 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

La fig. 8 montre, en élévation, un ressort à deux fils, encastré dans un châssis de coussin, celui-ci en coupe selon x-y de la fig. 9;
La fig. 9 représente le même ressort et le châssis en plan ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  PATENT OF INVENTION Limited Liability Company Establishments COMPIN Improvements to springs for cushions, training courses for vehicles, bed bases and similar applications. Priorities: Deposit France November 28, 1941 and for all purposes: "We June 8, 1943
The present invention relates to improvements made to springs for cushions, vehicle seats, box springs and similar applications.

  An improved spring according to the invention is constituted by a metal spring wire of fairly strong section, bypassed in the form of a coil and embedded at its two ends so as to form a series of contiguous interlaced loops, having a certain freedom of relative displacement which allows them to widen, in the transverse direction, under the effect of a load and thus constitute an elastic support for the latter.

   According to the embodiments, the loops are formed by a single wire, traversing either a single or several round trips to form a spring element; a plurality of these can also be used in parallel to meet the full width of the seat or the like. In another embodiment the coils, instead of being constituted by a single wire, consist of two independent wires, working in cooperation, the half-loops formed by each coil being, by mounting, interlaced with a wire. to the other along a mean fictitious line which defines the longitudinal axis of the spring.

   The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, various embodiments of an improved spring according to 1. ' invention:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

Fig. 1 shows the spring in plan,
Fig. 2 in elevation, mounted in an automobile cushion, in section along line 1-1 of Figure 2.

    Figs. 3 and 4 show the special mode of connection, with clearance, necessary for the union of the spring according to the invention to an ordinary spring.

   Figs. 5 to 7 relate to another embodiment of the spring.

   Figures 8 to 10 represent a third embodiment:
Fig. 8 shows, in elevation, a spring with two wires, embedded in a cushion frame, the latter in section along x-y of FIG. 9;
Fig. 9 shows the same spring and the frame in plan;
Fig. 10 is a schematic view showing, in plan, the shape of the spring under the effect of a load.

   The spring shown in fig. 1 is formed by a steel wire, or any other suitable elastic material, folded for the first time in half, so as to form two main branches 1 and 2. These two branches are then shaped into a serpentine so as to form substantially half - circumferences la, lb, 1c and 2a, 2b, 2c. The spring ends with two rectilinear transverse parts 3 and 4 (the latter actually constituted in two parts 4a and 4b corresponding to the two ends of the initial wire). These rectilinear parts are generally embedded in the hinges 5 and 6, integral with the fixed parts 7 and 8 of the seat.

   The length of the spring is slightly greater than the distance of the fixed parts 7 and 8, so that the spring is, in the rest state, slightly convex upwards, as shown in FIG. 2.

     Under the effect of the load, the spring tends to bend downwards and therefore increase in length. The increase in length is however thwarted by the fixed supports 7 and 8, consequently forcing the spring coils to spread out in the transverse direction, coming to occupy the positions shown in phantom in fig. 1, and this bending mode provides remarkable elasticity and flexibility.

    In a seat or the like, of course, several springs of this kind are placed next to each other in the widthwise direction, so as to cover the entire width of the seat. The whole is covered by a wad 9, of the known type.

   The spring of the invention, when applied to a box spring, is generally supported by a number of ordinary, cylindrical or conical springs. This arrangement is shown in figs. 3 and 4, the ìL. 4 being a section on line 4-4 of FIG. 3.

   Due to the lateral displacement of the branches 1 and 2 of the spring according to the invention, under the effect of the load, the connection to the ordinary spring 10 can be effected by means of connecting sleeves 11 and 12 having an opening elongated in the direction horizontal, so as to allow the horizontal movements of the strands 1 and 2 of the spring according to the invention

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The spring according to fig. 5 is made according to the same principle as 'above, but' with the difference that the wire. '\ forming the spring makes four journeys, that is to say two back and forth trips, instead of a single outward and return trip.

   To better understand this arrangement, there is shown, in the lower part of FIG. 5, in phantom lines, the path taken by the axis of the wire constituting the spring. We can see which total path is made up of two trips 11 and 12, and two returns 13 and 14. The beginning and the end of the spring are found respectively at 15 and 16. The spring shown at the top of the fig. 5, .is the same as the lower part but shown, -for.. to understand, in a smaller diameter.

   Fig. 6 is, on a reduced scale, an elevational view of the above spring, showing the arrangement of the two strands, one curved upward and the other downward.

    In fig. 7 has shown another embodiment of the 'spring according to the invention. The spring of this figure comprises several spans, for example four, each ..braided, being with two strands, according to the principle of fig, 5, and the variant consisting in making the wire travel first of all a single round trip. , successively in each bay, except the last, where it carries out two of them to then return back, by traversing in each tr, avée the second outward and return. This mode of travel will be easily understood by following the arrows in FIG. 7, since. the beginning 17 of the course, and until its end 18.

   In the embodiment according to Figures 8 to 10, the spring consists of two son, for example steel, each arched in a serpentine, so as to present a series of regular half-loops, respectively 19a, 19b, .. 19th and 20a, 20b, .. 20th. the half-loops, in each series, being connected by other intermediate half-loops, respectively 21a, 2Ib, ... 2Id and 22a, 22b, .. 22d.

   During assembly, these half-loops are interwoven from one thread to the other (Fig. 9). The free ends, 23-24 of the first wire, and 25-26 of the second, are / engaged in hinges 27-28, fixed on the transverse posts 29-30 of the frame.

   As shown in Figure 8, the spring has a curve, obtained in a mechanical manner, and which gives it nerve.

   When the spring supports a load, it tends to bend downwards, and consequently to increase in length, but this increase being prohibited by the fixed supports 29-30, the half-loops tend. to be closed, in that the middle parts 21a-22a, 2Ib-22b, .. 2Id-22d, approach the xy axis and come into contact (fig. 10), which limits the stroke and the spring deformation.

   Of course, the latter can be mounted, either alone, or in parallel, or supported on other springs arranged vertically and of conical or bi-conical shape, by analogy with the arrangements described above.

   Such a two-wire spring design lends itself to mass production because the two sides of the spring are independent. We can then manufacture them mechanically in Ion-. indefinite lengths, and then cut them to the desired length for a spring; thus achieves appreciable savings in labor with easy and regular manufacture.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   On the other hand, the loops formed by two half-loops facing each other have a more elongated shape transversely than in the case of a single thread, where the loops have a quasi-circular shape.

   According to a fundamental characteristic of this embodiment, the deformation stroke of the spring is automatically limited by the meeting of the axial parts, forming "nodes", of the spring, and whose coming into contact does not allow transverse deformation. to exceed this limit. While retaining the same elastic qualities, the spring cannot therefore - thanks to its constitution in two elements - undergo excessive sagging.

   CLAIMS 1 - An improved spring for cushions, vehicle seats, bed bases and similar applications, characterized in that it consists of a metal wire, of fairly strong section, bypassed in a serpentine and embedded at both ends so as to form loops widening laterally under the effect of the load and thus providing the desired elasticity.

  2 - Spring according to 1 characterized in that it is embedded, at each of its ends canopy a hinge, by forcing a bulge between these two hinges and in that it is constituted by a continuous wire, bypassed in a serpentine, going from one hinge to the other and returning to the first hinge, the loops formed on one of the paths being engaged in the loops formed on the other path.

  3 - Next spring 1 and 2 characterized in that it is constituted by several paths, and especially two paths, of the wire between the two hinges.

  4 - A set of springs for a seat, consisting of several parallel rows of individual springs along 1 and 2 or along 1 and 3, characterized in that the path of the wire is such that it first successively forms a single strand. that is to say, one back and forth of each spring, and that it then returns back, symmetrically to its outward journey, constituting the second strand of each individual spring.

  5 - Spring according to 1 characterized in that the wire consists of two independent sections, working in cooperation, each shaped so as to produce a series of half-loops which, by mounting, are interlaced from one wire to the other to constitute a series of contiguous loops, preferably relatively elongated, the axial parts forming "nodes" to limit transverse deformation.
