Reinforcing bar for reinforced concrete
The present invention relates to reinforcing bars for reinforced concrete.
In order to obtain better adhesion between reinforcement and concrete than with ordinary round bars, square bars twisted into a helix were used. These known square bars all have serious drawbacks, because of their sharp angles.
In the first place, their resistance is less than that of round bars, because an angle in a bar is a starting point in the event of tension.
Then, the angle of a bent square bar attacks the concrete like the edge of a knife in the event of intense and repeated efforts, which can lead to splitting.
Finally, the concrete poured around the bar molding itself onto it, it follows that around a square bar there are angles @

alive in concrete. However, we know that, in concrete, a sharp angle is a weak point, the probable start of a crack.
All these drawbacks are avoided by the present invention, which essentially consists in giving the twisted bar a square section with rounded angles.
The rounded angle does not weaken the resistance of the bar, or that of the surrounding concrete, the adhesion of a square bar twisted with rounded angles remains bi higher than that of a round bar , and its modulus of elasticity is much higher than that of a composite bar made, for example, of two round bars twisted together.
This bar can also be usefully used in compression.
The appended drawing shows by way of example one embodiment of the invention, the single figure being a cross section of the square bar twisted at rounded angles s.
The radius r of the rounding will for example be equal to about a quarter of the side a of the square; it can vary between 0.1 and 0.4 of a. This rounding can be obtained very easily by rolling the bar, which is an advantage.
In order to be able to increase the admissible tension in the reinforcement, the bar can be twisted while keeping the ends at an invariable distance: in doing so, it is stretched and its elastic limit is thus substantially raised.
