AGENCEMENT DE MOTEUR, NOTAMMENT POUR VEHICULES AUTOMOBILES A MOTEUR
ARRIERE.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

ENGINE ARRANGEMENTS, ESPECIALLY FOR MOTOR VEHICLES
BACK.
For motor vehicles with a rear engine, an engine has already been proposed in which, in order to reduce as far as possible the space required for the engine, the cylinders are arranged transversely to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, while the connecting rods of the cylinders act on the longitudinally extending crankshaft, by means of oscillating levers with two arms, :: which are each time mounted under two cylinders and are connected to the crankshaft by a third arm and a connecting rod .
Apart from the main purpose, namely to communicate the displacement of the pistons of the cylinders, arranged transversely to the length of the vehicle, to the crankshaft extending longitudinally, one would also obtain, by the use of the oscillating levers, a significant reduction in the friction of the pistons. in the cylinders owing to the fact that by the use of oscillating levers, the deviations or oscillations of the connecting rods in the cylinders are notably, more reduced than during the direct attack of the crankshaft.
The accompanying drawing shows schematically in figs. 1 and 2 .
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
How the angle of deflection or obliquity of the connecting rods decreases with increasing length of the oscillating levers.
In fig.l, the cylinder is designated by 1, the swinging lever arm by 2 and the connecting rod by '3; in fig.2 these members are designated respectively by the, 2 ', 3' and it can be seen that the arm 2 'is twice as long as the arm 2. The obliquity or deviation of the connecting rod 3' is at first glance much smaller than the obliqueness or deviation of the connecting rod 3.
In order to be able to take advantage of this advantage in the aforementioned proposal, where the connecting rods of each pair of neighboring cylinders work on a common oscillating lever, it was essential to separate the cylinders from one another and consequently to significantly increase the length of the cylinder block.
According to the invention, the length of the oscillating levers is increased without increasing the length of the cylinder block, due to the action on a common oscillating lever of the oscillating levers of each time two non-contiguous cylinders, that is to say first and third cylinders and second and fourth cylinders.
The drawing shows schematically in fig.3 an exemplary embodiment of this arrangement.
Below the cylinders the. 2a, 3a and 4a are provided oscillating levers 5 whose arms 6 actuate the crankshaft 8 by means of b @ ellettes 7, the connecting rods 9 of the cylinders 1a and 3a attacking an oscillating lever 5, while on the other oscillating lever 5 operate the connecting rods 9 of the cylinders 2a and 4a. It is clearly visible in the drawing that the length of the levers 5 is more than doubling the length that these levers would present if they were actuated by the connecting rods of each two contiguous cylinders, that is to say for example the cylinders la and 2a or 3a and 4a.
'and arrangement has the additional advantage that it is possible to have the two engine groups each consisting of two cylinders, connecting rods, oscillating lever and crankshaft, in two different planes, which allows on the one hand to save space for the movements of the levers, and on the other hand, in

taking into account the more than sufficient length of the oscillating levers, to achieve a tighter arrangement of the cylinders on the axis, thus contributing to the significant reduction in the length of the engine.
