b, b1 which we will call blocks and
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
which are used to support and fix the rails. A method of manufacturing these blocks using prestressed concrete will be described below, according to the method which is the subject of the invention; reinforcements a, a1 each preferably constituted by a bundle of steel wires with high elastic limit (for example hard drawn steel wires 3 mm in diameter, having an elastic limit of about 120 kg / mm2 and a breaking limit of 150-160 kg / mm2);
The blocks have parts into which the lag screws can be screwed;
these parts can be formed, the blocks being concrete, by cones c, c of hard wood, bakelized wood, asbestos concrete or any other material in which a lag screw can be screwed or a nut fixed, embedded in concrete, provided with a fret enveloping these cones.
Each layer of reinforcements a, a1 is formed of a wire, provided at one end with an anerage hook d in an Archimedean spiral or involute of a circle, wound several times, according to the outline shown in plan in fig. . 2 and finally provided, at its other free end, with an anchoring hook e similar to d. The contour shown for each reinforcing layer was chosen to make it possible to lighten the crosspiece in the center, by reducing its thickness, while avoiding the vacuum thrusts of the stretched wires on the concrete. This contour has two crossing points f, f; at these points, in each layer, one of the crossing bundles passes between the wires of the other bundle, divided into two groups as shown in fig. 4.
Before concreting, the wires are covered with bitumen (or another substance capable of eliminating the adhesion of the wires to the concrete) between points g, g 'on the one hand, h, h' on the other hand. In the curved parts of the wires,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
they can also be surrounded by gutters 3, (fig. 2.
3 and 4). Finally, a partition 2 is placed in the central part of the mold, which separates the mold into two halves. This done, the concrete is poured into the two halves of the mold, this concrete thus coming to coat the reinforcements and the side walls of the blocks.
After setting and hardening of the concrete, it is removed from the mold. By then exerting traction on the two halves of the crosspiece, for example by means of the apparatus which will be described below, the reinforcing wires are then tensioned between the points and g 'on the one hand, h and h 'on the other hand, the elongation of these wires with respect to the concrete being made possible by the coating of bitumen or other suitable substance.
During this tensioning operation, the width of the slot existing between the two halves of the cross member increases, which makes it possible to easily remove the partition 2 and when the desired tension is obtained (in the cross member shown in fig. 1 and 2, a pretension of 100 kg / mm2 has been used), the slot is filled by hammering with a rich mortar used very dry. When this mortar has reached sufficient strength, the crosspiece can be removed from the tensioning device; the crosspiece is complete.
By examining fig. 1 it will be noted that the cross member has a curvature in the vertical plane. In this way, the bearing face of the sleeper on the ballast is substantially perpendicular to the planes of symmetry of the rails and it is also possible to give each of the layers of reinforcement a substantially flat contour (except however towards the ends. - tees, especially for the lower layer, the outline of which is slightly warped).
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
It goes without saying that sleepers could be produced having a flat underside.
We will now describe the realization of the blocks by means of prestressed concrete in accordance with the method which is the subject of the invention.
As can be seen on the left part of fig.l and better still in fig. 7, each of these blocks consists of two concrete half-blocks 4,4, surrounded by a belt with a wire of high strength steel 5, one end of which is anchored at 5a to the upper part and the other at 5b to the lower part of the same half-block by the means shown or any other. These two half-blocks are cast in the same formwork (formwork 6, fig.6) against the internal wall of which the wire forming the belt will have been placed beforehand. You can also wind the wire on the two half-blocks after their molding; the wire is anchored on parts embedded in the concrete. In each of them is embedded a steel wire hoop whose interior is filled with a conical formwork.
These two half-blocks are separated by a slot 7, obtained during molding by means of a suitable partition provided in the mold.
At each end, this slit widens to form recesses 8,8. These recesses make it possible, once the concrete of the half-blocks has set and hardened and the block has been removed from the mold, to introduce wedges 9 which will serve to separate the half-blocks from one another, thus putting the - -------------- wire 5 of the belt. This operation will be performed under a press. For this purpose, the block will be placed on the plate 10 of the press by means of a support 11 provided with a recess 12, the height of which (limited if necessary by a wedge 12a) will correspond exactly to the stroke of the corners 9 , required for tensioning. The wedges will be driven in by the movable head of the press until they touch the bottom of the recess 12.
Beforehand, steel furring 13 will have been placed between the corners and the concrete in order to
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
to obtain in the displacement of the wedges a sliding steel on steel. When the wedges are fully seated, producing the desired tension in the wires 5, the central part 7 of the slot will be filled, by hammering with a hammer, with rich mortar, after which the wedges can be removed and hollowed out. elements in which they were located will be filled with concrete during the manufacture of the sleeper.
To facilitate the setting in tenure of the oeinturage 5 of the block, it may be advantageous to have between the turns of this belt on the internal wall of the mold 6, furs 14 (fig. 6) which will prevent the turns 5 from being embedded in concrete. We could also hollow out the sides of the block so as to leave a certain gap on these sides between the wires 5 and the concrete.
An apparatus suitable for tensioning the armatures of the cross member will now be described with regard to figs. 12 to 14.
This device is made up of two pairs of pins 15,15 and 16,16 which are tightened against the cross member on either side of the median slot by means of bolts and nuts 17,17 and 18, 18, any sliding of the jaws relative to the cross member being prevented, on the one hand, thanks to the angles formed between the walls of the cross member and, on the other hand, by grooves 19 formed during the molding on the concrete of the cross and corresponding to similar streaks of the jaws.
The whole of the crosspiece and the morcahes tight against it is introduced into two cages 20, 21 which can be moved relative to each other by means of jacks 22 whose pot is carried by one of the cages 20 and the piston acts on the other cage 21. These cages each comprise a pair of inclined bearing surfaces 23,23
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
and 24, 24 which, during the separation of the cages under the action of the jacks, clamp wedges 25 between them and the jaws, thus forcing these jaws to follow the movement of the cages.
The pair of jaws' 15 is thus separated from the pair of jaws 16, which produces the separation of the two halves of the cross member, the elastic elongation of its reinforcing threads and the widening of the slot existing between the two halves of the cross member. To avoid the drawbacks of irregular pressure on the concrete of the cross member under the pressure of the jaws, it is advisable to interpose between the corners and the surfaces 23, 23 and 24, 24 lead plates 35; on the other hand, a sliding of the wedges 25 on the jaws to be prevented, it is possible to have the keys 36 between the wedges and the jaws.
Note that the cross member is held in place in the axis of the cages by the clamping force of the wedges 25 under the action of the jacks 22. Note also that the jars of the jacks 22 are mounted in gutters 26 of the cage 20, so that the axis of these jacks can be moved slightly in height in order to place it at the level of the axis of the reinforcements to be tensioned. This adjustment is made when the cross member is seen to bend during tensioning. It is made possible by the fact that the cylinder pot fits into each gutter between the heads of four screws 27.
To move a jack, upwards for example, it suffices to unscrew the two upper screws then to screw the nuts 28 on the rods 29 which are integral with the jars of each jack, the said nuts 28 being supported on integral stops. of the cage. In their movement, the cages slide on a suitable support, for example on U-shaped irons resting on the ground and suitably greased.

When the desired tension is obtained, a rich and dry cement mortar is introduced by hammering into the median slot of the cross member and then, before releasing the pressure in the jacks, this matted seal is surrounded by a device of hooping allowing it to harden sufficiently without being destroyed by the pressure it will withstand. This device shown in perspective in FIG. 15, consists of two uprights 31 which have a thickness equal to that of the seal and come to bear on two of the opposite sides thereof.
These uprights are joined together by bolts 32 and nuts 33. On the other two sides of the joint are supported two wedges 34 which are tight against the joint by the uprights when the nuts 33 are screwed.
Once the crossing is completed, we introduce into the tapered voids c, c blocks, very dry hardwood elements, bakelized wood, mortar rich in asbestos, etc ...; In the pots you can screw lag screws or fix bolts. This method of attaching the rails is also known. We can bring the number of recesses to 3 or 4 instead of 2; although this is not recommendable. Using lag screws or bolts engaged in these mobile elements, it is possible to fix the rail, either directly or by interposing wooden saddles, steel on wood or rubber, steel laid in a plaster mortar bath or with any other binder such as felt or asphalt cardboard, etc ...
It is recommended to use for the concrete of the sleeper a concrete which is very well vibrated and with a granulometry ensuring it the greatest possible compactness and the greatest possible compressive strength. It seems preferable not to exceed for the large elements of this concrete a diameter of 15 mm.
It goes without saying that the embodiments which have just been described have been given only as

examples and that they could be modified without departing from the scope of the invention.
CLAIMS
1. A process for manufacturing prestressed reinforced concrete parts and more especially short parts such as railway sleepers or even small poles, characterized in that the concrete constituting the body of the parts is cast in two parts separated by a slot and joined by the reinforcements, a traction being exerted on the two parts after setting and hardening, which produces the tensioning of the reinforcements and the widening of the slot in which a wedge is then placed, preferably in mated mortar, which keeps the reinforcements in tension.
