 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

On,obtient 40 parties d'acide 11-amino-cydécy- lique. Rendement 53 %.

   Exemple 3.-

On obtient 49 parties d'acide 11-amino-undécylique (rendement 65 %),

Acres the works of Kharash and his associates (Journ.

Bitter. Chemioal Soc. - T. 55 pages 2468, 2531 - 1933 - T. 56 page 244 - 1934) the direction of the binding of the hydracids to the olefins is reversed when the operation is carried out in the presence of peroxides.

In the case of 10-11 undecylenic acid, the binding of hydrobromic acid when operating in the presence of peroxides takes place mainly in the direction of the formation of 11-bromo-undecylic acid.

However, a certain proportion of the 10-bromo isomer is formed. 11-Bromo acid can be separated from 10-bromo acid by crystallization in the appropriate solvents. However, as stated below, the process according to the present invention makes it possible to start either from 11-bromo-undecylic acid or from the mixture of 10 and 11 bromo acids such as is formed during the reaction of hydrobromic acid. on undecylenic acid.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

10-11-undecylenic acid is an industrial product produced by pyrogenation of castor oil or of methyl or ethyl esters of ricinoleic acid.

It is known that amino acids can be prepared by the action of ammonia on halogenated acids according to the Hoffmann method of preparation of amines. Amino acids were prepared in this way from the corresponding halogenated acids and in good yields.

But when the halogen is farther from the carboxyl group, the yield of amino acid becomes lower and it is more so the larger the distance of the amine group from the carboxyl is.

Flaschenträger and Halle for example (Z. physiol. CH.

Volume 159, page 286 -1926-) obtain 10-amino-undecylic acid by the action of an alcoholic solution of ammonia on 10-bromo-undecylic acid with a yield of the order of 4% D 'according to these authors, this low yield is due to the separation of the two functional groups. According to Lutz (Zentr. Blatt 1910 1. page 907) the main reaction products during the action of ammonia on the halogenated J, J etc. acids are the corresponding oxy-acids.

The applicants have found that unexpectedly and in contradiction with generally accepted rules, 11-amino-undecylic acid can be prepared by the action of ammonia in aqueous, alcoholic or hydroalcoholic solution on 11- acid. bromo-undecylique, with a yield which can reach and exceed 80% of theory. The reaction can be carried out at relatively low temperatures and at atmospheric pressure or at a slightly higher pressure, depending on the vapor pressure of the ammonia.

The 10-bromo-undecylic acid does not convert into the corresponding amino acid under the conditions for carrying out the process according to the invention. This property of 10-bromo-undecylic acid makes it possible to treat a mixture of 10 and 11 bromo acids such as results from the action of hydrobromic acid on 10-11-undecylenic acid in the presence of catalysts, without the reaction product consisting of a mixture of 10 and 11 amino acids, the separation of which would be very difficult. 10-Bromo-undecylic acid gives easily separable oily reaction products from 11-amino-undecylic acid.

The rate of the amination reaction is a function of temperature. . 30 the reaction to be complete takes about 100 hours, at 80 it is completed in 5-6 hours. But the increase in temperature does not decrease the yield. Thus the efficiency which is 75 to 80% at 30 is 40% when operating at 80. Depending on the convenience of manufacture, the most suitable temperature can be chosen.

The properties of the new product which is 11-amino-undecylic acid are as follows: crystallized in water, it is in the form of white lamellae or needles agglomerated in bundles, especially if they are obtained by cold crystallization of a weakly concentrated hot solution. When crystallizing from concentrated solutions, the crystals are very small, but very easily filterable. Its solubility in boiling water is 6%. The solubility in cold water is approximately 0.2%. It is insoluble in alcohol and in most organic solvents. It is quite soluble in hot acetic acid and phenols.

It melts at 176, The melting point of its paratoluene sulfonamide is 91
The examples below illustrate the execution of the process according to the invention.

   Example 1.-
100 parts of 11-bromo-undecylic acid
300 parts of a 25% aqueous ammonia solution are stirred for 2 hours at room temperature. The fairly runny dough that forms is maintained at a temperature of 30.

The progress of the reaction is followed by the determination of the ammonium bromide formed. After 100 to 120 hours the reaction is complete. The reaction mixture is diluted in 2,000 parts of water. We boil. The ammonia that is given off is collected in the water and the ammonia solution used for the next operation. During boiling, the initially clear solution becomes cloudy and a small quantity of oil separates on the surface.

The hot aqueous layer is deoiled and filtered. On cooling, 11-amino-undecylic acid crystallizes. Drained, washed on the filter with 300.parties of water. To have a purer product, it is reoristallized in 1,500 parts of boiling water. After filtration, cooling, draining and washing, 53 parts of 11-amino-undecylic acid are obtained. Concentration of the mother liquors yields a further 4 parts of acid. The yield thus obtained is 75%
Example 2.-
100 parts of 11-bromo-undecylic acid
300 parts of a 25% aqueous ammonia solution are heated to 60 in a closed container. A clear solution forms. Precipitation of the amino-undecylic acid formed begins after about a quarter of an hour.

The reaction is complete after about 10 hours.

The product is recovered as described in Example 1. 40 parts of 11-amino-cydecylic acid are obtained. Yield 53%.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   Example 3.-
100 parts of crude 11-bromo-undecylic acid containing:
20% 10-bromo-undecylic acid
300 parts of a 25% aqueous ammonia solution are treated as described in Example 1. The product is recovered in the same way. 45 parts of 11-amino-undecylic acid are obtained, which corresponds to a yield of 74% relative to the 11-bromo acid used.

   Example 4. -
100 parts of 11-bromo-undecylic acid - 200 parts of methyl alcohol
200 parts of a 25% aqueous ammonia solution are left at room temperature. After a few hours, a precipitate formed consisting of a mixture of ammonium bromide and 11-amino-undecylic acid. The formation of the theoretical amount of NE4Br is complete in about 4 days.

At the end of this time, the alcohol and excess ammonia are separated by distillation. Diluted hot, left to crystallize, filtered off, washed on the filter with 200 parts of water. The amino acid thus obtained is recrystallized from 1,000 parts of water. 46 parts are obtained.
 EMI4.1
 11-amino-undecylic acid (yield 61 μ).

   Example 5.-
100 parts of 11-bromo-undecylic acid
300 parts of a 25% solution of ammonia in ethyl alcohol are held for 60 hours at 30; at the end of this time, the theoretical amount of NH4Br was formed.

The alcohol and excess ammonia are removed by heating in a water bath. The residue is taken up with 1,500 parts of boiling water. The procedure is continued as in Example 4. 49 parts of 11-amino-undecylic acid are obtained (yield 65%),
