Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

  A process for the production of acrylic acid nitrile.

   French patent N 873,774 describes a process for the production of acrylic acid nitrile by the addition of hydrocyanic acid to acetylene in aqueous medium in the presence of catalysts capable of converting acetylene into non-benzene polymer products, c 'that is to say vinyl compounds. During this process, a large number of side products are formed such as acetaldehyde, mono- and divinyl acetylenes and high boiling vinyl derivatives, these side products exit the reaction vessel together with the nitrile. of acid. = acrylic formed as well as with excess acetylene, unreacted hydrocyanic acid, water which distils. Monovinyl acetylene represents the main amount of side products.

   However, the Applicant has found that the formation of monovinyl acetylene can be reduced by carrying out the reaction in the presence of monovinyl acetylene. In practice, one operates by eliminating by appropriate measures, the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 nitrile of acrylic acid of the gas mixture obtained during the reaction, leaving however monovinyl acetylene in the latter and returning this gas remaining in the gas circulation while adding a quantity of raw materials corresponding to the consumption. During this procedure, the reaction can be directed so that the amount of monovinyl acetylene does not exceed a certain limit value in the gas circulation. This limit value depends on the most diverse factors and it can be for example about 15-20%.

   The new formation of monovinyl acetylene can be reduced to amounts which disappear from the gas circulation by side reactions, for example by the formation of cyanobutadiene, or with the waste gases. By suppressing the new formation of monovinyl acetylene, an increase in the yield of acrylic acid nitrile, calculated on acetylene, is obtained.

  Another advantage of the process consists in that it is no longer necessary to apply the measures necessary to remove the monovinyl acetylene from the acetylene which has not reacted.

   The present invention is further illustrated by the following examples which, however, have no limiting nature: Example 1. A gas mixture consisting of 81% acetylene, 15.5% monovinyl acetylene and 3.5% acid is carried out. hydrocyanic (average values of several hours) with a speed of 10,000 1 per hour per 70 1 of a catalyst liquid containing 650 g per liter. of cuprous chloride, 350 g. of ammonium chloride, 560 g. of water and 20 cm3 of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The reaction gas is released from the acrylic acid nitrile by washing with water.

   The remaining gas containing practically beside the acetylene which has not reacted the total amount of monovinyl acetylene, is brought to the above-mentioned composition by the addition of acetylene.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 lene and decide hydrocyanic, and it is thus kept always in circulation. 740 g of acrylic acid nitrile are obtained per hour. The yield is over 80%, calculated on acetylene, and over 90%, calculated on hydrocyanic acid.

  Example 2. The process is carried out with 180 l of an aqueous solution serving as a catalyst and containing 455 g per liter. of auprous chloride, 245 g. of ammonium chloride and 24 em3 of concentrated hydrochloric acid, at a temperature of 80 C, 4800-5000 1. of acetylene per hour. 575 g are added to acetylene. anhydrous hydrocyanic acid per hour. The nitrile of acrylic acid is extracted from the gases leaving the reaction vessel by washing with water, and the waste gases consisting of unreacted acetylene and side products (especially acetylene monoviny) are returned to . lique) in the gas circulation.

   The consumed quantity of acetylene is replaced by the addition of fresh acetylene, namely 875 g. per hour. 81% of the reacted acetylene is converted to acrylic acid nitrile. If the monovinyl acetylene was not taken back, but separated by cooling to low temperature, only 65-70% of the reacted acetylene would turn into acrylic acid nitrile.
