<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Method for manufacturing metal cast bars and installation for carrying out the method".
The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of bars or rods cast in metal in passage shells, with direct cooling of the cast iron by a liquid refrigerant, as well as to an installation for carrying out the process. .
In the casting in bars or'boudins, it is already known to subject the metal poured into the shell, to a relatively mild indirect cooling through the walls of the shell and then to cool the rod at the outlet of the shell directly. by a stream of air or a liquid refrigerant. The purpose of this direct cooling was to cause a very strong cooling in this place.
It is also known to carry out this direct cooling by air or by water, and in the latter case, for example, a water tank was provided under the profiling shell proper.
EMI1.1
bottom of which the coil was conducted in a liquid-tight manner 411
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and in which, at approximately the point where the strand entered the water, piping / supply and water intake had been arranged. The water was introduced into the reservoir under low pressure.
This process did not make it possible to obtain an energetic cooling towards which, as we know, one tends, in particular during the casting of light metals and their alloys, with a view to improving the crystalline texture, because the withdrawal of the metal from the casting mold creates a gap between the strand and the wall of the cock, which prevents heat abduction. In order to avoid the formation of this gap, it is recommended, according to the invention, to bring the coolant from below under a pressure such that it penetrates into the space between the wall or the shell and the cast iron. up to where the sausage, which solidifies, detaches from the shell wall.
This gives, on the one hand, the possibility of applying direct cooling to the coil earlier, but on the other hand, we also retain the advantage of a long shell, compared to its cross section, that is that is to say the certainty of remaining in the mold during changes in the level of the cast iron, which can occasionally occur under various manufacturing circumstances, in other words to prevent the very dangerous rupture of the molten metal in the coolant bath.
The subject of the invention is also an installation or device for carrying out the method, the principle of which consists in that the part of the shell which gives the profile has been adapted to the height to which the coolant must penetrate, an abduction pipe for the coolant.
This installation makes it possible to discharge relatively large quantities of refrigerant, in certain circumstances at reduced pressures in the interval between le.boudin and the wall of the shell, and to achieve effective cooling; in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
at the same time,, this device ensures the exact level of the refrigerant in the interval ,,
The invention will be explained in detail with the aid of the accompanying schematic drawing.
, In this drawing, a designates the cooling jacket or envelope which surrounds the profiling shell proper b, @ is longer / than the latter, and it is provided below, at o, with sealing means by which the coil solidified f can exit in a watertight manner from the jacket a. These means may consist of a stuffing box or stuffing box, rubber cylinders (d, fig. 3) or the like. The closure means do not belong to the subject of the invention.
The molten metal is poured into the shell through the pouring tube k. As, between the wall b this the shell and the jacket a, circulates a constantly renewed liquid refrigerant, the metal solidifies after its introduction into the 'shell and is then discharged from the shell of the shell at the bottom. Immediately thereafter upon solidification, the metal contracts, so that it detaches from the shell wall b at approximately level i, and a gap forms between the strand f and the shell wall b.
The refrigerant fluid is then, according to the invention, introduced into the refrigerating jacket a and from there from below into the profiling space b of the shell by the pipe e under a pressure such that the interval 1 is completely filled. of refrigerant fluid, that is to say that the refrigerant fluid rises up to level i inside the shell b. For this purpose, the refrigerant fluid abduction line h-can be placed a little higher than level i, in order to obtain the necessary liquid pressure.
In the drawing, which shows the arrangement of the shell in elevation and in profile as well as the closing cylinders xxxx seen in plan, there is shown the case where the abduction pipe
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
h is provided in the wall of the profiling shell b, and the supply line e in the wall of the cooling jacket a. At level i, a cooling ring g is provided in this case with the abduction pipe h in the wall b of the shell. The refrigerant then flows from the space r through the gap 1 upwards to the abduction ring g and leaves the whole shell through the ab- duction pipe h .
