  DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY
SUBMITTED IN SUPPORT OF A REQUEST
OF INVENTION PATENT the Company known as: MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG A.G.

Double V engine German patent application in favor of September 15, 1943.

The invention relates to an internal combustion engine and its object is to obtain as high a power as possible in the smallest space. This is especially important for vehicles, eg airplanes, boats, motor vehicles, etc., where the space available for the motor is often very limited and very low weight relative to power is required.

An increase in engine power by a corresponding increase in the cylinders quickly reaches its ceiling because the ratio between the size of large-cylinder engines and the increase in power thus obtained is unfavorable because the number of revolutions to which can reach the engine is limited in the case of large pistons and large moving masses. We have come, because of this, in particular in the construction of aircraft engines, to combine many small cylinders in an engine and to greatly increase the number of revolutions. Engines with several groups of fan, star and H-shaped cylinders have been built, that is to say, engines in which several groups of fan-shaped, star-shaped or H-shaped cylinders are arranged consecutively. 'from each other.

These construction methods have led to a significant increase in engine power. However, they are hardly applicable to engines mounted on a frame which is difficult to access from below, such as for example in boats, railcars and also fixed installations. The installation of these engines on airplanes makes it possible, without taking special measures, to have access to all the cylinders not only from above and from the sides, but also from below, and to carry out the necessary maintenance work. , in particular at the. repair of cylinders and pistons. On board boats and railcars this is not the case, however, because in general repairs to the pistons can only be done by the naut or at most obliquely from the side.

From this point of view, star and H-shaped motors are initially distinguished in that the repairs to the pistons of the cylinders directed downwards can only be carried out after having removed the motor from its frame. The fan-shaped engine comprising, for example: nple four cylinders in the same plane, although there is in fact in its ca.s enough space available to carry out repairs to the pistons of the side cylinders, does not present any. Noins the disadvantage that the attack of a single crankpin by the four piston rods creates too great a load on the bearings.
