PROCEDE D'ENRICHISSEMENT DES MINERAIS DE FER M. PAUL Roer, Antoine, Eugène, Charles demeurant, à Rouen (S.I.)
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

IRON ORE ENRICHMENT PROCESS M. PAUL Roer, Antoine, Eugène, Charles residing in Rouen (S.I.)
Processes are known by which the iron ore is calcined and then, after more or less thorough grinding, sorted. consequently enriched by electromagnetic route.
In some of these processes, the ore is calcined in an oxidizing atmosphere, in others, the ore is calcined, at more or less high temperature, in a reducing atmosphere. Sometimes the ore is suddenly cooled in water.
In other cases, the ore is calcined in an oxidizing atmosphere, then cooled by reducing gases, which recover the calories from the glowing ore and then serve for its heating.
Experience has shown that these processes can have drawbacks, either that not all ores can be magnetized, or that the magnetism index is insufficient to carry out purification in a field.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
at low intensity, either because the stability of the magnetic oxide obtained is imperfect, or again, during industrial manufacture, significant losses make the process unusable.
The object of the method of the invention is to obviate these various drawbacks, and to make it possible to treat all magnetizable iron ores under the best thermal conditions, and with the least expenditure of energy.
In addition, it makes it possible to obtain a magnetic complex composed of Be304 and Fe 0.
According to the process, object of the invention, the ore, either as it comes from the mine, or previously enriched by a known mechanical or hydro-mechanical process is, in any case, granulated to a size less than 10 at 12 millimeters, by any suitable apparatus giving, as far as possible, only a little fine dust.
The ore thus prepared is subjected to all of the treatments and operations specified below, the invention consisting of the combination of the means employed.
It is roasted or calcined in a rotary kiln with methodical heating, the ore traveling in the opposite direction to the heating gas current. The kiln is lined internally with refractory brickwork, preferably fitted with an appropriate stirring device.
In the first part of the oven, i.e. the entrance
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
cold ore until it reaches the optimum magnetization temperature, the ore is heated in an oxidizing atmosphere in which the 0 ratio is close to 0.1 or preferably in a superoxidizing atmosphere with a 0 ratio going up to 0 . 3 and 0.6, while CO2 in the hot zone, it is in a reducing atmosphere, the Reducers ratio being, possibly, sufficient
CO2 to partially reduce the iron to the state of Fe 0.
Under these conditions, in the oxidizing zone, the ore is dehydrated, desulfurized, decarbonated, the iron is peroxidized, and the calories of the fuel are fully utilized. In the hot reducing zone, the iron peroxide is transformed into salt oxide. magnetic. In any case, the transition from the oxidizing atmosphere to the reducing atmosphere must be as abrupt as possible.
This has, among others, the following advantages: lowering (50 to 1000 C) in certain cases (non-calcareous ores for example) and for a given ore, of the sensitization or magnetization temperature, that is to say; of the maximum temperature to which the ore is heated at the end of the oxidizing phase, just before the start of the reducing phase; reduction, if necessary, of part of the iron to the state of iron protoxide if the ratio Reducers is high enough, as
CO mentioned above. Heating the ore in half
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
atmospheres is achieved by known means.
The magnetization temperature varies according to the nature of the ore and the state of the iron (oxide, carbonate, etc.); it is between 650 and 1,000 C.
Reducing heating is carried out with a combustible mixture (gas, liquid or solid) - air, with variable air dosage according to the Fe 0 ratio that is desired.
Fe3O4 obtain the secondary air necessary for the complete combustion of the gases, according to the required ratio 0 in the
CO2 burnt gas, being injected at a single point to have the sudden passage from the superoxidizing atmosphere to the reducing atmosphere.
On leaving the rotary kiln, the glowing ore falls away from the air in an extinguisher device, passing through a suitable sealed device, which prevents any communication between the atmosphere of the rotary kiln and the extinguisher; the object of this method and this device is to prevent any entry of vapors or dust originating from the astonishment of the incandescent ore into the extinguishing liquid, vapors and dust having, without this device, the serious drawback of disturbing the atmosphere oven, and drastically reduce the temperature of the flames or heating gases.
The magnetized and incandescent ore falling into the extinguishing liquid is so astonishing that, with many ores, the grinding is done under conditions of remarkable ease, and with an insignificant expenditure of force.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The process according to the invention also has the following advantages:. a) - to produce a kind of concentration of the magnetic oxide which allows as total elimination as possible of the gangue, b) - to give the magnetite its maximum magnetism index allowing electromagnetic purification without losses as it will be set out below.
In the case where the reduction is partially pushed to the Fe o stage, the Fe304 being with a high magnetism index and associated with the Fe O, there is no loss in the electromagnetic separation as described above. after.
Under water, the raw, extinct magnetite is ground to a varying degree of fineness depending on the original heterogeneity of the ore. Then, by means of a wet electromagnetic device, the magnetite or the magnetic complex Fe3O4 and Fe 0 is separated from its gangue and is collected in the form of sludge which then suffices to dry by an appropriate known device in order to obtain the powdered magnetic salt iron oxide, to a high degree of purity.
This oxide specific to the various known uses of magnetite also constitutes a remarkable steel raw material, which, in many cases, can
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
even serve for direct processing of steel in an electric furnace.
