Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Derailleur for bicycles and, in general, for any device with chain transmission
The present invention relates to a derailleur or device applicable to bicycles and similar vehicles and, in general, to all chain transmission devices in which the change of speed is obtained by the use of pinions of different diameters, said device making it possible to pass the chain of a pinion over one of the other pinions making up the drive system.

   This device, compared to those generally used, is remarkable for its great simplicity and has the peculiarity of being mounted entirely inside the frame of the machine, which protects it from any impact and any damage. risk of deformation.

   Said device is represented in substance and only by way of example by the appended drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is the side view of the entire device
Fig. 2 is the front view, from the outside
Fig. 3 relates to a variant.

   The device forming the subject of the invention essentially comprises a pivot a which is mounted inside the frame b. parallel to the axis of the driving wheel, by means of a fastening bracket c which can be connected to the frame b by means of a clamp 1 or directly by means of a clamp clamped on the hub

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 wheel, but which can also be attached to it by welding. On this pivot a is mounted, so as to be able to rotate on said pivot, the arm e at the free end of which is articulated, in k, the lever f which carries, at its end, the axis g on which is mounted idle the guide pin h. The drive chain i protected and retained by the caliper j passes under this pinion.

   Beyond its point of articulation the arm a extends and its upper end is subjected to the action of a Bowden cable which, crossing the pivot along its axis, rises along the frame to a joystick, not shown, by means of which the cyclist controls the device.

   On the pivot a is mounted a spring m formed of several turns wound on said pivot and of a branch which, extending downwards, comes, at its end, to connect to the lever f. This single spring m therefore acts by torsion on said lever f to always tighten the chain and, by bending, it always tends to pull this same lever outwards in the lateral direction to place the chain on one of the sprockets. extremes of the shifting system.

   Consequently, the operation of the device is easily understood. In the standby position, the lever t is urged by the spring m in the direction indicated by arrow 5 to occupy its extreme lateral position on one side, which places the chain on one of the end sprockets of l axis of the speed change system.

   By acting on this lever f, against the action of said spring m by means of the control by the cable l, it can be brought to its middle position and then to its extreme position, on the other side.

  The lever f driving the chain 1, in the links of which the teeth of the caster a are engaged, said chain is thus urged to mount on the sets of pinions providing different speeds.

   A variant can be produced, in accordance with the indications in FIG. 3 of the accompanying drawing by reversing the position of the arm e so as to place the articulation of the lever f above the pivot and, consequently, above the point of action of the control cable. The lever f, a lever of the 1st kind in the first arrangement

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 tion, then becomes a lever of the 3rd kind. Of course, in this case, the above-described movements are reversed but their effects remain, in substance, the same.

   This device has been described as applying more particularly to a bicycle, but it can be designed to apply to any other vehicle of the same type and, in general, with the particular adaptations possibly required by each application. ;, special, to any device with chain transmission. It can be set for two or more speeds.

   It is moreover of course understood that the present description as well as the indications of the drawing, have no other aim than to specify the characteristics of the invention and that the latter, in its realization, is susceptible, of all variants which do not exclude said characteristics.

   - Summary -
The invention relates to a derailleur or device applicable to bicycles and similar vehicles and, in general, to all chain transmission devices in which the change of speed is obtained by the use of pinions :. of different diameters on which the chain can be directed at will, this device being especially characterized in that:
1 A single lever articulated in the direction of the plane of the wheel and in the direction perpendicular to this plane makes it possible to ensure the tension of the chain and the lateral guidance of the latter in order to direct it on the pair of pinions corresponding to the chosen speed.

   2 A single spring which cooperates with the operating cable when controlling the chain guide lever exerts, at the same time, its action on this same lever, to ensure the appropriate tension of the chain.

   3 The cable control acts by pulling the aforesaid lever, against the action of the aforesaid spring.
