Description

A method of coiling a wire.

To coil a wire, it is known practice to wind it on a rotary mandrel. The pitch is then regulated by a comb-shaped member which also serves to remove the wire while a tightening handwheel applies the turns to the mandrel and ensures sufficient friction on the mandrel.

This method has a drawback: when it leaves the mandrel, the coiled wire is twisted around its axis, so that it is practically impossible to wind it without twisting.

In addition, it is difficult to directly use the coiled wire thus obtained in a cable as in the coil reinforcements of cables, as mentioned in Belgian patent no. 449.513 or for the manufacture of air-insulated cables comprising a coiled wire of thermoplastic insulating material.

According to the invention these drawbacks are obviated by coiling the wire using a stationary mandrel, the coil of wire rotating around the mandrel.

This process requires a device, composed of a stationary mandrel and a member capable of adjusting the pitch of the turns and removing the wire, a member which is integral with the spool of wire and rotates around it. of the chuck. The removal member may consist, for example, of an undeformable coiled wire or of a comb.

To ensure sufficient friction between the wire and the mandrel, the latter may have grooves, or else a tightening handwheel can be used. To facilitate wire removal, the mandrel will be slightly conical, at least at its free end.

In some cases, for example for coiling thermoplastic wire or even metallic wire, it may be desirable to heat the wire before winding it on the mandrel.

To this end, an electric furnace is mounted between the wire coil and the mandrel, the movement of which is integral with that of the coil.

After its removal from the mandrel, the coiled wire according to the invention can be wound free of twist or be used directly in the cables. In the latter case, the wire can be wound on a hollow mandrel, crossed by the conductors, insulated or not, called to constitute the cable. The device required for coiling the wire can then be coupled to the device used for the manufacture of the cable.

Although in the above it is only a question of wire, by wire is meant not only round wire but also somewhat flattened or profiled wire, a narrow ribbon or a hollow wire, forms which, in certain constructions of cables air-insulated, have the advantage that a greater part of the iso-

 lant can consist of air.

The description of the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be carried out, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing, forming, of course, part of said invention.

The wire 1 to be wrapped is on the spool 2 which turns freely on the spindle 3. This spindle is fixed on the plate 4, which at the same time carries the electric oven 5. The plate 4 and the grooved pulley 6 are integral with the hollow shaft 7, the end of which comprises a helical member 8, for example composed of a coiled metal wire. The hollow shaft 7 is movable around the fixed mandrel 9. Of this mandrel, which may be hollow to allow the passage of the conductors called upon to constitute a cable, the part which is located inside the member 8 is slightly conical. and has grooves directed essentially in the longitudinal direction. These grooves serve to ensure sufficient friction between the wire and the mandrel, while the conical shape facilitates the removal of the wire.

The pitch of the member 8 which acts as a removal mechanism also regulates the pitch of the winding.

When driving the grooved pulley 6, the coiled wire 10 is obtained which can be wound up, without more, free of twisting or for example be surrounded by a wrapping using a machine coupled to the device described.
